Robert's presence to the stock forums was priceless.  I'll always remember his contributions, not only here, but earlier on SS where his photoshop renderings ("the landing" comes to my mind) and his sense of humor (self-elected queen/king of the forum and Miz-points) were attracting hundreds of views.
He never considered himself an expert, thus he inspired so many newcomers.  He didn't depend on the stock financial income, so he was free to explore, and broke quite a few boundaries in the process.
Thank you for letting us know of his departure, all the very best to his family.  Thinking especially of you Wendy.  We'll definitely miss Robert.

It still says that I'm waiting on the approval of my three photos...

Unless SS policies have changed, for the approval process you need to submit 10 pictures, not 3, and 7 of these 10 (you can upload them separately) have to be approved in order for the account to remain active.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: IS keywords not showing in English
« on: November 20, 2007, 00:20 »
The language marked was English, I hadn't change it, and it didn't do anything by clicking on it.   So I switched the language to French, then back to English, and then the English list came back naturally.  Good to know how to repair a computer glitch.  Thanks!

I am not sure if it affect the sales, but today all my IS keywords are in a foreign language, for example: "Цветок Руководитель"

Is it the same for you?

Thanks for clarifying the date Lee  :)   I had remembered this good-spirited thread when it went on and did a quick search for it.

SS absorbs the price loss for subscription pictures:

http://submit.shutterstock.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8228&highlight=subscription+refund

"With subscription sales - we absorb all fraud, refunds, etc. We do not currently pass this onto the photographers. With per-pic sales we cannot do this in all cases. Currently we absorb fraud - but not refunds."

The post is from Oct 94, bur SS edited it in Mar 06, so I suppose that it is still the current policy.

General - Top Sites / Re: sell price per download
« on: November 16, 2007, 11:01 »
What's also important is the number of pictures sold per site.  Here is my ranking:

Top seller sites:
Shutterstock     $0.28
Istock     $.59

Then:
Dreamstime     $0.73
Stockxpert     $0.91

Then:
Bigstock     $0.67
Fotolia     $0.49
123rf     $0.50

Then:
Featurepics     $1.69
LuckyOliver     $1.54
Canstock     $0.55

Almost non-existent sales:
(I kept my portfolios but don't upload anymore)
Scanstockphoto     $1
Fotomedia     $1.25
Microstockphoto     $0.30

Bonjour Michel,

Great idea!

For the photos in the 'people' category, do you require a model release or are they considered as editorial pictures?

...and welcome to MSG  :)

Crestock.com / Re: Biggest Photoshop Contest of the Year!
« on: November 13, 2007, 19:34 »
Come on. They're just six pictures. That's all.

I wish that you were right, Bateleur, but I expect the contest result of these subliminal association of pictures to give some obvious results, which were expected by the Crestock team from the start, it shows a lack of dignity from the very heart of the company which associates itself with an obvious agenda.  Quite disappointing.

I think that it is exceptionally poor taste to try and make a political statement with a photo contest.

I agree.  Very unfortunate.

If you wish, list the IS lightboxes you manage in that thread so that other photographers can PM you to add some of their related pictures to it.

Or just PM a photographer to add your related pictures to a specific IS lightbox, you don't have to manage a lightbox to participate  :)

Note: a public lightbox will not be visible to other members until it contains more than one artist and over 20 images.  Don't forget to checkmark the make it "Public" box.

Shutterstock.com / Re: ANGRY REVIEWER
« on: November 08, 2007, 23:14 »
Not anymore.  I have been there though, and you may consider hard to believe, and be surprised, to know that in general reviewers would prefer by far to be in a position to accept a picture.  It's more rewarding.

These reviewers are photographers like us, some are probably participating here in this forum.  They don't have a lowly job, nor a great one either.  They chose to be reviewers because they like it, or the incentive is big enough, they wouldn't be able to continue that job otherwise.  And when they submit pictures, they get treated the same way as the non-reviewers, no difference.

Leaf, are the monthly lightboxes closed once the specific month ends?  Is it too late to prepare the link for 5 pictures of my portfolio for this October lightbox?

Whiz, here is a link for a very good depth of field summary calculator for  the f-stop / subject distance / focal length relationship:

Is this helpful?

New Sites - General / Re: The Best of the Worst
« on: November 03, 2007, 00:14 »
For real estate, it's the 3 magic words:  "location - location - location"

For microstock, it should be :  "easiness- easiness - easiness"

1.  easiness of finding the stock site = good marketing

2.  easiness of finding the picture = not only relevant keywords, but also having a system where we can efficiently eliminate the non-relevant keywords in order to pinpoint the  search result in a timely manner.

3. easiness of buying: transparency in registering, navigating, downloading, financial, and follow-up if needed.

If a new stock site focuses on there 3 easiness for the buyer, it will have success.

At this point I would go for Lucky Oliver. Once there is a significant marketing of the site done it should be good.

Just added them, great pictures Alessandro!

Who else manage DT collections?  It would be nice to have a wider variety of topics.
