Hi Roman,

You have quite a nice collection of wild animals, very inspiring.

Michael,

You may want to edit your Shutterstock thread where you name other agencies with their full name.  The initials are tolerated.

Regarding SS guidelines, here is one of Seth's posts about mentioning other stock agencies:

PLEASE DO NOT POST LINKS TO A COMPETITOR'S SITE. Also, do not refer to any competitors by name. We would appreciate if you could all follow these guidelines. Thank you.

Michael, I would be glad to use this handy MSMonitor, but before I do, I would like to know if you were able to fix the bug with the SS 'new post' search page:

http://submit.shutterstock.com/forum/search.php?search_id=newposts

All the posts disappear each time the MSMonitor is refreshed.
I know that I could access every forum individually on SS, but I prefer to have it chronologically all in one page, much more convenient.

Thanks for the link SY  :)

This is the intro page:

Energize: Microsoft PowerPoint - FrontPage - Outlook - Excel
with PowerPlugs templates, Flash, animation, pictures, 3D and more!
CrystalGraphics is the #1 provider of tools, templates and content to enhance Microsoft Office.
PowerPlugs is the brand name of our award-winning product line that will make you look good.

Here is the link for the pictures (100 pictures for $99):

http://www.crystalgraphics.com/Photos/images.pictures.main.asp

I saw that some of their pictures come from microstock photographers (some of their names I could recognized  - and definitely not exclusives - are credited)

Is this the IStock deal  referred in the Corbis thread?  Or is this something else?

Welcome Stephen!

Funny, you were lurking here while I discretely saw you active on the SS forum  ;)

Hey!  in your profile, for FL and SS, in order for the links to work, you need to put your photographer's numbers instead of your screen name.

Very nice sharp portfolios indeed!

Microstock Monitor / Re: Introducing Microstock Monitor
« on: February 15, 2007, 10:50 »
Michael, only little bugs:

Each time I refresh the statistics, it erases all the posts from the SS Latest Topics page:

http://submit.shutterstock.com/forum/search.php?search_id=newposts

This means that in order to get the SS stats, is sends a signal to logout and login again, because logging out is the only time when this page empties itself.  When we always are logged in, the recent posts stay, even when we refresh the page.  I hope that you can fix this one.

In the statistics, LO shows 'N/A' for the downloads, and IS shows 'ToDo' for both boxes.

Thanks Michael.

Adding 123RF, FeaturePics, and CanStock to the list would be great too.

If this little box can be integrated on this (MSG) site Stats in the left column, that would be even more useful than a separate floating box.
Leaf, what do you think about this idea?  And would it be easy to do?

I see what you mean GeoPappas.  Public Lightboxes on IS are supposed to include varieties of styles on a same topic from different photographers.
Series, which exist on some sites, are a way for a photographer to show more shots from the same topic within their own portfolio.  Both have different but similar purposes.
The definition of Lightboxes, Series, and Galleries, and their purpose, are different on each site, hence my confusion.  SX lightboxes remain for private use.

I would prefer to have this option available along with the personal portfolio, without having to send it to 'others'.  A check mark would be a good way to make it public if we wanted to.  Just a suggestion  :)

Well, the lightbox is for buyers who want to keep track of specific images while the browser the site, so it's a feature mainly for the buyer. Did that answer your question?

Yes it does, thanks Steve.  I got confused because of the term use.   It is used at IS for photographers to present mini-galleries on a specific topic for potential buyers to see.  Now I understand that the lightboxes at SX are the equivalent of saved temporary baskets.  If the photographer is not a buyer, then there is no need to create any lightbox on SX, it wouldn't be seen by others, thus meaningless.

Everything was fine for me up to a few minutes ago (I hardly log out, leaving every windows open in tabs, so as long as I was still logged in everything continued to be fine).  Now I'm finally joining the group.

Update:  works now.  This welcoming message has been added:

Our development team recently discovered a bug in the Search Options filter settings. Lately they haven't been retaining your settings from one log-in session to the next. In order to fix this, we've had to reset all of our members' filter settings to the default positions. You will need to reselect the Search Options you may have had set in the past. The good news is, they will now stay selected even after you log out. Thank you.

Steve, another feedback about the presentation:  the size of the fonts require the use of magnifying glasses...

Would it be possible to have an option to receive email confirmation once a picture is approved/rejected?

For the lightboxes, we need to be logged in in order to see them.  Are the lightboxes only related to the photographer's portfolio? How then can some potential buyers see them?

The "Thanks, but we are not looking for such image" should not be an option.  It is misleading because it can be interpreted two ways:

- a discrete alternative for "Please upload better quality images" - the quality of the picture is not high enough

- an assumption that by uploading such picture we don't have a clue for what is the stock photography market.  It would be better not to assume.  If SX only want a certain type of stock images, then be more specific about the rejection of such image...

