I just received a promotional email from Kelby Media promoting free vector downloads from graphicstock.com. The email directs me here:
https://www.graphicstock.com/freeimages/landing1.php

They only advertise 250,000 images and you can only get up to 140 for free. But still it raises all kinds of questions for me.

Comments ... ?

I'm still not sure what to make of that place. They operate very differently than other typical microstock companies. Instead of selling images and paying royalties, they buy rights to portfolios and pay a flat fee up-front, no royalties afterwards. I've heard you can get a decent payout for giving them the rights to sell your work, but I'm still not sure about it. You'd be essentially competing with yourself.

As for the free promos, they've been doing that for a while now. I guess to drum up interest and get some rapid sign-ups. They can afford to give stuff away because they're not paying royalties on any of it. But it is one hell of a bet on future success, paying out tons of money to buy rights to images and then giving them away in the short-term while hoping for long-term success and eventually paying off those purchases and getting out of the red.

I just got curious about GS...

Interesting, their Royalty Free license has two short  paragraphs explaining what is allowed and limitations....Well, short compared to the other micros....It seems like a great deal for a buyer in need of extended licenses and don't want to worry about keeping track of print runs, and other things, so on....I couldn't find mention of sensitive uses...or mention about using on Print on demand sites..and such...I wonder if POD use  is allowed....

But from a buyer's perspective, well,  the price for one month membership seems to be lower than an extended in other places...so thats a deal.

I don't know if you have portfolio there and on other sites,  for a contributor, it could mean competing with yourself.
