iStockPhoto.com / Re: Istock rejections based on Model Release
« on: August 31, 2008, 02:54 »
Hi Yuri, I find the Istock process so tiedious that I only upload there once in a blue moon but I have also had issues with AWOL Model releases of late as well as ALL IPTC Data going missing. I upload via the HTTP uploader because it seems like the bulk upload tool thhere that I paid them for always has one bug or another in it.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Copyright protection of photos
« on: August 28, 2008, 23:52 »
Bottom line, it is $35 bucks every 3 months to register the copyrights of everything you could possibly publish in the quarter. $35 and a few minutes filling out a simple online forum and then burn a disc of thumbnails and mail them off and you are fully protected. The way I see it is there is absolutely no reason not to register your copyrights. You can even do it all online now but it seems the US Gov has not yet caught on to FTP or Java based uploading and is using an HTML up-loader which is a pain if you are registering a large collection. So I simply do the forms and payment on line and then mail the hard copy DVD. Easy, Breezy, Copyright!

General Stock Discussion / Re: IPTC Requirements for all Sites
« on: August 28, 2008, 23:45 »
The description being used as the title at Fotolia is a bug that they will hopefully fix  soon for the (third) time

The best keyword advice I can offer is be concise, focus on the main elements of the photos, repeat top 3 keywords in title, description and keywords and don't get to conceptual with your keywords. Trying to cover every concept no matter how vague it may be in an image is what leads to most key word spam. Also depending on the site less is more when it comes to best match and relevance. My personal preference is for each image to rank well in a search for two or 3 main keywords rather then ranking way down the list in every keyword I can think of. That is what works for me but your mileage may vary.

Congrats!

Let us know when the Final Round kicks in!  Will it be the same voting system?

Claude

They have not announced how the final round will be handled yet but I have heard rumors of a public vote to narrow it down to a top 3 and then the editors might make the final selection but that is not confirmed at this time.

I will repeat though that all the support received from here is sincerely appreciated

A deep heartfelt thank you to all who took the time to help Stacey Scott in the 944 Cover Model Contest

She just received confirmation that she was selected as the Peoples Choice Winner For September and now moves on to the Finals Round which will happen later in the year.

While I don't doubt that designers stockpile their downloaded images you will find that Stockpiling images for extended periods of time is typically prohibited in the EULA of the various subscription based agencies.

133
Honestly the images you present here have multiple issues going against them. You need to be aware that all copyright  or trademark protected content with in the images will need to be removed in post production.

Also from a conceptual standpoint you have to ask yourself what would these images be useful to advertise or illustrate? In all honesty I do not see anything in them that  shows they have  strong conceptual themes that would sell retail products, services etc.

The third issue I see is composition. Your composition is all over the map. Using the last image as an example you have cut off the left side of your subject and the horizontal sight line of the image is tilted to the right

When considering the images you would shoot or submit for stock you need to consider the final use of the image and ask yourself "How can this image be used to sell, market, promote or describe a product service or story. While stock can have artistic touches in it the truth is much of stock is merely meant to be a single element in an overall design. The artist aesthetic is often lost on stock. This is an industry that begs for you to shoot with business in mind not art.

Don't give up though, it is just a matter of learning to alter your thought process while shooting. You can surely do it if you choose to.

Lighting / Re: Paper or cloth for isolations
« on: August 17, 2008, 19:56 »
Well before building my studio and building the 2 wall cyclorama I preferred white seamless paper. It was affordable, durable and readily accessible to me. For portability it also comes in 3' and 4' rolls which work well for single subjects.

Yea I kind of agree but the idea was to recreate the illustration. The original image is a painting not a photo. Unfortunately our body painter was not as experianced as the original painter.

With the exception of her panties all the clothing is paint

Yea I suppose it would have helped to explain it better. Other then the first shot which was the one the model insited she had to recreate we tried to take it in a Grind House Movie direction. A little graphic novel mixed with a lot of campy color.

Today at Vegas Vision Studios we went in a bit of a different direction. We took inspiration from an original 1940's illustration by Zdzislaw Beksinski and created our own take on the Pin Up Zombie. Your thoughts are appreciated

Well I am impressed that they really did listen to us and even more impressed that they took action on what we said. I guess it goes to show that we really do have the power to bring about change. Thank you Steve and the StockXpert and JI teams. Your level headed business response to the situation is greatly appreciated.

