Sorry been finishing up some custom jobs and sometimes forget what questions were asked.

I had meant to answer yesterday.

Um...

1. On my computer, i open up a photo, work on it, then save it with the name "horses-trotting-stock-photo.jpg.

So in essence..

horses-trotting-stock-photo.jpg has no effect on any names at all. During the processing a preview is created using the title from IPTC data, and the main downloadable file name is replaced with an image number.

So like you say in #2 (unless I've missed something in my own coding) http://www.cathyslifestockphotos.com/horses-trotting is named so because possibly your IPTC title has the name horses-trotting, and that is what is being retrieved during the processing. If IPTC data is empty, it would be called something generic like "royalty free stock image" or something. The filename (not iptc, but the filename...) is really irrelevant since it gets scrapped.

The IPTC data as you probably know is what you change when you alter your jpg image to contain keywords, description, and title.

But just to reiterate if you were save as draft and change the slug to horses-trotting-stock-photo,  then that would work out fine.

I see that you sort of answered this in another thread. I say sort of because I already know that the append to title adds words in title but not permalink. You haven't explained why words are being taken away from the permalink (file name that I gave it). I'm going to keep harping on this until you answer me.  ;D

The filename that you gave it disappears as soon as you upload and process the file to be replaced by a number. The permalink is nothing to do with the filename, it uses the slug, which is a simplified version of the post title, read from the IPTC data initially. The display image which you can see in the media library has a filename made up from the image number and the slug, giving it a unique filename containing your important keywords. The original image is stored in the secure folder as $imagenumber.jpg

Yeah what he said.

No problem Leo, you aren't even supposed to be here!  :) Thank you both for the explanation. It makes sense now, but one more question:

I do save as draft. Can you tell me specifically where that is on the page? Do you mean the very first line on the page that is editable (what I would call the title?). The next thing that can be changed is the permalink but even if I change that to add -stock-photo.jpg it does not save it. It reverts back to what it was.

I see nothing else on the page that says slug or looks like a slug.  :(

The slug is the little slimy wormlike creature crawling around the edit area somewhere. Generally doesn't come out unless it rains. Do not pour salt on it.

Wait...let me get a screenshot...

Here is our elusive and strange little creature called the "slug" who's natural habitat is just below the title area and just above the edit area. Its the last part of your permalink: http://www.symbiostock.com/free-files/2013-04-10_1356.swf
