So I started this business in October... I'm up to a portfolio of 750 on Shutterstock, and similar at other sites. I really have only been uploading regularly to Shutterstock, Adobe and iStock... some Dreamstime and Bigstock. Everywhere else seems a waste of time. Anyway, today I sold an extended license for the first time. Woot! And a few days ago I discovered my image in Forbes. Very excited. Seems like business is getting a bit better with each hundred photos. I also started a YouTube channel which adds some more fun to the whole thing! Just wanted to share!    ;D

So the royalty statements are out... that's great, but I'm new to this and I can't find the answer to this... why do some sales result in a $0 commission? How come it shows the sale amount as negative? Ugh. If someone knows I'd love to know.  I feel ripped off. I worked hard to make those images!

iStockPhoto.com / ESP Downloads YTD accurate?
« on: February 03, 2017, 10:20 »
So I've been looking through the messages here and if this question has been asked, I apologize. I know that more information on sales and stats will become available Feb 6 and 20th, according to the info given. I'm just wondering then, if the number that I see under Downloads Year to Date is accurate? If so, I'm relatively pleased. But not wanting to get my hopes up. Anyone see this too?

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Amounts disappeared from Stats Page

People keep saying they can see their total earnings but for me there is nothing. Nada. I don't get it. Seriously thinking of leaving.

Thanks. I don't have a foreign tax ID. Ugh. So much effort for 25 cent royalties.
I am noticing that iStock is a pain. Reviews take about a month, it's difficult to see where the earnings are coming from and DLs are pathetic compared to other agencies. I always thought they were supposed to be big. What happened?

31
Ok I see per older posts that an ITIN is not needed. Does that also mean no US tax return?

32
I'm finding it really hard to determine if I need to apply for a US ITIN number from Canada. All agencies have allowed me to submit tax forms without it but not iStock. What have others done? And do you have to submit a US tax return? I'm not making that much money yet. I'd like to avoid it.
Thanks.

Newbie Discussion / Re: How long until I make sales?
« on: December 21, 2016, 13:56 »
Hey thanks! Well, I'm not sure if my vectors or photos sell better - given how many of each I have uploaded, maybe its about 50/50... and being a few months new, its harder for me to tell. I can definitely say that my seasonal images do the best but that's not surprising given the time of year. I find that if its something I can picture in a flier or an article/blog, and it moves me emotionally, then it sells. I think I'm making $2-5 a day so far, and I'm always thrilled when I see the counter go up! Last week, a vector sold that was close to my heart... something I created that meant a lot to me... probably the most satisfying so far.  I'll be getting my first SS payout in January. Woohoo! For me, sales from Shutterstock and Adobe (Fotolia) are about even.... more downloads from SS, but higher sales from Adobe, so my earnings are about the same from each. I've sold pitiful amounts from the other agencies so far. I'm no longer bothering with RF because its taken them months to review my stuff.  Are you willing to share you portfolio? You can pm me... it'll be great to hook up with another newbie!

Sharpshot, thanks. I really appreciate your comments and feedback. Giveme5 may have a point too. It was hard to hear, but oh well. I'm trying. I think about what might sell and try to have concepts in mind when I shoot. Otherwise I just do what brings me pleasure... things that I really like. And I've been pleasantly surprised at the range of images and illustrations that have sold. It's a pretty high percentage of my portfolio. I really really appreciate you encouragement...

Taking this down. Seemed like info not shared here. People are guarded about their ports? Anyhow.

I'm still in a slow day with 3 DLs. After 6pm, I don't expect a lot more... I'm also frustrated because I still can't find any of where my photos/illustrations have been used. Whenever I reverse image search, I either find my own portfolio or nothing. There have been enough DLs now that something should pop up. I still think I'm doing something wrong. Or maybe they just are taking a loooong time to index.

Oh good! It's not just me. Haha it's great when things are going well but this slow down is brutal. And I've still been uploading quite a bit. SS is taking longer to review than they were. Need a good big sale to make my day.

Makes sense... it's crappy  :'( but it makes sense. Sigh. Someone on another board welcomed a newbie by saying "welcome to the addiction"... haha. Totally get that! I need to stop checking my microstockr stats.  ::)

Oh really? I didn't know that. I'm glad I posted... does it get better in January?

So I'm chugging along pretty well with a good number of sales per day (imo, for a newbie) and suddenly the last three days, zero. Nothing. I'm guessing weekends are generally slower? But I've never had a Friday to Monday with zip. Those with more experience, tell me!

43
Thanks ShadySue but that's what I mean... I tried that and can't find anything. Can you give me any more detail? I must be doing something incorrectly.

44
Thanks guys... I must be doing something wrong though since I've now sold many and I can't find a single one. For example on TinEye, do I just upload the original photo? And for Google, what exactly do I search? "Copyright..."

45
Hey guys,

Now that I'm more into the swing of this microstock thing, I'd like to get out and shoot more people and places. Does anyone use 1 generic release that is accepted by all the main sites? Or do you have to get people to sign and fill out multiple forms. Seems like no one will be willing if I ask them to do this.

Also wondering if everyone here uploads to all the lower tier sites or if its a waste of time?

Thanks
Rachel

Hmmm I tried those things and found nothing. I've had about 100 downloads over the last month. Should I just give it more time maybe?  Thanks everyone. I had no idea you could do these searches. Someone mentioned their work being used for questionable uses... do you mean inappropriate stuff? Has anyone had that experience?

47
I'm just curious if anyone has ever seen their work being used? If so, how did you come across it?

So I've made a few more vectors and uploading ore pictures every day or two. I'm not getting a handful of sales daily, but I'd really like it to be more.  In the last week though I've gotten more sales than the previous two months.

I'm learning a lot about keywording and am concentrating most on holidays. I've done lots for Christmas and now doing some for New Years. And whatever else suits my fancy I guess.

Thank you! I actually do quite enjoy the vectors so maybe I will make a point of increasing those along with the photos. I'm trying to upload at least every other day.  That autumn vector sold a few times. Good advice!

Oh, and the other thing I've noticed is lots of sales on my isolated Christmas objects.