Altogether, I find SX a good site, and I really appreciate the reach-out you are doing here Steve.

The great advantage of not being exclusive is to be able to compare the results.  Thus I feel good about the general results of what I upload.  SX rejections don't seem to follow any logical criteria.  Puzzling.

General Stock Discussion / Re: What's the best time?
« on: February 02, 2007, 11:58 »
Yes, ten after ten is the standard for selling watches.

I have an outside antique clock in my portfolio, the needles fell off inside the glass.  I called it 'timeless'.  It doesn't sell too much, even though I framed it so that the numbers would represent the business hours "from nine to five".

The ten past ten has the shape of a V (victory or peace), maybe that's why it's so positive.  With a darker look, I suppose that the midnight clock or a few minutes before would work too.

Adobe Stock / Re: Fotolia
« on: February 02, 2007, 10:24 »
note:  fotolia is also refered to as FT

...FT or FL

Even though there is a question mark about their total number, it is a fast-growing stock site aiming the European market. The automated translation is available for most or their languages, although it is not perfect.  Maybe if each translated site is considered as a different online picture presentation, that could justify the inflated numbers?

It is the only MS site where you can check who bought you pictures.  I like this feature.  Out of the dozen stock sites, FT ranks 4th for me.

You're right, wind chill is the accurate expression.  I realize that there is a little after RealFeel, and yes I took the info from the AccuWeather site.

Back tho the topic of the thread, if anyone else would like to be added to the LO list for adding comments for fellow photographer's pictures (the ones you like, of course), here is the place to add your link.

Lorraine, minus 20 Celsius or Fahrenheit ?  :)

Currently where I live in Iowa:

Thursday Night, Feb 1
Low: 8 F RealFeel: -20 F
Low: -14 C RealFeel: -29 C
Mostly cloudy, breezy and cold

I agree too, I was also very happy to browse through such a diversity of great portfolios.  Such a treat!

Thank you TGT, GeoPappas, Void, and Bryan, for your very detailed comments in this thread.  Heartfelt and very instructive.

As a follow-up for the 2 pictures in question, I have added comments myself, just to clarify the choices I made for the lighting and the perspective of these 2 pictures.

Oh my!  there is one photographer (not from this forum) who rated one of my picture.  So, as a thanking gesture, I rated 3 of his in an uplifting way in his portfolio.

Well... he came back to my portfolio.  I don't doubt about his good intentions of trying to help improve the quality of my pictures.   However, the downside consequences of it are that two of the shots now have some suggestions for better light (cranberries) and better angle (apple pie) for improving them  :-[

I know, my pictures are not perfect, but...  I'm afraid it will now discourage designers to choose them, or at least put a doubt in their mind.  Anyway, just wanted to share.

I appreciate everyone here who took the time to go through my portfolio and left some nice comments.  Yes, I do appreciate it a lot, thanks!

Just read them, thanks :)

Ouch, you martial belts question...
...yes, they are 'ours', my children's  ;)  would it hurt the sales if I would answer it on the LO site?  Tricky...

I left some comments too.

Any other takers?

That's a very good idea Tyler.  And it is obvious that it supports Bryan's wish to get some potential buyers' attention.  Maybe to make it more practical, have a list of the LO photographers  who would like to participate on the right column along with the lightboxes?

As a side note, there was a LO photographer a few months ago who reacted quite strongly when one of the comments was to whiten a little bit more his model's teeth.  He expressed his desire not to receive any comments on his portfolio so that the comments wouldn't influence negatively his sales.

Since in this context the idea is to have more exposure to get some sales, I would suggest to leave comments only for the pictures we find appealing, the same way we only gave a 5-star rating for our preferred pictures on each IS portfolio.

My LO portfolio is:

yes, I hardly think that rating fights are 'an Italian thing'.  Perhaps what ying yang meant was that this apparent fight between the three of you was something internal between the three of you for some reason... making it italian.

That was my feeling too.

I just remember that a few months ago I chose a DT picture from Alfiofer for one of my collections, and I had a nice exchange with him.  I hope that I didn't get him in trouble because of the 1 star ratings he gave to snem.  If this could be solve amicably, that would be great.

Wow Digiology, after having read your post, I went to see Snem's portfolio.  Angelafoto gave hin 2 times 2 stars, and Alfiofer gave 5 times 1 star, and nothing else...

These ratings are all new, they were not there 2 days ago when I first went through Snem's portfolio.  Definitely an unscrupulous agenda!

Alfiofer, like Snem, is also an Italian photographers, mmmhh...
Very sad...
