Title: networking -- What are you looking for in a match?
Post by: cascoly on March 25, 2013, 14:33
since we'll be starting with just 5 links, we need to decide who best to linkl with - some may want similar sites, others complementary.

here's a start -- fill in the following info, and i'll maintain it as an online table -  it will let us set up links, but, also, for now, it can also serve as a list of all symbiostock sites

Awesome topic!

I know for me personally, I'd like to network up with a person who does a lot of business/slide-show type art.

Also a photographer or two who has a nice assortment of blue-collar / white collar images.

Then leave the other 2/3 slots for whatever else happens to work out.

I'd want to keep nudes or racy content out of my search results.

I haven't set up my wordpress site yet, but my stuff is mostly travel and nature.

I'm missing people, so I think travel and nature images with people would be a complementary match for at least one slot.  Otherwise, I'm not fussy!  Like Leo I'd like to keep it G-rated though.

Wow. Its like I'm setting up a dating site. Let me know if anyone finds a good match a few days from now. Stock photography has been revolutionized!

my photo topics: travel, nature, landscape, backgrounds, objects, wildlife, concepts, homelife,
what I'm looking for: business, business people, portraits, lifestyle and maybe travel/nature for a crossover complimentary section (all must be G rated as well, no nudity or suggestive/lingerie stuff)
portfolio size: 2000+ photos, handful of vectors & videos

I think we need to include portfolio size, as its great to network with someone who has the type of images you are after, but if they are only going to have 15 images online, then it's probably not much help. I think we need to include how many images we plan to offer directly from our site to give everyone a fair idea of what we can offer.

Great topic btw, can't wait to get this happening. Does feel a little like Perfect Match from the 80's though...

I have some street and travel photography  but dont have many people shots in portfolio.

what I'm looking for: looking for someone who sees me as a decent pick  ;D

what you're looking for: same general fields but complementing, not competing images, outdoor people, G-rated please. Actually: I am not too sure what I should look for. I can't imagine that networking with someone who has focus on e.g. business people would help either of us. Same goes for, say, most vectors. But I have never been in an image buyer's shoes. I am definitely open to Lizard's "someone who sees me as a decent pick", especially if I can understand why.

I know what you mean Pilens, I am not entirely sure what the right pick would be, but my thinking on it at the moment is getting people who are slightly complimentary (say, 25% similar types as me) , but mostly different content so as to attract a wider range of buyers to our network.

From there perhaps someone who wants to buy a woman with a headset over white may also decide to buy a background image while on the same site?

I don't know, those with more experience as buyers may shed some more light on this.

Steve

Thanks Steve.
For the 3 alternative pages on the home page, do you mean the image slider? For that, I created a static page for the home page (and set it as the home page in Settings > Reading, and on that page put a slider gallery. I am trying one called Metaslider, but there are lots out there.

For the new menu items, In the backend, under Appearance > Menus you can create custom menus and add whatever pages you want to them, and then assign them to one of 4 menu locations on the site. I have custom menus added to the 'Above Header' and 'Header Menu' locations.

Hi Ruchos

I'm with Blue Host now and have no trouble with images below 10M - above that I get an error after uploading when I go to the Process page which tells me the image was not named properly or something like that.

Do you use FTP for your larger images or the in-theme uploading process?

I use the in-theme uploading. Haven't tried FTP yet.
In the Symbiostock settings page, go to the settings tab, and search for "memory_limit" and see what it is set at.

Steve

Steve, I'm with Bluehost too so I suppose I'll need to do the same.  I keep seeing references to php.ini but being clueless when it comes to programming I'm not sure how to go about that.  Is is something that's easy enough to explain here in the forums with a few simple steps?  If so I'd appreciate the direction once you've done it successfully.

Title: Re: networking -- What are you looking for in a match?
Post by: steheap on March 31, 2013, 20:27
Well, I just did it.

Here are the steps. Open notepad (in Windows) and type:

upload_max_filesize = 32M
post_max_size = 32M

Then save as php.ini

Go to File Manager in the public_html area of your site.  File manager is in the cPanel. This is the area of the server that contains all the top level files. You should see the Symbiostock_rf folder here to check you are in the right place. Click on upload, find your php.ini file and upload it into the top level directory. If you refresh your site and look in the "testing" part of the Sybiostock config pages, you should now see these two variables set to 32M.

I just tried a bigger file and it worked fine.

Steve

Thanks Steve - I'm good with finding the file manager and public_html area and I see the Symbiostock_rf folder.  I'm just not sure exactly what you mean by top level directory.  In this case would it be the one that has the name of my site, the highest level folder above the Symbiostock_rf folder, or is one tha tis even higher than that?

If you can see the Symbio folder, you are in the right area. That is the top level of your stock photo site. Just put the php.ini in there

Hmmm - I'm doing something wrong here.  I did a copy & paste from your text so that's identical and when I view the Symbiostock_rf folder I see the new php.ini upload but when I refresh and view the testing area I'm not seeing any changes.

My post_max size is 64mb already, as set by my host, as is my upload_max. My PHP memory limit is 128mb.

I'm having no problems with most of my earlier, smaller files, but anything off my D800 just fails. Yet to work out the exact file size limit, but thinking its something like over 10-15mb just leaves an empty "Process Images" page with only the first image processed, but without the actual image - just its keywords and title etc.

I did it!!!  Y'all will make a programmer of me yet  ;D  First problem was notepad automatically throwing on a .txt extension which wasn't visible in Windows file manager but could be seen in the control panel, had to get rid of that.  Second problem was my confusion on top level directory.  I just kept installing and deleting until I got it to work - it needed to go into the Public_html directory which was two levels above the Symbiostock_rf folder.

Thanks Steve!

Stock URL: http://www.BackyardStockPhotos.com (http://www.BackyardStockPhotos.com)

I've reposted this because I have finally made a successful move to a new host - BlueHost and got the site looking something like a real agency.

