Such idiotic statements I just can't believe it! Because of you I'm on Russian side now!

What??? How???

That's just about as idiotic a statement as the original one that launched this thread!

Take your idiotic/hate posts somewhere else. Thank you.

I hope stock agencies will do action. Russian photographers should be banned.

Russia will be excluded from SWIFT system, they will no longer receive money over IBAN. It is NOT hate, it is correct action against Russia.

Yes, it's a correct action for one or more governments to take against the official Russian state ruled by a mad and frightfully dangerous dictator.

It is not a correct action to take against ordinary Russian photographers who are just trying to make a living the same way everybody else here is.

It's disgusting to support Russians. Yes, you are home, safe, while Ukrainian people are dying. A "collective responsibility" is unknown term?!

One is not "supporting Russians" simply because one doesn't want to see ordinary Russian people punished for something they had nothing to do with.

And where any one of us happens to live, whether safe or not, has nothing to do with it either.

What about those Russians risking their lives protesting in Russia against the invasion? Should we punish them too?

Exactly!

And there might even be a courageous stock photographer or two in those crowds of protestors, all willing to risk their lives and freedom to speak truth to power. Someone is taking photos of the demonstrations, after all, and making them available world wide.

But whether they're in the crowd or not, people just like us do not deserve to have their livelihoods stripped away just because Putin is a callous, cruel madman.

Thank you, DO, for writing exactly what I was thinking.

And thank both of you, Wilm and Everest, for your clear-eyed, non-hateful expressions.

Wilm, I happen to be a white woman with centuries-deep roots in the American South. But I never was a slaveholder. In fact, during America's unfortunate period of slavery, people just like me had only a few more rights than the enslaved blacks did.

I see this as a close parallel to what you said so very well.

As has been mentioned in other threads, the hands of GB are far from unsullied.

I use the term 'GB' hesitantly, as we are a collection of countries, with differing histories.

However, 'we' have been involved in many wars and invasions abroad, leaving chaos in our wake.

We also have a horrible history of empire building and enslavement.

My personal point of view is that the last really justified war/conflict we have been involved in was World War II.

This is because we were fighting a charismatic despot committing genocide.

Who knows what the future holds for Putin, but from more 'recent' European history, there is a salutary lesson from Romania, in the name of Ceausescu:

The reality is, they won't be able to receive any money anyway, all the payment systems to Russia have been shut down.

It has nothing to do with hating Russians, it is just another way to make them inderstand that the Russian people need to do something about the mafia organisation that is running their country.

People are dying, Putin is talking about nuking the world, he is as mad as a box of frogs and this needs to be bought home on all fronts to the Russian people.

Sorry, this is wrong, Putin is just the headman with his finger on the button, there are many others, pressure can only be exerted collectively.

Putin is holding NATO back and keep Russians safe. Just keep calm, take a breath and learn something new, ok?

Sometimes the opposite of what one wanted to achieve happens.

In 2017, there was a survey in Finland about NATO. Only 17% were in favor of NATO membership. Between February 23 and 25, 2022, there was another poll. Now 53% are in favor of membership in the NATO.

I can imagine that such a shift would also be seen in other countries if a survey were to be launched there.

Aha! Another Eastern European who can't stand a woman who has a brain and speaks her mind.

Yep, looks like we have another sexist in our midst. Sweet Zero has a buddy online, it seems. (The only one he has, unfortunately.)

No big surprise there.

Indeed.
For the first time that Switzerland has given up its neutrality.
I agreed with America that Europe put relatively little money into their defense (after the Cold War, the point was no longer seen).
Today, all parties wanted to increase the Dutch defense budget. It is unique that they agree. Just like in countries like Germany by the way.
At last a united cooperation in Europe. It remains a pity that the problems with regard to climate change have to be pushed back.

The Russian photographers are Putins victims.

His deranged speech last Monday changed everything. Then he invaded Ukraine and threatened to nuke all of Europe and even attack the USA.

He wrote his last ticket and is so out of control that horrible measures are being implemented.

But there is simply no way the threatened countries can ignore Putin. Without the invasionI doubt we would have seen such a revival of both NATO and the EU.

