Hi, I found a fraud account on Shutterstock.

Stolen from this account.

Probably stolen from his Storyblocks unlimited download account.

And probably all the clips are from that account.

Danger of contributing to "unlimited download" stock sites. I don't understand why some people do it. If anybody knows the Tattoostock/Stockmedia/ProStockMedia, please let him/her know about this. I reported the same account on Pond5 and got the fraud account removed ASAP, but don't know how to contact Shutterstock.

I actually did, but haven't heard back. So, I won't do anymore. It's up to the original content owner to take action. This consequence was very expected when people contribute to unlimited download stock sites. So, good luck to everybody who contribute to those unlimited download sites like Storyblocks. It's an easy call for crooks to just sign up at unlimited download stock sites and just download videos 24/7 and create fake account. That's why I don't contribute to those sites like Storyblocks.

But he doesn't contribute to Storyblocks. So his clips were downloaded from Shutterstock or AdobeStock on cheap subscription by fraud account thief. When you start selling your clips very cheap on those video subs, your clips can be stolen like that. I only sell on Pond5 now for decent price which won't make sense for those thieves to pay to download to post as their own clip.

BTW, I used Tineye.com reverse image search to find those clips from different accounts by screen capturing the thumbnail of videos.

Im not convinced this isn't the same image farm working with multiple accounts as opposed to individuals nicking the same thing.

As far as SS similars go - it seems to catch them uploaded in the same batch *but* not if theres a time gap and its a different batch.
I accidentally uploaded the same batch twice, about 4 weeks apart a while back and they all got accepted twice.

On a related note:- is it me or has Google Images made it much harder to find identical images online than it used to?

For all the (deserved) criticism of the use of AI more and more it strikes me one area it could be useful for is detecting similar images *and video* to stop this sort of thing.

The fact it's not suggests to me agencies arent overly bothered.

There are 2 problems: convince the giants (a quality AI works need a decent investment) and the interest of the business shareholders - they have money from all accounts.
And then - what the next? The law enforcement needs also good money. And finally: does the criminal a money to pay? Otherwise again - the government have to feed them in prison.

This is how I found those.

I do empty keyword search on Storyblocks and sort by most downloaded.

Then I capture thumbnail of a clip and do reverse image search on Tineye.com.
https://tineye.com

And you sometimes find multiple link to other stock sites by multiple contributors.

You can do specific popular keyword search to see if there are thieves too. If you upload to Storyblocks, you may want to see if your best selling clips are uploaded by somebody else.

Yes, it can be a nightmare. Unlimited download can devalue your clips in the long run. Not a good move.

I generally look at the description/title to work out the original.

Typically the original with have a literate, sensible headline and the stolen ones just a mess.

One prominent stock video creator I messaged about their clips stolen just messaged me their clips were stolen from Artgrid. Yes, Artgrid is an unlimited download stock video site just like Storyblocks is. Good luck if you sell you clips on those unlimited download sites!!!

You can't file a DMCA takedown notice unless you are the copyright holder or representative. But you can, and I have, reported a portfolio full of stolen work to SS compliance and had the portfolio taken down.

When I wrote I gave them half a dozen examples of the thief's image on Shutterstock and the original elsewhere. The last time I did that was in the fall of 2020; no idea if things have changed since

Another account(s) where i suspect they're working together.

One of them was dumb enough to post "look at my image" onto the FB group.

An image of apples. Which "similar" immediately showed was a cropped image of another account.

His account contains almost entirely stolen images.

Further to that the second account ALSO contains mainly stolen images and that image is actual a 180 degree flip of an image belonging to a 3rd account. Which also contains suspicious images.

Unsplash and Pixa are the sites of choice for "sourcing" content.

Although a lot now are exploiting free trials from real agencies to download collections OR abusing real subscription accounts to use up the left over month quota to obtain images (advertised a lot on FB).
Also using left-over quote to boost images on request, for a fee. Again advertised a lot on FB.