I am sure that the size discrepancies will be a deterring issue for some if it disqualifies them from PPD on Photos.com. I am not sure if the percentage of images affected will be significant enough to warrant a change or maybe the launch of a smaller (read less expensive) Large size PPD option. I do however suspect that if the volume of images available for PPD is significantly impacted by the sizing issue that it will be addressed.

Ok so now I am off to opt back in to Subs and Photos.com. I think I will still hold off on opting into Partner Licensing until partners are actually announced and we have the opportunity to see how those deals will be structured.

Thanks again StockXpert and JI for restoring a bit of my faith in the Agency side of this Industry.

People seem to forgot that the biggies are the most vulnerable. With the exception of Iofoto all totally rely on their MS-income they don't play any significant role in macrostock or assignments and even iofoto confessed recently that he had a big turndown in his assignments. They are slaves to the system and have no choice than to say yes to any change they are just toys for the agencies!
Though i'm a professional photographer i don't rely on my MS-income and i'm very happy about it!

This is not true, we are not slaves to the Agencies and we can and do stand up to them when their changes are detrimental to our business. You need to understand that I have to literally make the time to come here and be vocal but before I did I got vocal with management one on one first. What is true is that we have far more equitable ways to express our displeasure with policy changes and spend our time then duking it out on the forums

Whjat a storm in a tea-cup. Would u lot ever quieten down ur like a bunch of old whining women goin on about a few cents. teh reason why the biggies are not making so much noise is there not intrested in any moral victory. ELs dont account for much on StockXpert or anyplace else and its unlikely they will in the future.

BettyBoob you should consider going back to being a ditzy comic book character cause you what you understand about business would obviously fit inside your teacup.

What makes you think that your little mind could ever presume to think for me or my contemporaries?

Well it is starting to look like StockXpert and JI are done with the discussion. I am betting they move forward withoput changing the EULA to a more favorable alternative for the contributor

Yea you get a piece of the single image sales of XL and XXl but at what cost.

I don't know the exact math but for the sake of argument lets say your cut of an XL download is $100 which sounds like a nice bump until you offset it by knowing that in the same time frame in which you received the single $100  download you also sold who knows how many 30 cent downloads. 30 cent downloads that carry the same terms of use as a standard EL anywhere else. So sy you sell on PPD file and 30 sub files for a total revenue of $130.00 but now lets extrpolate that 4 of those 30 cent sub downloads get used for print for resale items. With an EL at Shutterstock being worth $28 I have just lost $112.00 in EL Revenue to gain $100 in PPD revenue.

« on: August 08, 2008, 00:58 »
Hi All, as you may remember last month I asked for your help by asking you to

PLEASE VOTE FOR STACEY
In THE 944 Magazine Cover Model Contest
http://www.944.com/covers/vote/?ID=8471

Well the bad news is that even with all your help in the end she lost last month by just a couple of votes.

The good news is this is a new month and a new contest and you can VOTE AGAIN

She is once again firmly in the lead and with your help should be able to withstand any last minute push from the competition this month.

If you did not vote last month you will have to register to vote but it only requires an email address and 944 is not spamming those who register.

If you don't get a confirmation email after registering just log in on a fresh browser page and then go to the voting link. The only vote that counts is the little THUMBS UP ICON directly above the comment box so be sure you click on that.

Once you have voted feel free to also leave a comment or to rate the cover (it is my photo)

Your help here is greatly appreciated and I am more then happy to do all I can to help any of you out in any contests you may be competing in now of in the future to return the favor of your support.

Thanks,
Bobby

I opted out and then coincidentally had my best day in the past 3 months but for the most part it made little to no difference in my daily totals

I agree, major players who have not opted out have not yet done so because they are unaware of what is being pulled with this EULA at Photos.com. I have no doubt that there is not a pro level contributor out there that could possibly be in agreement  with the subscription terms in the EULA of Photos.com

150
It is rare that an agency does anything to increase the contributors bottom line. The only bootom line this one will increase is the Fotolia bottom line. Look at the price difference for the same subscription volume. The single seat is $125 less then the unlimited but we get the same money.
