First: The Symbiostock still works, but setting up all properly and tweaking template is a LOT of pain in the a**. Especially new plugins and Wordpress version might make some problems and you have to know exactly how it will go on your hosting - there are some tricky settings which are not always available.

Second: To succeed, I hardly recommend creating also blog with stories, tutorials, extra showcase etc. NO eshop or commerce site is able to compete against content rich blog and NO SEO features will overcome this. I do websites for over 15 years and simply put - you have to get backlinks, you have to create and periodically improve text content (not just few sentences or keywords) and you have to build serious social presence. Otherwise there is no reason in building your own website. This takes a LOT of time and effort - especially if you are not well known person or do not have any background in internet marketing. It is easy to overcome agencies SEO because agencies rely 90 % on pure brute force advertising and PR.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I think you meant "strongly recommend". "Hardly recommend" can be interpreted as do not recommend. Your second point matches my own experiences. I agree on point one as well but I don't think any self hosted site is plug and play. Just about every self hosted site will need a decent amount of attention.

I haven't touched my Symbiostock shop in forever.  I just have it hanging off of my site, no link to it or anything.  Someone just found it, managed to create an account and download an image, lol.  $25.  http://www.seanlockephotography.com/shop/image/student-cute-hispanic-boy/

I have just about lost my earlier enthusiasm for Symbiostock, and now moved on to PVS (photoVideoStore), https://wordpress.org/plugins/photo-video-store/. By far the best and most feature-rich Wordpress plugin I have seen in our niche.

Can you show us a link to your Symbiostock site? I sort of wonder if you are here to promote an alternative wordpress plugin?

I dont think he has/had a SYM site. I think its as you say. He dredged up another SYM thread to post about the plug-in. And look at his tagline. Digital Products Mastermind Group ::)

For what it's worth, I'm not sure what Mark's affiliation is with this plugin, (I've seen him pop up talking about it a few times in the past week so I get the suspicion,) but the CMS Account solution has been around for a quite a while.

I experimented with them as well as Ktools (same era in the late 00's / early 2010's) before getting heavily involved with Symbistock for a while.  CMS Account support was without question more helpful and responsive vs Ktools in my experience and I think Ktools went out of business shortly after. As far as SEO they were okay but not fabulous when I tried them out vs a regular WordPress eCommerce site.  They all have their pros and cons for sure as self hosted solutions.

I think anyone who goes down that road ends up looking for someone who can relate to the trials and tribulations of building something like that so maybe that's all Mark is interested in?

Currently I'm rebuilding using Wordpress with a standard e-commerce plugin and some custom development of my own and hoping to get some better results.

I'm always open to chatting with anyone trying to do something similar and can even sometimes be helpful as my background (besides stock illustration,) is in web development & marketing :)

Symbiostock was a fabulous & ambitious concept but I think as a community we were and are a little too scattered still to make it work.  Maybe some day, fingers crossed!

Good luck to anyone trying to build your own site though, I think personal branding and niche work really is the answer!

Yes, I had a ktools site, then a SYM site as well. Both great ideas, but as with any kind of personal site, it all comes down to marketing and getting customers. I can see it maybe working for niche portfolios. For microstock in general, cant see it.
