BME at SS and IS (both due to my first EL on each of these). DT and StockXpert lagging behind, with one week to go unlikely to hit a BME. FT totally disappointing, currently at around one third of my BME there...

So far all my OD sales were for $1.88. Today I had one for $0.81. Has anyone seen this price before?

Yes, have seen both of these prices before. Different size, that's the explanation.

General - Top Sites / Re: The most unsatisfying site?
« on: March 23, 2009, 07:49 »
I'm surprised no one has mentioned that there's a Big 6 site missing from the list. Maybe it was felt that absolutely no one would select StockXpert is their most unsatisfying site?  ;D

I strongly agree with the site that's "leading" the poll, but just as strongly disagree with #2.

Actually, there isn't anyone close to #1 in my opinion, but I selected DT for my second choice, because I'm so fed up with their "too specific or well-covered" or "Not quite what we're looking for" rejections. But they remain my #3 earner, so that still makes them pretty satisfying.  ;)

I would agree with you on #1, there is no one coming close (and therefore I didn't pick two).

But I disagree on #2, I'd rather get an "this is not what we are looking for" than "artifacting" which I can't find anywhere in the picture. But overall no other than FT deserved my vote.

I don't think they really need an EL for a book though... anyway, interesting what is it all about :)

They need an EL if they print more than 250.000 copies...

My first EL was the 17th, bird picture, Hawk. I guess it's not just industrial, we can include things that fly too.  ;D

Ok, there we have another pattern. My first EL on SS was on the 17 and it was a bird too (a purple heron in flight).

Did Fotolia announce this?

That's a good one  ;D

Did they ever announce anything... ???

Set the minimum commission on any site to 50% - for non-exclusive files.

Change all subs plans to include size into the pricing, increase the price point (at all sites) to a minimum payout of 1$ for subs for the smallest size, a minimum price of 5$ for the smallest size for PPD.

I'm not sure that that is true.
If you go on "Your account" there is an option to opt out from "shutterstock" while staying opted in for "per picture sales / partners".
What effect that actually has I don't know (and I don't intend to try it...), but it could be what you're looking for...

Can you tell me if appealing reviews is of any use on DT?  I am afraid that my poor acceptance rate in the past may have reviewers giving my stuff greater scrutiny - assume reviewers have this information - I've had some questionable rejections lately but I'm not sure how to appeal or if it is even worth it.

I never appealed any rejections, but what works pretty good is trying to correct whatever they found and re-submit. Most of my re-submits were accepted and that helps to keep your acceptance rate up (mine is a bit above 80%).

It also seems that now that StockXpert is a subs agency they accept anything as long as it isn't missing a release.   Many contributors downsize for SS, do you submit your downsized or your full sized ile to StockXpert now that you've evidence of the abundance of subs?

No one has an opinion on this question?  I'm just really peeved at the moment to see yet another XL 30 cent JI sale.  To rub salt in the wound JI doesn't even give artists a credit line.  This seems to indicate exactly how they feel about us.

I only started at StockXpert a few month ago, so my experience is a little limited.
But in these few months I have received some XL downloads for 5$ each (which is more than I can get elsewhere for my 8.2 MP files), so it does make sense to upload full size for me.
Although the majority of sales is subs, there are the occasional PPDs - and today someone seemed to like my portfolio and downloaded 8 medium files for 1,50 each.
All in all StockXpert does look pretty good for me.

And I have to add: As I started at SS around the same time, I'm still getting 0,25$ per download there, so I can't complain about the 0,30$ subs at StockXpert...

For the "regular" licences it makes some sense, as the commission here might be a way to push people to exclusivity...

Who in their right mind would even consider going exclusive on Fotolia?

I would think that Fotolia does not talk about real artist exclusivitiy here. Instead, they say 'no non-exclusive pictures on Fotolia'. Strange...

That's what the Newsletter said, but that was obviously just bad communication. On the German FT forum it was just stated (from a FT employee) that they mean photographer exclusivity just like at istock.

Not me. But in the German FT forum you can read the first posts where people have deleted their non-exclusive files from FT...

You can bet that it is NOT an error...

Let's wait. There is no benefit for FT in doing so. Whoever buys an EL intends to make money with it. I would assume that the price is secondary, so offering ELs at low prices will not lead to a significant increase in volume.
On the other hand higher prices - obviously - means more money for FT too, so why change that?