What gets me with SS is they literally have the ability to detect this on upload - their "similar images" often show identical images 3-4x right below the current selected one.
It really wouldn't be hard to script so thats checked on upload and suspicious images are flagged for real person review.

I jumped thru their hoops and got the clip removed, but for some reason, that wasn't enough to terminate his account.

No other clip of mine are in his 6 page portfolio, but since he had one of mine before, there's a chance he has others from other contributors.

Judging by those who smugly announce their earnings on FaceBook groups, I'd say that plenty make some decent money before being shut down. The fraudsters also recommend setting up multiple accounts in various family member names, so that if one gets shut down, everything is not lost.

Once you start looking for similars, it's a rabbit hole, and you might find the same image, with minor changes, in several different accounts. It becomes difficult to figure out where the original has come from, but each account that gets closed is just the tip of the iceberg.

I'm sure those with only a page of images don't make much, unless they get a lucky large sale, but some of these portfolios are quite big, and have been online for some time.

Over a thousand quality images covering major holidays and events, and from the ID numbers, the first were uploaded in March 2023. The 90 day wait period has long since passed, so even at $100 a month earnings, this contributor has potentially made $1000 or more.

SS has shut down family members because of IP address, camera data and computer sharing. It's not as easy as some FB brag.

To be fair, and balanced, many do not have thousands of images. There was a entire group a couple months ago, that all had under 50. I'm not finding the limited number of exceptions, who have gotten past being shut down, but the more usual, who open the account, post a set, and disappear.

How many people do you know who make good money from 50 images?

I'm sure we both agree that all the agencies, especially SS should do more to find and eliminate these people.

What FB group, I'd love to go read what they have to brag about. I can't understand how thieves, with collected images, make more than people here who are smart and work hard?

Family members don't necessarily live at the same address or share an IP, and I know for a fact of some contributors doing this. As I also know of legitimate contributors running two separate accounts from the same IP.

The thieves make money because they skim off better content. We all know that, as a general rule, 20% of the images make 80% of the money, but if they are selecting the best images, then they can certainly increase the sales percentage in their favour. It's always been quality over quantity, so if you steal 50 spectacular images, then they are likely to make more than a beginner with 50 snapshots of his back yard.

I'm sure people wouldn't keep contributing if they weren't earning anything as, even with stolen content, you still have to upload it. If you only make a dollar a week, then people wouldn't bother.

If you then add on the number of 'free trial' accounts that only download this content, then it doesn't take long to start earning.

Bottom line, I don't care whether it is lucrative for them or not, but I care about a database being flooded with stolen content that heavily competes against the legitimate stuff.

As for the FaceBook group, search Shutterstock Contributors, Shutterstock Contributors Worldwide, etc. There are loads of groups, and they all have a smattering of crooks bragging about their successes.

Hi everyone,
I can't open a new topic, so I'm replying to this one which talks about the same problem.

Unfortunately, I've been experiencing a serious problem for weeks.

I don't know if it has already been reported but there are hundreds of accounts that, with portfolios of around 350 images for each of them, resell our photographs. It's easy to spot them because the images are automatically edited with a filter that warms them and adds a reddish glow in one corner.
I have already notified Shutterstock but they always ask for DMCA making it difficult and slow to report.
Some accounts have been shut down but are popping up all the time, so I shared an ever-updating list with someone who works at shutterstock to try to create alarmism and solve this serious problem, perhaps the cause of this huge drop in sales.
The tactic is always the same. Flipped photos, cropped photos, photos with different color temperature and are often registered users in Romania.

I'll paste the current list here and will keep you updated as soon as shutterstock lets me know something about it.

Valid points. I remember on the old SS forum, a thief was discovered and quite a few of us contributors were browsing through his port of stolen goods. The images selected were extremely high quality. Like the best of the best with all different kinds of subjects. It was quite a decent sized port too if I recall correctly. I wouldn't be surprised if this thief was making a ton of money.

I looked at the first five, 404 error. Either they are gone already or something is different on the Spanish site from the English site? But none of the checked links is anything.
