General - Top Sites / Re: FTP problems
« on: April 20, 2007, 11:50 »
dbvirago I'm glad that you posted it.  For me BS and DT don't show any uploaded pictures in their unfinished section.  I was just wondering if they went through or if I had to upload them again.  Now that I know that it's a problem on their side, I'll wait.

Why don't you just listen and take us seriously - at least once in a while?

Fortunately some of them do  :)

yes i think it is unfortunate that people feel threatened to share their ifeelings here.

It is... and it could change the purpose and the usefulness of this great forum.

If the micro site is reacting to a negative comment about how they operate, I think it is out of line.

Agree.  I come here, sometimes to give, but mostly to get the raw info - not negative but informative.  I hope that it stays that way.  The intimidation used towards KiwiRob reflects more about the stock site's own insecurity and the lack to handle criticism.  Which is ironic when we know that every one of our pictures receives 'constructive' critics in the submission process.

« on: April 18, 2007, 11:15 »
Thanks Canakris.

Iofoto has 4500 pictures uploaded on SS starting about mid-January.  So about 1500 per month.  Was it mentioned earlier that his studio employs about 10 people?  Then that would make an average of 150 pictures uploaded per person per month.  Which seems reasonable.

Can you put a link for his SS profile, I can't find it.  Thanks.
Speaking about profile, can we find one if a photographer has never posted in the forum?  I tried and didn't succeed.

I used the FL zoom option to check further...

The right line of the bottle is straight indeed.  The sun reflection confused me.

I couldn't see a clear reflection of the photographer in the bottle.  Maybe I'm not looking at the right spot.

Something seems to be wrong on the right side of the bottle, just above the shadow: the straight line isn't there...  :)

Great Tina!  Yes, it's nice to see the accumulation of little quarters..  :)

Mellimage, go for it !  SS was the 1st site I was on, and for other reasons, I hesitated a while before joining IS.  Both sites are my best earners, with almost equal amounts.

CanStockPhoto.com / CanStock has FTP !
« on: April 13, 2007, 14:49 »
What a relief!  I tried the new FTP (via the free FileZilla software), and it works  :)

They now have 4 upload options to choose from:

FTP
ActiveX
Java
HTML

Well, life gets simpler everyday!

Now, if IS would do the same...

I have noticed another way for some companies to avoid paying the EL price:  they download the same image from different stock sites.

This is not a generous gesture.  It happens to me several times a week.  Suddenly a specific picture has a download from 3 or 4 stock sites the same day.  I don't take it as coincidence.  As a non-exclusive there is nothing I can do about it.

Integrity.  Some companies just don't have it.  Some companies do have it though, fortunately for them and for us.  In the end, one has to live with the consequences of our actions.

StockXpert.com / Re: Chat with Stock Photo Industry Veteran
« on: April 07, 2007, 18:27 »
The question is how will the entrance of established "brand name" stock photographers like Ron affect the industry and affect you?

For the microstock industry, this senior gentleman seems to have entered that venue along with the pioneers anyway, so there won't be any change in the industry with his added presence at SX.

For us photographers, it would obviously affect us less if you hadn't promoted him yourself on the SX site, and here.  The emphasis and the consequences are up to you.  I respect your advertising choice.  Personally, like eendicott just said, it won't affect me either because the stock style I use is completely different from his.

Right now, the SX search 'by users' shows as the main page the photographers with the larger portfolios as being first on the list - iofoto being ranked third -  so you obviously are favoring the quantity aspect.

Whereas LO chose as 'photo of the moment' a picture from Martie Venter who just joined and only had not even 10 pictures in her portfolio and no reputation to start with when they selected her.

Wherever goes attention goes life...

SS and IS are still my best earners for March 07, 30% each.

Sharpshot, yes, very nice portfolio.  I added a few comments too.

Thanks for your comments.  The "goof composition" for the brass bell made me laugh   :)

StockXpert.com / Re: SX - Inconsistency in approval process
« on: March 30, 2007, 09:34 »
Update:  The picture is online now, but I want to make sure that the revised version doesn't have something wrong with it.  So if needed I will re-upload a new version, or the previous one if it is thought that it is a better quality.