I'll look for matches soon - my portfolio is mainly travel, landscape, cats, macro, still life - not many people. I'm not sure what would be the best match - is it similar portfolios to make sure a buyer looking for a cat sees a wider range, or is it to fill out missing gaps?

I think the former is more logical - not many buyers will come to my site just to search for a topic that is in their mind - I'm sure they will get there because they have searched for bengal cat stock photo in Google and perhaps I don't have the ideal one for them, but I know someone who does!

One thing to check with this networking is that we all have our sites set to activate networking. I just added theruchos to mine but when I searched for a common phrase I got a whole lot of errors. I removed it and tried a different site (tinny) and success this time.

Anyone else having issues with theruchos?

Beautiful site farbled.
Thanks! I try. A designer once told me that if you sell photos or photo services, let the photos sell the site. So less is more for me.

I wonder why that is. I have logos loaded into all the various locations in Sybio. I notice that the other site doesn't show logos either. Your site works fine in my search.

Did you do anything about logos apart from create and upload?

I found the issue - I had wrongly named the logo files!!!

It works now.

Christine - can you check your logos on the "network" page. Copy the URL and put it in a browser - it should show the logo.

I've tried adding some of your sites to mine but I must be doing something wrong.

I just need to add the URL to the networking page and check "activate network" right?

Yes, then search for a term in the search box - best if you search for one that exists in your own site when you are troubleshooting

Thanks Steve. I added your site and gave it another try.

It sort of works, I see a result of yours, but the thumbnail doesn't load.

Go to www.stompstock.com (http://www.stompstock.com) and search for "stars".

I did the search on your site. My image with stars did appear - maybe had to wait a bit for it. When I get this really motoring I think I may move again to a more powerful host where I don't share resources with everyone else!

Title: Re: networking -- What are you looking for in a match?
Post by: steheap on April 02, 2013, 09:20
There is an issue with compound phrases - so if I have "gold coin" for a keyword, neither gold, coin or "gold coin" will find it. Leo is aware.

It would be found if I also had "gold" and "coin" as separate keywords in their own right, which is a bit of a workaround.

Are you searching for a single word?

Ok I resinstalled the themes it works now:)

ok for teh network search if I search Thailand for example I got 5 hits on my site, and 0 on the 2 sites I am linked it: travelling light and backyard

However if someone land on my page and search for China then it does not display the one hit from  travelling light.

Hope Leo can find find a solution later:)

I've been trying to think of a better way to network than just having the 5 links that may or not be working.  I understand Leo's concern about large searches

here are several ideas (these could be set as search options, so each site could decide whether to use them or not):

* send the buyer to the complete list of symbio sites so they can choose site(s) that interest them

* randomly select 'similar' sites -- if we make the networking page into an online SQL db table, you can then search based on 'travel', nature, etc -- I've done something similar for my recipes db  http://cascoly.com/trav/recipes/recipemain.asp (http://cascoly.com/trav/recipes/recipemain.asp)

Finally I found time to set up my site and play a bit.

Here's my update:

MSG name: PiLens
website: Outdoor Photography by Stephan Pietzko
url: http://www.imagoborealis.com (http://www.imagoborealis.com)

My site is with Bluehost and set for networking. Feel free to try.

I've uploaded and processed 10 images so far. All had a full set of metadata but 3 of those 10 lost all metadata when processed. I tried same images again and processing went through without any loss of metadata.

One image file produced an error  "No matching image files found. You may have named them incorrectly. Fix problem and re-upload. This file has been removed.", which was weird because I knew it was there (in the upload folder). Turned out to be a naming problem: File name was xxx..jpg. Removing the extra dot solved the issue.

Then I played around with menus and pages. Everything worked great for a while. But then I found myself stuck with a problem similar to one described here: widgets wouldn't show and commenting was enabled (although everything was off in settings). Changing page templates didn't solve the issue. Updating to version 1.19 didn't help either. Renaming the page finally did! So it seemed to be some naming conflict. Still strange though, because the page title didn't match anything but the tag line for my site. Reading also all the reports about the search/keyword/category issues I get the impression that Wordpress really doesn't like any matching text at all.

My portfolio is heavy on food and isolated with some sports and people.  Ideally, I would like to network with contributors with people, lifestyle type ports, but I'm open to any type.  I have about 700 RF images, but I'm going to weed out some of the stuff that doesn't sell.  I'm also optimizing each image for SEO, so my upload process will take some time.

It would be good to see how many images are online on each site. Not doing this daily, but perhaps a once a week update. I'm not sure the details of which sites we have in our "5 partners" will add much value as I am pretty sure I will change mine about once I really get the hang of the multiple search results and decide which sites add value to the sort of images I have.

I'm sure that will change with experience as we see how buyers use our sites.

Steve

BTW - I'm working hard on images today and so my total will be 100 by the end of the day.

I've added a column for actual images online

re the list of links - I was thinking of eventually making a network graph of sites that could show who links to whom, and trace whatever metrics we might decide could be useful - traffic sent, received, etc.

still trying to think of better ways to network the searches rather than having to set up the actual links, while still keeping in mind the concern about the time it takes

Congrats on getting to 75! I'm finding it to be hard work making sure that you have a good description, put bold font on the important words etc. I hope it pays off in the Google search rankings! I've just passed the 100 image point, but time for a rest...

Just a comment on your images - the watermark is very prominent, and could put off a buyer as you tend to focus a lot on the words of the watermark to the detriment of the image behind. Just my thoughts!

I have been thinking about that and that I may have to redo things.  I am also wondering how I am going to handle editorial images...... any suggestions anyone?

Just an FYI, I will hopefully be getting a re-watermarking script up and available. So you don't have to delete/re-upload to fix this. In the meantime feel free to change your watermark for future images and wait for me to release the plugin. Either someone else will make it or I will soon :D

Yay!  I just spent the last few hours swapping out 25 images to change my watermark and I think it may still be a bit too strong.  The ability to revise the watermark without having to upload again would be very useful.