For the "regular" licences it makes some sense, as the commission here might be a way to push people to exclusivity...

One important point I have seen: You can't change the price for ELs any more until emerald status for non-exclusive files.
Hope this is just an error, I've asked on the FT forum and am waiting for a response...

Only to make sure your to do list doesn't get too short  ;D :

How about giving users the ability to enter more sites manually?
I assume you will never be able to add all existing stock photo venues in an automated way. I for example have some (german) midstock sites that you probably never heard of (pitopia.de, digitalstock.de, shotshop.com, panthermedia.de, zoonar.de - at least the last two are mentioned here on MSG). And they do produce some sales, and although by far not as frequent as the big microsites, the amounts can add up since the prices are higher.

So a feature to add sites, add photos (if they are not already on the existing sites) and add sales manually might make sense - in the long run, definitely adding FT and StockXpert and sorting out the image matching are more important.

First impression: Looks good. Can't wait to have FT and StockXpert integrated.

Besides the image matching, that needs some tweaking (as has been mentioned here before, so let's wait...) one more point for your list: How to handle refunds. I just had a sale removed due to credit card fraud on DT, but on Lookstat it's still reflected in both total sales and on the day it was done (yesterday).

ok, created an account and will see how it works...

When you're adding Fotolia, do you consider different currencies? As I am in FT Germany, I'm paid in Euros. So you need a currency conversion somewhere in the system.
And Fotolia changed the credit value (at least in Euros in in Pounds) a few months ago, so you need to consider that credit values may be different depending on the time the credits are earned.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Is this for real?

If it's been sold before under a RF licence you can't give them what they want - that nobody else can use that image within the next year.
Anyone having bought it before might use it.
If they accept that restriction, than go for it. No idea about the right price though, but don't go too low, if they go through the effort of contacting you personally than they probably do not care about a few dollars...

General Stock Discussion / Re: How do you back up your images?
« on: February 04, 2009, 03:47 »
Avava,

maybe you should look at a NAS (Network Attached Storage) for your purposes. These are essentially specialized PCs with a bunch of hard drives in them.
You connect them to your network (most modern ones have Gigabit network connections) and then can easily access your data on the drives.
And you can configure them as RAID, i.e. they will mirror the data and protect you from the failure of a single drive.

I recently bought one (from Thecus) with 4 drives, each 1 TB, for under 900 Euros.

I did a quick search and the biggest I found was one with 16 TB (16 1 TB drives) for about 4900 Euros (on www.xtivate.de, only in German, but I bet there are other similar solutions out there). Of these you would than need three or four (depending on what RAID level you want to run).

Not the cheapest solution, but would free you from the hassle of dealing with 30 or 60 separate drives.

And, very important: a RAID solutions protects you from the failure of a hard drive, but it does not protect you from human error (accidently deleting files etc.) or from things like theft or fire - for that you still need another backup. But you could do that on a second set of NAS devices, just depending on the amount of money you want to spend...

Yea, photos older than a certain amount of time (1 year let's say) which haven't sold so far, should be deleted.

Why?

1322

I remember  how I used to need 20+ dls a day to get to Top 50 most popular vectors.

Believe it or not I managed to get to the Top 50 vectors with about 8 dls per day. This alone, proves low sales in general.

This specific argument is wrong.
The fact that a lower number of DLs gets you into the Top 50 could as well be proof of higher competition (or more precisely: the number of images offered is rising faster than the number of images downloaded - no matter if that second number is rising or falling).

One question comes to my mind: You say bandwidth is your limiting factor in uploading to SS. And you mention an image that was taken with 21 MP and downsized to 16 MP.
Why don't you (partially) solve your bandwidth problem with downsizing your images to the minimum required (4 MP)? That would significantly decrease the time to upload.
Or do you have the experience that offering higher resolution leads to higher sales on SS (on other sites I would agree not to downsize, but since SS produces an upsized "Super" version anyway...)?

Adobe Stock / Re: HOW to earn fair prices on FT

Attention: IS exclusivity is not the same as FT!
FT allows exclusivity by photo, IS only allows contributor exclusivity.
You say you sell other pictures at higher prices. If these are licensed as RF, than IS exclusivity is not for you...