I was mentioning this situation here mostly to let the photographers know that using the 'upload a better version' once a picture is approved automatically replaces and deletes the former version, and doesn't guarantee an approval.

The new review makes sense in a way, but I wish that there would be an option for keeping the former approved version in case a reviewer decides not to approve the revised version.

StockXpert.com / SX - Inconsistency in approval process
« on: March 29, 2007, 14:03 »
Yesterday I uploaded a picture of a candle, which was approved - the whole series was.  I was very pleased.

There is an edit for each picture, as an option to replace the picture for an improved version.  I thought that I would use it this morning.  The only thing I changed is one small part of the isolation, to refine it further.

Well, I got the result:  "please upload better quality images"...

I emailed the site about it, still no answer.

I hope that in these kind of circumstances there would be an option to keep the previous approved version, even though it is of a slightly lesser quality.  Anyway, it does not inspire me to use this edit function in the future...

Mistakes are made, but it is sometimes frustrating.

After the TP fiasco, I hesitated joining a new site before it showed some signs of stability.  The masquerade approach of LO and the weird invented vocabulary, like carnies, etc. didn't -and still don't - inspire me.  The human contacts did.  As it did for TP...

I joined a few weeks too early:  the Christmas season incentive for attracting the 'big fishes' (earning double-pay for life) rewarded the late-comers only, who were able to upload hundreds or thousands of pictures in a short period of time, while I was busy with family responsibilities...  But is sure brought plenty of new oxygen to LO, which was well needed.

The upload process is so easy that it reminds me of the 'One-Click' Amazon feature.  Once the pictures are ready for the other main sites, it's no time-consuming at all to add them via FTP to the LO site too.  So, what to lose?  I'll continue uploading there, without expecting much sales at this point.

The $50 payout minimum would be a nice way to show contributors that their money isn't used for something else...  but personally with only 10 downloads up till now I'll have to wait a while anyway.

Let's hope for the best   :)

iStockPhoto.com / Creative Network - Lightboxes contributions
« on: March 26, 2007, 11:52 »
Regarding the CN community, another way to help support each other is to add to the lightboxes we personally manage some pictures from other photographers which correspond tho the specific lightbox themes.

The dynamism and the variety of styles will enrich the personal lightboxes, making them more interesting for designers.

I've got to disagree here  ;)
... and take the thread back to the original question.

I'll go back further:
If God paid you a visit and said.....
"Hey you! Mr. Stock photographer - You can have only one. Choose:"
The best tripod on this Earth.....
....or the best head to put on a tripod.
Which one would you choose.

God would definitely visit, but wouldn't say that.

The Miz would  :)

Charming.  Congratulations Darren!
SY, very thoughtful of you  :)

One thing I did notice on DT,  the   ETR,  estimated time for review, is going up!!  Not down.

I noticed that too - went from 16h wait to 20 hours.  Wonder why  ???

Shutterstock.com / Re: Summary of things I can try to get in?
« on: March 21, 2007, 13:28 »
Hi Nelson,

A summary would be:  as long as the image contains a minimum of noise, has the right exposure, is sharp, and is stock oriented, you should be fine with your next submission.

I never sharpen, nor do I continue to use a noise reduction software.  Shooting with a tripod at 100 ISO helps reduce the post-processing.

Would you have a portfolio available on another site?  We could help you choose some pictures.

All the best to you for your next submission  :)

Update:  It took 4 days after the approval for the pictures to show up online.

So everything is fine.  The reviews are done within 24h, as before, so altogether the process is still rather quick.

This is for the pictures approved after the 'migration':  they don't show up online.  I understand that there is a delay, but it used to be no more than an hour.  This is more than 48 hours...

Do you have the same problem, or are yours showing online?

Adobe Stock / Re: Totally crashing on Fotolia
« on: March 13, 2007, 21:44 »
For me the FL sales are very stable month after month, almost the same amount every month.  However, my ranking  (7 days) is not in my favor when compared with my all times rank.  In order to keep the same rank, I need more downloads.

Which means...  FL sells more pictures altogether than the previous months.  This is a good sign about the wellness of the site.

If, with the same sales, the ranking status (7 day & all time) would reverse, then I would be quite concerned about the decline of the site.  But fortunately this is not the case at this point.  :)