Someone mentioned about listing all members on our sites even if they are not part of our network - I think this is probably a good idea as search engines seem to like links.  If you did not like what someone does on their site you could just miss them off :)

I have used the information from Cascoly's table to create this page and just tucked it away with the information pages sort of out of sight but where search engines might go

My site is
http://stockabily.com (http://stockabily.com)
I have now about 300 pictures there and target to have 7000 within the next 6/8 weeks.
I'm fighting to get things as I want them to be and I have got valuable info from this forum!
I do not know yet if I have to network with similar or with complementary....I'm thinking about it;

I have many practical questions, but try to figure out with the info given. There are points for which I have not been able to find answers:
1) How can we change the size of the text for the "image categories"? I like to have a smaller text for the categories as it will fill more than one sreen with the actual size
2) Is there a way to edit picture by category or by filtering with keywords. Otherwise once we will have many pictures there it will be a problem to edit them.
3) is there a way to make bulk change in categories once published or shall it done one by one.
Thanks in advance!
Jean

This is a good idea, but don't make your list too long.... I believe that google doesn't like long link lists ( 20?)

I am finding that my watermark barely shows on some images, and others, it is way too prominent. I thought about changing it yesterday, but didn't want to break anything so didn't. I will wait for Leo's fix. It will be awesome to be able to control that on the fly.

I added a 'Friends of Symbiostock in the last update -- as the list gets longer I can split it up intio individual pages - vectors, nature, etc if that's thought useful

if you want to copy the list from my page, easiest is to do a view source and then copy the table(s) into excel -- you'll get all the columns separated and can choose which you want to list.

also more backlinks to these pages should help - I have several places on my cascoly.com where I can include links, so no one page will have too many links

That's a good suggestion. But I think I am stuck with my watermark for now. I thought I read that if I change it now that I have already started adding images, it will break something. Is that true or can I change the watermark image and re-upload any time?

I'm going to make a prominent statement in my description, in the same way as I am saying "Model release available" or "No model release" if it is a part of a body like this one:
http://www.backyardstockphotos.com/image/caribbean-written-in-sand-girls-legs-sexy/ (http://www.backyardstockphotos.com/image/caribbean-written-in-sand-girls-legs-sexy/)

At the end of the day, editorial is the same as no model or property releases available and we need to clearly state Editorial use only: No model or property releases available at the start of our description.

One solution is to nest the categories.  On the categories screen you can set parent categories and on the menu screen you can nest the child categories by dragging them slightly to the right underneath the parent.  If you had Animals as a parent, and nested Farm Animals and Sea Animals under it you'd get a pop-out side menu for more options when you hover over Animals.

Getting the site up an running was a little bit intimidating but with all the great tips, hints and sharing here I finally have enough up and running and ready to share. Next steps are to set up Paypal and my EULA and get some of the other pages populated. My sincere thanks go out to everyone here, especially Leo, for all the generous help.

Here's the link to my site: http://www.karensarragaphotography.com/ (http://www.karensarragaphotography.com/)

I have a small portfolio so I'll only have about 275 photos live once I upload my current stuff but it will be slowly growing throughout the year.  Anyone that would like to link to me is welcome to do so.  I've set up my test network with the following sites:

CathysLife Stock Photos
Stockabily
PhotominingStock.com/Food
Asean Photo Stock

Since I have my complete portfolio available now (all keyworded, not all categorized however besides "all photos"), changes are high that I can provide search hits once you link to me.

Currently I linked to the following sites for testing purposes:

Hi

I came across some errors on the site. For example, look at Brands and Properties under Editorial and then go to page 2.

Or, go to Sights and Landmarks under Categories.

Thanks for including me in your partner network. I've now got 150 images online after my recent trip to the Washington DC cherry blossom festival!

What we need is a site  ( symbiostock.com  ::)  ) where we can list our sites and have our listings be searchable by Category ( food, travel,.... ).  This way we can do our own updates and changes instead of asking and relying on others.

that's what I've recommended earlier -- it would require a small db that lists what each site hosts, and then have symbio choose randomly from the sites available ( to keep the search time wuithin limits)  if Leo can provide the option to customize the network list, I can do the coding the produces the list
Title: Re: networking -- What are you looking for in a match?
Post by: Leo Blanchette on April 12, 2013, 21:40
Actually I had a similar thing in mind - but not a typical search.

Everyone (if they wish) will have a little apartment on Symbiostock.com - a sort of remote operations hub where they can manage their symbiostock main site presence, a nice write-up page, etc.

At this time I have in mind that everyone will submit up to 100 of their favorite images. The customer's first search result will give random related results. When user clicks on image, it becomes focus of next search initiated - with focus image large preview above -, and the new search is in cascading order of common tags shown below. Although first search is random, it should be easy to drill down to your desired image very quickly. Its not conventional search. Your image, with all of its data, acts as a giant contextual search tag.

Then customer gets to your symbiostock port page, which allows remote searching of your site. they can go there as soon as they wish, or back up to previous results.

Thats the nutshell version. And never expect testing will be free of bugs :D And don't expect it soon as long as I'm just one man.

Leo

How will you pay for the bandwidth and server space?

Long term this might be cool, but short term, to get things going, a simple db might be the best answer.

Mid term, a cool feature would be a way for our sites to query this data base and download changes to our own site... that way we always have the latest list.

at  the level of 20-100 users db usage would be negligible -- and it would allow any owner to keep their info up to date - could even let each owner select which suites they would like to network with -- this way everyone could see who's linking with whom

the search itself would just ask for 5 sites compatible with the current site - so just ne search and a table of urls returned, then the search performed as now

I've just realized, that networking may be very dangerous :)
Let's suppose, that in the future, hundreds (or thousands) of Symbiostockers decide to put the same site into their network. For that site it may quickly "eat" all server resources, resembling DoS attack :)

Ok, so Sean Lock or Yuri (thats it, right?) - not allowed to use Symbiostock. Problem solved.

