They are absolutely NOT claiming that what they are doing is new. But their combination of fluid hard and software has been a game changer many times. there were tablets long before apple, but it was the ipad that made them popular, there were mp3 players before the ipod, but the itunes store together with the ipod changed the way people bought music.

Now apple is hoping that together with with the apple payment system, the credit card will be replaced and it looks like the credit card companies hope that apple will bring more secure mobile payments etc...

Nobody has to buy apple, I think especially for geeks it is not always the right company. But for the normal user, that just wants to use technology without having to understand it in detail, they love apple very much.

And of course there already are many smartwatches. But how many have become mainstream and as popular as the ipod?

I find it redundant, since it only works with an iPhone. So now you need to carry/wear two devices? Meh.

Thats's what they call innovation in appleland :)

Oh goodie, it's turning into a Mac versus PC war.

Let's go back to Nikon vs Canon war. Or mirrorless vs dslr. That's probably more relevant to this forum.

I find the design truly beautiful. Very sleek and modern. I would wear even if it's not apple watch. I'm certainly getting this next year.

I think Apple should start designing jewelry. Just put your logo on a bracelet and Apple fans will claim it revolutionary. Apple should be fashion company.

Apple should be fashion company.

They've recently hired senior execs from Burberry and YSL.

It is a fashion company, has been for almost a decade. That's what we were talking about with buddies, that these iphones are basically jewellery substitutes for women.

No Apple versus PC war. Just pure criticism on Apple :D
I am a Mac user since 1998. My first OS was OS7. I was with apple during all those years, had Powerbooks, G4s, G5s, MacPros , Macbook, ibooks etc. For me, Apple started to get uninteresting with the iphone. I use macs for working. I like MacOSX. I do not give a s**t about iOS or the millions of guys who thinks having a apple device is cool. I prefer having a Terminal on my machine and as much ram as I can. Apple continiously ignores professional needs and thus those people who stood with Apple during the tough times. Last year I had no other option than switching to various other machines. My workstation now is a Hackintosh. Apple had no professional workstation to offer which was relevant. Most machines of the keyworders/uploaders are now on Ubunutu. Apple failed to provide a reliable WiFi network technology. Broken FTP pipes all the time, Wifi disconnects  on 10.8...etc. This is a real problem if you send out 80GB every day.

Why should I care now about a watch?

it's their Apple Mac moment all over again, 30 years after 1984. On this one, I'll be happy to buy from Apple again. Anyone else?

I think that was when they first released iphone..

since then, they were a bit late for pretty much everything..

I've been going in the opposite direction. Four years ago I needed a new laptop and, at the time, hadn't experienced modern Apple products. I therefore couldn't understand why the Apple equivalent cost 3x more than the apparently equivalent Toshiba. So I bought the Toshiba. Three years later, one change of motherboard and endless waiting for 'lock-up' events to finish, the Toshiba lies idle as worthless junk. I bought a Macbook Pro instead and just wish I'd bought it the first time around. I now understand why it costs 3x more. Because it is 10x better.

I also bought two non-Apple MP3 players (believing the reviews on Amazon). They proved to a waste of money too which again I only realised after I eventually stumped up for an iPod. I'd have saved myself a lot of money, a lot of time and a lot of frustration if I'd have gone Apple from the start.

I still have a PC running XP. I use it only for processing images just because I'm used to my workflow with PS CS (2003) which obviously wouldn't work on an Apple machine. If and when it dies I'm very unlikely to replace it with another Windows-based product.

I don't particularly like Apple being so dominant (and expensive) in their field but their products are a joy to use and they make my life easier. I love making a change  to my diary or contacts on one device and, almost miraculously, the change seamlessly appears on my Macbook, iPad and iPhone. What's not to like?

Same here really liked the option to gave folders different colors but I switched to Windows many years ago and never looked back. IMHO Windows and Apples OS are basically the same nowadays.

I was an Apple hater. I got my Macbook Pro 3 years ago that changed everything. My first 2 smartphones were Samsung. I switched to iPhone 5  and wonder why I bothered with Android phones. I'm an iConvert.

I'm also an Apple user, and hated using a clunky PC so much at my last job that I carried my Air to work with me every day.

I'm just underwhelmed by the watch (though I think the watch face design is cute). And the fist-pumping and screaming from the audience was kinda creepy.

Like many others, I gave up wearing a watch years ago, since I carry an iPhone.

That's where I was headed, not all the rest of it, but who wears a watch to tell time anymore? So i or Android who wants some Dick Tracy wrist thing, that needs charging daily, strapped on their arm? It's more trendy and fashion and not really functional or practical at this point.

