Canva / Canva File Fomatting Question
« on: Yesterday at 18:46 »
Does anyone know which file format allows users to edit the colors of illustrations? I've noticed that for my own personal use of Canva, when I upload an SVG with a limited color palette this is possible, but as far as I know contributor uploads are limited to eps and jpg.
Does it depend on the file format or the number of colors present in the illustration?

Cool article and mini collection. So many beautiful and unique styles. Shame they are all flattened to just afro hairstyle. Thanks for sharing!

From where I come from, this exact style of hair is shortly called exactly "afro", a woman goes to a hair dresser and says "make me an afro" and this hair style is the result and I've seen lots of ads on facebook stating "cheap afro hair style, afro hair style specialist and so on".
I'm pretty sure in a lot of other Slavic countries it's known as "afro" and probably many more in Europe and Asia, so I think it's rather relevant keyword for this hair style.

Fascinating. What do Black women there ask for when they don't want braids, but they don't want it straight, just styled in its natural state?

Only thing is that if you're a regular person, the products being sold are rather expensive. I mean if I really wanna T shirt with a design on it, for me, I would rather spend a few bucks compared to about 20-30 or more bucks in Canadian.
For a Canadian, those products are a bit pricey.  This is concerning for me especially if buyers might see this as expensive. Oh well.  Still I have to try just like anyone else.

Yeah, they all seem expensive. The only ones that sell for me are the cheaper/smaller products. Still a good margin, I think, if you can get to a nice volume in sales. I'll probably focus on those small products, stickers, small art prints, face masks, etc. I don't know how many mugs and water bottles a person can own and use!

Afro-textured maybe, but afro hair doesn't make sense to me for that photo. Those are braids in the US. I'd search for braids if I were looking for that photo. I'd search for afro if I were looking for a style like Viola Davis currently wears. Are you trying to describe a texture or a style? There's a difference (Afro/afro), which you can probably research if it's important enough to you.

Not touching the rest of this discourse with a ten foot pole and a hazmat suit on.

Whoa, that biography.  :o

"In Crumb's own words, it was a lengthy drug trip on LSD that "left him fuzzy for two months" and led to him adopting the surrealistic, psychedelic style for which he has become known"

That certainly explains some things, lol.

Interesting. Going over the numbers, my monthly sales have all been steadily higher than the March 2020 sales, so I suppose I haven't seen any 2X payments the whole time?re their stipulations:

at least double your March 2020 earnings, or your actual earnings for the month; whichever is higher.

Neat image. Is that ye olde corporate style?  I seem to recall a lot of oldie cartoons had this similar style. They have the disproportionate bodies we're seeing again today,  but they still have a lot of detail work. I wonder if there are any more simpler examples from back then.

Yep, what zsooofija said. This link also still works for me (Canva gave it to us back during some hiccup with accounts as an alternative):

Update. Last upload January 14, now out of review. So about one month review time now. Looks like they might be recovering from the pandemic backlog. So hopefully we can create seasonal art this year without needing a six-month lead time.

Howdy, medveh!

The changes in June 2020 at SS made me think that I should shift my focus from microstock towards other areas like POD sites. I love creating seamless patterns so now I am focusing on that too.

I figured the same, especially as POD sites and Etsy note the uptick in people buying for their homes because they are stuck at home most of the time. It only makes sense to invest a little more time into my portfolio there.

I like to plan out illustration sets or mini collections around a theme, and I definitely want to have some seamless patterns. They look great on pretty much every product offering and have been fun to make since I learned how to. My goal this year is to create a xmas holiday collection around one of my better selling pieces on society6 and see how it does.

Now that you mention it, I can see some Nick Park influences in the 3d design.

I don't know of any places offering night shirts, but these sites are adding more items all the time. Maybe they'll get around to that soon.

I've FINALLY discovered what the name of this recently ubiquitous illustration trend is! "Corporate art". Originally started at Facebook, unsurprisingly. I get the appeal. It's not for me.

Here's a brief critique:

Yes, the uploading and formatting is extra. I haven't done much with my shop since I started, but here it is:

https://society6.com/pursuitofnatural

I was featured last year and the uptick really showed how dismal traffic and discoverability normally is over there. I'd like to follow more illustrators over there too, if you feel like sharing your link. I had this brainwave for collaborations on there, where each artist creates a piece for a collection and each sells a particular product for that set exclusively. So a bag, a hoodie, and a phone case all designed to go together but sold separately through each artist's shop. It would depend on having similar styles, I think, but would be good for building community, discoverability, and cross promotion.

I'm actually quoting what Shutterstock support told me. They suggested using a VPN, so I've found one to try now and I can get in. In case anyone else is having the same issue. I'm on a PC, using TouchVPN.

Anyone here who is a current contributor having this issue? Apparently it's affected a lot of contributors and they have no idea when the issue will be resolved.

Canva / Re: Upload progress @ canva?
« on: February 03, 2021, 18:37 »
About 2 months, currently. I upload via WeTransfer, and I get a notification when they download the files. They appear as In Review on my account. Then I regularly check Canva to see when they are approved. You won't get a notification if they are rejected or approved. It will just be marked as such in your portfolio.

(I make almost the same amount on canva with 70 vectors as I make on Adobe with 700).

This is true. I stopped uploading to Adobe. I really think their user base is more photo heavy, not vectors. I mean, the company is the go-to for photo manipulation so it only makes sense.

No problem!

One thing they mentioned was creating one color or fewer color versions. Here's an old illustration I'm fiddling with. They also complained about disorganized layers, lol! I try to group things logically, for my own sanity, but I stopped naming layers.

I should diversify my style then, because I illustrate mainly for web and digital use. Here's a great old reddit thread where a bunch of graphic designers and printers left suggestions for vector illustrators. Lots of good pointers.

Thanks for sharing.  :)

Mostly Instagram is an album for self promotion and discovering other artists and their styles. Followers do not translate to opportunities. The more successfully working illustrators in general have "low" follower counts on there.

24
Interesting. Do you share examples of your work there? I imagine it would be more tedious to keep up with it in the blog format (speaking as someone who tried a few times.) Or is it mainly for writing about your work?

Microstock illustrators sure are an elusive bunch. Where is everyone? Maybe I'll check blogs. Do you mind sharing your blog link, ktg?

Canva / Re: Canva Tax Witholding Period
« on: January 15, 2021, 23:40 »
Australia does have a tax year of July to June. I have the reverse problem, that all the US companies tax reports are not in keeping with when I have to report.

Ha, true.

Yes, the statement Canva sent worked out to a 5% withholding.