:D

I could easily work in a two-way verification for connections. I'll keep that in mind.

Post by: Leo Blanchette on April 15, 2013, 16:23
Oh and there are two scenerios I know of where that would really become a problem:

1. Symbiostock is now a huge community and by some stupidity on my part that problem was not solved ahead of time

2. A search engine bot is crawling multiple site's archive pages, which all share a common network member, and that is causing a huge number of network requests due to the crawling speed.

Just an FYI though I have not put a lot of work into my site, clipartillustrations.com, but I am seeing traffic from the network, although search engines are not sending much yet. What that tells me: Networking is HUGELY beneficial after all. Big discovery in traffic generation.

Can you explain that? You mean there are more searches being done by your network connections than users? Either way thats good right?

Yes. Only few visitors searching on my site, but many network searches and of course it is very good :)

a DOS attack needs hundreds OF thousands or millions of hits, coordinated persistently over time -- a few thousand links that are occ'ly searched wont matter.  and a search bot, unless it spawns many others would also be only one instance

when running my online games i'd routinely have hundreds of users each day with no effects from the server -- each time a player did anything, their session would process a few of the tasks waiting for update, so there was never one massive update.  any given search on a database is also going to be efficient

one interesting test would be to time the search for a variety of keywords over the database of sites.  the problem with many many symbio sites is that users may not want to wait for the results, but doing 5 - 10 at a time and reporting the results isn't going to overload anything

...  the problem with many many symbio sites is that users may not want to wait for the results, but doing 5 - 10 at a time and reporting the results isn't going to overload anything

I'm designing in a few things to make it faster. One of the changes is that if the site does not respond within a certain (micro) timeframe, the page will load without it, then retrieve the results with an ajax-loading prompt much like you see when you click page results on network buddies remotely.

Please, i have a question:

- Network search only have results if my SY partner have a link back for my site?

ex: have a stompstock as part of my network, but stompstock doesn't have me as part of your network. So, if i search for "golf", which is a subject absent of my site but present in stompstock site, it will produce no results? To produce results, my site needs to be part of stompstock symbiostock network, right?

hitvectors (link) stompstock
stompstock (not link) hitvectors
NO RESULTS

hitvectors (link) stompstock
stompstock (link) hitvectors
RESULTS OK

No - the results from the network are independent of whether they have your site as one of the network links. Try searching for a keyword where there is a match on your site. It should all work

Not works. I put your site in my network and did a search for "animal" (2 results in my and 49 in your site), but only results of my site are showed.

By the way, SY network is "activate".

Are you entering the phrase in the search box - ie animals, not just looking for the category. By the way, I don't have any tags called "animals". I do have tags for "animal"

I probably should add that keyword to my cat pictures!!

steve

EDIT - sorry - I misread your post - you searched for animal, my mistake

Deactivate and reactivate theme and nothing. Put others SY sites to fill all 5 slots and nothing.

Did it. Not works.

Ok,IT WORKS!!!!  ;D

Let me explain problem...

Have 5 links

http://www.clipartillustration.com/ (http://www.clipartillustration.com/)
http://stompstock.com/ (http://stompstock.com/)
http://www.BackyardStockPhotos.com (http://www.BackyardStockPhotos.com)
http://www.theruchos.com (http://www.theruchos.com)
http://stockimages.kerioak.co (http://stockimages.kerioak.co)

With this configuration, not works.

So i read other message where Travelling-light send your new address http://images.travelling-light.net (http://images.travelling-light.net)

I swap http://www.clipartillustration.com/ (http://www.clipartillustration.com/) for http://images.travelling-light.net (http://images.travelling-light.net)

Search for "old" and finally WORKS.

Address  http://www.clipartillustration.com/ (http://www.clipartillustration.com/) it' not a SY site, so it's my fault. I guess.  ???

you need an "S"

www.clipartillustration (http://www.clipartillustration)S.com

Again, this stuff will eventually self-validate. For now it expects you to be perfect :D

unless you want to have a self contained little network, i'd suggest at this point  having only 2 or 3 mutual links, and the others independent - that way we're more likely to get results across the entire network

Sorry if it was dicussed before, but i realize that if i don't have any results for a search, let's say "people", the search ends with no results, even if my link partners having files with keyword "people".

In short terms, if my site doesn't have files for return, none file is showed. If yes, so my files and files of my partners are showed.

Looking to link with more artistic, travel and environmental photographers.

I have added the results to my network page at http://stockimages.kerioak.com/symbiostock-network-members/ (http://stockimages.kerioak.com/symbiostock-network-members/) - if I have missed anyone out or there are any errors I can change them.  The first figure in brackets is the number of links to others and the second is the links in - I make no guarantees that they are correct as we all keep changing things and I was working on phone and multiple bits of paper but they should more or less correct

great work -- this is the sort of info that can be collated automatically in the future for all sites that participate in the symbio network

Hi Cathy - Done.  You do realise it spoils the line of capital letters to start don't you  :)

I did a search on everyone's site.  Amazing what you will do while you are bored (and sitting around waiting with nothing else to do)
It might be a small niche but that should benefit you I would think as everyone will learn where to come

I have been thinking for a while for my links for
http://stockabily.com/ (http://stockabily.com/)
I have presently about 1250 pictures on line and 'm targeting 8000 or 10000 for the end of the year
I have for the time already two links for my network
http://cathyslifestockphotos.com/ (http://cathyslifestockphotos.com/)
http://stereoshutter.com (http://stereoshutter.com)

I read that the network will be extended from 5 to 10 which is a good idea. Which made me think it was soon time to extend and complete my slots!
For my networking I like to find more IF POSSIBLE with the following features:
1) Aiming at a size of 3000/ 4000 or more at the end of the year
2) Fair keyword & description of the pictures. I know that this is not my strong point, but I'm making a lot of efforts for my site that I have never made for MS (bulk keywording with collateral mistakes....).
3) Complementary or similar? well I still dont know; so I'm still opne on this point.
4) I think it is clear to everybody that network links are not for ever; we shall be able to experiment with new ones in the light of the results given.