To Mac folks in general, not specifically you... I'm a PC user and happy. There are all kinds of people in the world and we all don't have the same computer, car, pets, clothes, or shoes. The only thing that ever got me about the iNzi's was they are like the one true religion and can't seem to understand, everyone isn't a blind follower of their computer iReligion. LOL Don't come Bible thumping on my doorstep on Saturday morning, telling me about the rapture or signs from the heavens and don't keep telling me how "My Mac is better!" Thank You

And there Ain't No Easter Bunny!  ;)

OMG!!!!!!!

A WATCH!!!!!!

What a friggin brilliant genius of an idea!!!!!!!

Man having to look all the way down my arm at my phone is finally over !!!!!!

Like whoda ever thunk of such an ingenious idea!!!!!!!

Like now all I need to do is look at my wrist!!!!!

Late night comedy had a blast with that one last night as if this was the first ever made anywhere in the entire universe, a never before heard of concept or idea that only Apple could dream up!!!!!

It's more trendy and fashion and not really functional or practical at this point.

Apart from everything else, it's a health and fitness monitor. In that respect it's a sensor which can then be linked to apps running on our computers (for most people their iPhone is increasingly going to be their personal computer). So it has potential immediate utility with respect to many people's sport/fitness/exercise routines - many of which will already today involve iPhone apps.

I would also expect to see the data it provides being made optionally available over time to our healthcare providers - and, perhaps more importantly, our insurance companies. I think we can look toward a day when the amount of data we provide affects the cost of our premiums.

(And if you step out of line or think something negative it will know - and it will zap you).

;D Oh Oh, I think I'm stepping, good thing I don't have a watch that monitors my chocolate or whiskey intake! Maybe the Singapore style rice noodles with curry will cancel out some of the Scotch?

Do I want to be monitored by someone else? I know, I don't care about cameras, traffic or street or stores. NSA and FBI can read my mail, I don't mind, but would I willingly give an insurance company my data, so they could potentially raise my rates?

What next, grocery store link to what we buy, reported via the phone, so they can track out eating habits? I'm not in favor. How about a car monitor that watches my driving habits and they raise my rates based on that. Seems nothing ever lowers rates, does it?

"★ The best Health & Fitness app on Mobile Premier Awards 2011 according to jury of industry experts ★

Instant Heart Rate is the most accurate Heart Rate Monitor app for any smartphone and it does not need any external hardware.

Use it for optimizing your exercise and to track your progress.
Install it now and keep fit.

Accuracy is constantly tested by fitness coaches, nurses, doctors, EMTs and 5 million users like you."

Android - 2011 - what can I say. It's already been done for three years before the big "i" got it.

Doesn't need two devices to make it happen. However I heard a rumor that i was going to invent the wheel in 2010...  ;)

I think that this sort of health stat monitoring (including what we eat and drink) will become normal. Not just via Apple. Most people will ask why they should pay the same for their insurance as someone who is, say,  overweight, drinks too much, smokes or never takes exercise. I am not advocating this - but I think it will arrive gradually, inevitably. My guess is that it will typically be a scheme which you can join - which the insurance company will offer in return for lower rates.

What next, grocery store link to what we buy, reported via the phone, so they can track out eating habits? I'm not in favor. How about a car monitor that watches my driving habits and they raise my rates based on that.

Anyone who uses a store card, plastic or shops online is already contributing their buying habits to the data which is known about them and which is available to buy. Unless you constantly use cash that data can probably already provide good information about what you are eating. Cash is gradually being phased out.

In many countries your car insurance rates will already be based on your driving history. Data from the car is an inevitable next step.

(That heart rate app you referenced works by you putting your finger on the camera. It's different from something which monitors and records your heart beat.)

The lines of geeks outside Apple stores in their Minecraft and Star Wars tee shirts who will die on the spot if they fail to get their hands on the thing right now, this very minute, always make for a good editorial photo op.

No disagreement bunhill, and if I had the money I'd be editing on a desktop iMac.

Stores and tracking (how did we get there from heart rate monitor?)  ;)

It was reported that Angry Birds and Brightest Flashlight, both install tracking software that monitors your travel. And it's in the license for the FREE app. I'm sure there are others.

I don't know why a store would have to disclose that they were receiving radio waves. Nice gesture, but anything we broadcast is open to being analyzed. There are laws now and the conversations are scrambled, but the fact that your phone is pinging out for a tower, is hardly secret.