Also I want to find somebody  (from my network or not) who will be interested in mutual sparing partnership in the comming weeks. Me testing his site, he/she testing mine. We should both accept that we have other activities beside this....so no stress....

Jeanclicclac I don't know if you want that, but maybe you can create a category named i.e. "all images" to browse your portfolio only by determined category.
The archive page show the first standard post of worpress delete it!

I am wondering if some similar and some totally different would work best, it is going to be interesting to see how it evolves.  I currently have around 600 online , it is taking time as I am trying to recheck keywords, do the seo and in a lot of cases re-edit as I am more skilled now with PS than I was a few years ago

Thanks Alberto (and Christine who helped to identify the archive page),
I dont see the advantages with a category all images; but I may overlook something?

I've added you to my network list & will be watching what appears from your site.  I've got about 900 images online now, probably aiming towards 5000

when first discussed, it seemed like complementary sites would work best, but I don't think that makes as much sense IF you're ex[pecting traffic to come to your site thru google  etc -- if they don't find what they want on your site, they'll want to see SIMILAR content from other sites

if, however, ypour site gets traffic independently of search engines, then a complementary network might make more sense

No, jeanclicclac I don't think you've overlooked something.
I'm used to tag as much as possible not to put hands a second time to things.
For example, in wordpress there are plugins to show on the home page sliders with images.
You can choose to show only images of one category or all categories if you set.
If you visit the site in my firm, you can see that something like all category in my shop is the digital download. In the future, in the megamenù under the shop i can put another cathegory named print (at the same level of digital downloads and extended license) where I can put the image avaiable only for print.
And so on, in the future I can create other root category in example for vector footage etc. This allow more order and coherence to the theme.
Note the frame below that without the parent category print and footage are less understandable.
So it's only a choice nothing to do, but is something that I do with in mind future develop.
Hope that is clear what I wrote....

I'm very much in two minds. Looking at latest 20 sales on DT, the search term which led to the sale is correct only about half the time, eg searched gas burner, bought butter, searched salmon, bought chicken, searched eggplant, bought mushrooms.

Maybe they had these things in mind for other searches, so having complementary links could work, and it helps to spread the knowledge of what is available on the network.

I know what you mean though Steve, very often when I search our site, nothing at all comes up in our links. I'd like to see those slots filled, but until more people join I guess they will remain empty.

Thanks for your explanations Alberto, it is still a bit confusing to me; but I have to think more about it!

One question is how to get more picture on a single page; just now it is 24; so when I have more than 24 in a category or in a search an need to click on next page to see the results. When having more than 100 this is not very adapted. Is there a way to set the number of pictures shown on a page?

How embarassing :-[: I just read Leo's post where he emphasizes how important it is to switch the permalink-setting from "default" to "post name".
I changed my settings some minutes ago. Could anybody please add my site http://www.flashstockphoto.com (http://www.flashstockphoto.com) to his network for testing. "Portrait" would be a good keyword  for a test search. Please tell me whether my images can be found by the network search and whether my logo is visible on the the left side of the search results.

thanks -- one of the annoying features of Office 365 is that it doesn't save individual worksheet sizing, so occl'lyu a column doesn't display, and when I copied the latest, I missed the first table column which started with <tr><td> resulting in everything on one line - and of course murphy was vigilant since I was on my way out  and didn't test this time!

Another annoying feature is that it doesn't bother with luxuries like </tr> and </td> tags, so you can't just copy the html and import it into TablePress...

Hi

Thanks to the help of many here, I have may website up and running, www.shaunwstock.com (http://www.shaunwstock.com)

670 pictures on line and 150 or so left to go, my port has a lot of Animals and Landscape pics, but a good mix of other stuff.

Any help or feedback appreciated :)

Thanks...works fine on my laptop, but didnt on my phone...i'll check with blue host?

Thanks this should be sorted now...I was redirecting from shaunwstock.com to shaunwstock.com/home...Ive got blue host to change my home page from the /home to just the .com to ensure no more occasional re-direct errors.

Thats for letting me know so I could fix it :)

i'm suspending the list of networked sites and using the symbiocards from here out

http://cascoly.com/symbio/testsymbio.asp (http://cascoly.com/symbio/testsymbio.asp)  shows examples of what will be displayed

send your cards to cascoly-images.com/pix and i'll update the db

other ideas for lists would be helpful -- eg, i'm going to have a link from the main listing to each site's categories and promoted words, since the listing of all categories from all sites is going to get big very fast

1st - which page was that?  I may not have a contact page set up for the v2

just realized it will be about as easy for me to use the current list to harvest the cards, so i'll get that done in the next few days and post the replacement.  then anyone not on the list can just let me know

next i'll be working on a wider variety of searches and tracking

it's actually a screenshot of an  interactive graph  -- this network is different from most others in that all sites are highly connected; usually there are hubs & clusters

i'll be creating further images as the network expands

I guess I'm ready for networking.

Picture Breeze - http://picbreeze.com (http://picbreeze.com)
(the domain picturebreeze.com is still hosted at a different provider and .htaccess redirected to picbreeze.com right now, but it will be moved soon).

What I'm looking for ...

I have to admit I'm not a fan of microstock (I'm a traditional stock contributor) but I think the concept of Symbiostock is brilliant nonetheless. So what I'm mostly looking for are the members offering unique and high quality photography who try to keep a certain price level.

What you can expect from me is mostly Texas/America related images, people, lifestyle, country and western and landscape. So far I've uploaded a little more than 200 of my early images in 2 days, about 1000 more current ones will follow within the next few days.

Cascoly - here's a little inspiration for you -

It turns out Symbiostock is already ready already to create complex graphs. Literally every site is capable of it.

Lets start building on this! I LOVE what you've done -

A little research turns up a tool called "gephi"

https://gephi.org/ (https://gephi.org/)

And it takes XML

http://gexf.net/format/ (http://gexf.net/format/)

Gonna put a few hours into this - I'll bet we could finally produce one of Symbiostock's most exciting features - network visualization. I'll send you some scripts ASAP so you can start playing :D

Oh yeah - and being the responsible person I am of course I'll be fixing a few bugs and addressing the priorities as well :D

actually, gephi is what I used to make the image I uploaded! it IS a cool app.  right now, I just create the tables of nodes and edges gephi needs when I show the networks connected list.  this was one of the apps we used in the social networking analysis online course I took earlier

I'm all over it! I'm going to make you a .gexf valid generator and spider quickly.

I quickly looked for some sort of flash exporter for generating web interface and I don't think one exists.

great -- there's no simple way to reproduce gephi -- the network needs to be tweaked for presentation, and there are many variables you can play with.  right now, we have a tightly linked web with no real clusters or hubs and every site is only about 2  hops from any other; as the # of sites increases we should see some clusters start to emerge -- eg, illustration vs photography

I just read the opening PDF and if I follow correctly we should be able to attribute all (meaningful) symbiocard data to each node, along with a weight attribute assigned to images, or perhaps incoming network connections? That at least should allow you to organize and manipulate the data however you wish after import.

I'll get a draft out to you quickly since your the network analysis king :D

You have categories and keywords slugs conflict - your Nature category has slug "nature", so keywords have "nature-2". The same for "business". Edit your category slugs to "nature-images", "business-images", then edit keywords slugs to "nature", "business" :)

Jean, upgrade your Symbiostock theme. You still have 2.4.1 with bug - only 24 images are visible to Steve's and my search engines. Then go to Symbiostock->Network and fill Site Name and Promoted Keywords. Then scroll down, check  Update public network info and  Update public image info and Save.
After that go to Users -> Your Profile, write your Biographical Info. Below is Symbiostock Profile and Personal Photo. You can submit fist your photo to Media->Add new, and after that copy and paste its address into that field.

I've added your portfolio to search engine. Several of your images are not visible, for example this:

My photo topics: Scandinavia, Stockholm, China, nature, wilderness, backgrounds, studio shots, flowers, office buildings, urban views... and many more.
what I am looking for: To skip the middle man and sell my photos directly, what else? I am with more than ten microstock agencies but want to try this network, it might be the future...
I have thousands of pics to upload, but want to try everithing out in a controlled manner first. It would be a good start if my site would show in the Network Directory.

Was just visiting your site! Great work!

Thanks Leo! Needless to say you have done a great job as well! This may be the beginning of something big... or not, at least it is exciting to be part of it.

Thanks having spoted this; I have regularely this happening during the upload phase, all data are there but no picture. I'll have to review the site to delete those empty pictures....

Update: funny I have just trashed the picture and suddenly it appears again but now with the picture visible.....

OK, no images up yet but the groundwork's done.

MSG: Imagenomad

Website: Stockphotology

URL: stockphotology.com

Me: Mostly wildlife and nature at the moment but a fairly mixed bag including some home studio stuff like food, tools, that sort of thing. I plan to drastically increase my medical image portfolio (drugs and equipment at first) and will be doing some lifestyle/kid shots soon (Yay for next door's cute kids). I aim to be up to 1000 images by the end of summer and will get my first two or three hundred images up just as soon as my breathless little broadband connection will allow. I intend to be a bit more liberal with my post-processing for Symbio (but not too much - I know the risks). I do like some vintage/pastel looks for stock images though.

You: Some overlap of subject matter would be good and if some of your images tend toward a slightly more "arty" style, I wouldn't object.

Exciting times. Thanks to all involved - this is going to be one hell of a ride.

Hello network people!

I just had to re-do Christos site since he needed some higher-power image processing to get his whole port up (I still have some things to add, but its functional).

I've re-updated, so please re-add him if you had dropped him due to the downtime:

Also I don't know if this is common knowledge, but it appears cartoonpictureshop is back up to date and ready for networking:

Are we coming up against some limits in the speed of Wordpress to handle really big sites? Or is the hosting slowing it down?

I was wondering the same. that site is really slow, slower then mine, but its the biggest symbio site to date. I hope its not because of the amount of images that its slowing down. I mean, every image is a page in WP. So thats over 11000 pages. Are WP sites built to manage so many pages?

Your site is running very slow, you may need to use WP Super Cache to speed it up.

Cool portfolio, very nice.

Cool portfolio, very nice.

This was a good opportunity to see how a HUGE port does in our suggested set-up.

To see how FAST search results are generated from a port containing this many images, go straight to the XML doc:

http://www.dashphoto.eu/?s=woman&post_type=image&symbiostock_network_search=true&page=5 (http://www.dashphoto.eu/?s=woman&post_type=image&symbiostock_network_search=true&page=5)

The slowness is the network connections which are really just slow on the FIRST load, after which ATJ's caching system has set up that particular search, and thereafter the page loads quite fast.

The only curveball his HUGE site sends to us is the writing of the image collection files, which AJT uses to populate his search engine. But that is ok, because the API (http://www.symbiostock.com/symbiostock-api-for-developers-and-marketing/) still gives you an efficient way of handling HUGE collections like this.

I'm glad this portfolio came along. It gave us the opportunity to see how the bigger portfolios will perform.

yes that will work -- but in this case you may have missed the subfolder '/stockphotography'

eg, http://cascoly-images.com (http://cascoly-images.com)  redirects to http://cascoly-images.com/pix (http://cascoly-images.com/pix) where you can find http://cascoly-images.com/pix/symbiocard.xml (http://cascoly-images.com/pix/symbiocard.xml) (or csv)  the xml is easier for people to read

the network list at http://symbiostock.cascoly.com (http://symbiostock.cascoly.com) or http://symbiostock.info/ (http://symbiostock.info/)   gives the full address you need

Is there any way to work around this issue? Moving my sites is not really an option, and I would rather not have yet another expense to deal with....

One thing I found helpful recently in looking for suitable matches for my site is the Symbiostock.info listing of current sites - if you click the number of images column, you get a nice random sample of images from the site - it may not show a complete sample of a large site, but it gives you a good feel for what you will find on the site.

on http://symbiostock.com (http://symbiostock.com) you can see each site's featured images, what keywords each site is promoting, who each site connects to, and which sites have the most connections; also lists of keywords and which sites have how many images for each keyword -- all can be helpful in choosing network connections

have you installed symbiostock?  right now you don't have a symbiocard.xml file -- did you update the network & images on the network page?  you need to do that even if you don't have the network activated.

but godaddy should allow networking;  alternatively justhost & bluehost are only $5 / mo for a site

Hello SymbioStock People!

Christopher Boswell here!

Love the site, idea, and functionality.

I've just taken the plunge and joined you, much work to do. It took some doing as it seems I'd rather lurk around in obscurity,

Ajotte instructed me to come in and say hello.

HELLO!

I'll be adding many images in the coming days/weeks.

Can I interest any of you in site promotion trading as suggested by your creator?

Thanks in advance, and good luck!

I am just calling it SYS because people were referring to stocksy as SY. I found that confusing in other threads. If I need to abbreviate it to SY I dont mind. Just let me know. I dont want to cause a division.

I'm still working on the site (and probably will never be done), but feel that it is at a point where I can start opening it up for others to critique.

I only have about 100 images up at this point, and should have about 500 images up within the next month or so, with a lot more to come in the future.

Hi zeamonkey,

I've read some times ago an old post about websense and their potentially damaging content

You can go on trendmicro site

http://global.sitesafety.trendmicro.com/result.php (http://global.sitesafety.trendmicro.com/result.php)

you need to submit your url and to make a reclassify request on "photo searches category".

It can help for websense categorizing.

I'd go with other illustrators too. With my site's keywords, food and vector images are the most likely to show up, on the image pages. Mostly, I'm looking for anyone where our sites would complement.

even if you're just starting to think about your network, it's worth adding other sites to start building cross traffic - you can always change them later

Great images! Excellent portrait of the gorilla. And love the macro of the dandelion. Nice work and welcome to Symbiostock!

I also like your watermark...you have solved the problem of it showing up on both light and dark photos. I have been having that problem and am going to change mine to accomplish what you have.

Wow, thank you all for the warm welcome.  I feel a bit intimidated looking at the quality of your portfolios but I am really looking forward to sharing the Symbiostock network with all of you.  I am pretty much a one-trick-pony in that I love to do landscapes/nature but I have no clue about how to do decent portraits, isolations, and other stock techniques.    I am more than ready to learn, however.  I already have been helped immensely by Martha who pointed me to this thread.

As for the watermark, the first one I made was white and I noticed immediately a problem with invisibility against light backgrounds so I just duplicated it, changed it to black, offset it slightly from the white logo, and finally combined the two layers.  Very easy to do in Photoshop, even if you are like me and know next to nothing about graphics, vectors, etc.

Cheers,
Dean

You have Nextgen plugin installed and it disables public image info, so your images won't be indexed in external search engines, like symbiostock.info or symbiostock-search.com. Maybe this problem will be solved in next Symbio versions, but now you have alternative: Nextgen or global search :)

Thanks, I had no idea.  I was just playing around with Nextgen but wasn't really using it so I have disabled it.  Is that all I need to do to get back on the global search?

I can't find your symbiocard -- have you activated the network and updated your public image files (from the symbiostock/network page)  or is your sym installed under the root?
Title: Re: networking -- What are you looking for in a match?
Post by: Jo Ann Snover on August 28, 2013, 10:19
I have tried to activate the network - and I tried again just now to see if I added some more info in the fields I have no idea about if it would work - but it fails (I think) with this message

Warning: Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in /home5/digitdt6/public_html/blog/wp-content/themes/symbiostock/inc/classes/network-manager/network-manager.php on line 1039
Network info updated.

Image info info updated.

There are a bunch of fields to fill in and although they supposedly have help, I get an "oops" page if I click on them. The getting started just says slick on activate and have the logos - I've done that but I still (a) don't get my logo on the image pages, just the SS ladybird logo, (b) get the above error each time I try to update the network info (which someone else said I should do to get my logo to work) and (c) you tell me I don't have a network card - which I don't know anything about creating or checking on.

Can you tell I am clueless? I'm trying, but it's not easy.

I had a wordpress installation already, not in the root (digitalbristles.com/blog) and so that's where my symbiostock install went. I seem to remember something I read when I first set wordpress up that said it was bad to put it in the root directory.

The "My site" field in the networking tab of Symbiostock correctly says "http://www.digitalbristles.com/blog"

I posted about the error message yesterday in one of the threads about 2.6.0 bugs but it may not be a bug - I'm probably doing something wrong or missing something. Is there anywhere that tells you what needs to be put into the various fields of the networking tab?

How does one get or make a symbiocard.csv (I see one mentioned in the site search on http://symbiostock.info/about/ (http://symbiostock.info/about/))

When I click that link it says page not found.  But when I click on your logo you show up under your main domain and not blog.  Set your site to http://www.digitalbristles.com/ (http://www.digitalbristles.com/) and try again.

Looks like it might be a possible bug in the new 2.6.x version.

When I click that link it says page not found.  But when I click on your logo you show up under your main domain and not blog.  Set your site to http://www.digitalbristles.com/ (http://www.digitalbristles.com/) and try again.

In the Settings-General for WordPress I have the site address as http://www.digitalbristles.com (http://www.digitalbristles.com) and the WordPress address as http://www.digitalbristles.com/blog. (http://www.digitalbristles.com/blog.) That's how you have your install of WP somewhere other than the root but have it behave as if it is in the root.

However in the Symbiostock network settings I can't type or paste into the field that says where my site is - it's apparently disallowed. Perhaps Leo needs to change which WordPress setting field he reads from?

My square logo URL is correct - I assume you can see this (I just copied and pasted from the Symbiostock field I entered)

http://www.digitalbristles.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/Square-Site-Logo-128-Square.jpg (http://www.digitalbristles.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/Square-Site-Logo-128-Square.jpg)

I'm still seeing the ladybug logo and not your square logo.

Okay that I don't know much about making it behave as if it were in your root folder and not in a separate one.  Now I feel like it is a bug like Shazam said.

Hi Jo Ann

Your site is showing up nicely under www.digitalbristles.com (http://www.digitalbristles.com)  not sure why you want it to show as www.digitalbristles.com/blog (http://www.digitalbristles.com/blog), or am I misunderstanding ?

To set your symbiocard (replace the ladybird logo)
go to
Users
Your Profile
scroll down to Symbiostock Profile and Extended Network Info
immediately underneath this is a box to add the URL to your Personal Photo - add the url then scroll down and click Save

Hopefully this should add the image to your Symbiocard/personal photo and replace the Ladybird logo

Thank you! I now have my logo in place of the ladybird (I had added the URL to the Symbiostock settings, not realizing there was a whole bunch of stuff way down in the user profile that I needed to add).

As far as the the directory issue, when I set up my site (pre-Symbiostock) I was following the advice here about installing WordPress in a subdirectory

http://wordpress.org/support/topic/should-i-install-in-root-directory-or-subdirectory (http://wordpress.org/support/topic/should-i-install-in-root-directory-or-subdirectory)

You just set your site address to the root (WordPress Settings/General) so although all the files live below, people access it as if it were in the root. I don't want the Symbiostock Networking to use the /blog subdirectory but that's what it has picked up from something internal to WordPress and I can't edit that field. I think Leo needs to pick the Site Address not the WordPress Address field when setting the networking info for my site.

After I entered info in the User Profile as you showed me how to, I no longer get the error when updating the network info. It'd be nice if it said "fill out your user profile" versus what it did, but I assume that was the source of the problem...

I don't know if I have a symbiocard - how could I find that out (cascoly said he couldn't find one)?

Problem with this site is that it was installed in /blog folder, but somewhere in wodpress config, site address was set to /. Now some functions use address with /, and others with /blog. Files symbiocard.csv and symbiostock_image_info.xml were generated and look ok, but they are located in /blog folder. I don't know what to do with it...

I can manually move them to the root if that helps. I know I'd have to do that each time I regenerated them, but would a manual move cause any other problems?

You can move them, but you should do it every time after any change, like new uploads, editing images etc, so this is no solution.

Your symbiocard is located here:
http://www.digitalbristles.com/blog/symbiocard.csv (http://www.digitalbristles.com/blog/symbiocard.csv)

You can find it by going to your author page (http://www.digitalbristles.com/author/joannadmin/ (http://www.digitalbristles.com/author/joannadmin/)), clicking on the Attributes & Symbiocard tab (to open it up), and then clicking at the bottom on "Get <author's> Symbiocard".

yes, I just everything at http://www.digitalbristles.com/blog (http://www.digitalbristles.com/blog)   - the 'network card' I was referring to is the symbiocard.csv or xml file which is at http://www.digitalbristles.com/blog/symbiocard.xml (http://www.digitalbristles.com/blog/symbiocard.xml)

there's still something strange though -- is your wordpress install also in the blog subfolder?  it should be

your site is now active at http://symbiostock-search.com (http://symbiostock-search.com)

Yes, my wordpress install is in the blog subfolder. Leo has the details of what's wrong - other than the card being in the blog subfolder, the URLs in the buyer login e-mail (and I assume all others) all have the wrong site URL (with the /blog at the end) so nothing they clicked on will work. He said he's looking through my site to see if he can figure out what needs to be done - either to Symbiostock or to me :)

thanks

I doing my best to get my hands on the network thing. I just added symbiostock.info as this seems sensible to me, not sure if I did this correct.
Only 90 images uploaded just now but slowly but sure more will be added.

Happy to be with the team!

I do 3d as well and was thinking about the 3d files in the future for sale.  Only thing I can think of is making them available as zip files but not sure how we could show off extra views of the model or a 360 turn table unless we put them on YouTube or something.

I suppose it can be done with a zip file, not sure though.
To show off the file you could make an animation and images and add it to the 3D file page via "add media".

so
http://www.food.ezeepics.com/symbiocard.xml (http://www.food.ezeepics.com/symbiocard.xml)

The limit seems to be 10 links with the standard version. I'm not sure if the premium version allows for more.  Searches will also return results from the 20 promoted keyword you enter in your profile too so is you have food as one of your site keywords you would appear on the search results of another site even if you are not one of their links when the word Food was searched.

I have the premium version and there are not any more blanks available to add more people. In another thread (don't remember which one) here: http://www.microstockgroup.com/symbiostock-technical-support/adding-more-than-10-people-to-network/ (http://www.microstockgroup.com/symbiostock-technical-support/adding-more-than-10-people-to-network/)
a couple of people did add more than 10, but those additional adds would disappear and appear. Right now, my own site doesnt appear in the slot where it used to. Leo said there is a fix coming for that.

My conclusion...I wouldnt add more than 10 right now and AFAIK that isnt included in the Premium package.