Our Russian friends are NOT taking part in the war against Ukraine.

On the contrary, I am sure many of them are privately trying to help friends and family in Ukraine, are taking part in protests against the war at great personal risk.

They are taking pictures and videos and sending them out into the world, to show that Russians have a heart and are not Putins killer robots.

Some of them might even try to organize real political protest and intense action against Putin, they might be putting their life on the line to help get rid of him.

And on social media, in public, many will be completely silent.

Because they and their families might be arrested if they speak out.

But this does not mean they approve the invasion.

So please show some compassion to all victims of Putin, the people in Ukraine and the population of Russia who are living under the boot of a crazy and vain tyrant.

yes, in post-WWII America, protesting foreign policy has only minor consequences (tear gas arrests, etc),  i'm proud to have been active in organizing against the Vietnam war, but I was never in real danger; as compared with lynching, bombings & murders of civil rights activists and those brave enough to stand against authoritarian regimes in Russia, China, Myanmar et al

Exactly. I took part in a protest today and also documented it with photos and videos for agencies.

But I can sleep safely in my bed every night and dont have to be scared that the secret police will drag me out at 3 AM.

I can send my content wherever I want and post it on my website with my nae everywhere and do not have to fear that my family will be in trouble.

In China they arrested a man who simply stood in silence.

In Russia people are being arrested for walking around with flowers in yellow and blue, nothing else, just holding flowers.

In Palestine artists are arrested for painting pictures of watermelons or anything that is in the colors of the Palestinian flag. Children are shot at for holding a flag.

In Hong Kong the yellow umbrella gets you into trouble.

Little ordinary things, that ruling tyrants suppress because they cannot handle anything that shows the population does not accept how they lord over them.

Thank you, Thijs. This is the reality.
America should stop being the world police, and Europe should assume more responsibilities in relation to its own safety.
Thanks for clarifying. This is important coming from you, especially since some unprepared folks felt offended when I said it!

Europe needs a standing, well equipped, European army.

It is not right to keep calling Uncle Sam to solve our local problems.

Why should young American soldiers die for us??

Europe is no longer in ruins, our countries are modern, our economies successful.

Germany made a historic u turn this week. I dont know if people abroad understand how extremely difficult it is for Germans to embrace anything to do with the military.

Don't mention it.
More because the world was getting more and more restless (not so much because of a Russian threat, we didn't expect that). And indeed we cannot all continue to rely on America. Not fair and also because trust in America had dropped considerably under a certain former president. It is of course true that a very large part of the money that the Netherlands spends on defense goes to America through the purchase of combat aircraft.  ;D
The Netherlands will have to build the boats itself.
But it's sad that it's necessary. While we are actually doing everything we can to avoid further damaging the climate. Maybe it goes together a bit because it is even more important to look for other energy sources in order to stop being dependent on countries like Russia.

Well, I am not so sure if I like Germany getting all militarised again. We had a rule before that they wouldn't but that was let go some while back. But then they said they wouldn't do it anymore and stand back anyway. We have let it happen twice in the pretty recent history, I really hope we are not going to witness a third time, now that they are starting it up again. Time will tell. I don't trust recividists. You can make one misstake but if you do it again there is something structurally wrong.

I would like to express a few thoughts. In doing so, I would like to try to put myself in the minds of everyone involved.

NATO has made many mistakes. And I can understand to a certain extent that Russia feels backed into a corner. The West must work on itself! A policy that works on de-escalation would be very important.

But I'm not sure that the NATO issue is really what Putin is most concerned about. No one can see inside him.

As I said, NATO is not faultless. But Ukraine has given up all nuclear weapons in exchange for treaty assurances of state sovereignty and integrity.

Today Ukraine is a country without nuclear weapons - as agreed. But already in 2014 the integrity was violated by annexing Crimea. And after that, other territories.

What I can't understand - maybe because I lack some background knowledge and some emotional and cultural roots:

Russia has "only" 144 million inhabitants and gigantic amounts of mineral resources and raw materials. It is one of the most resource-rich countries on earth - with a rather small population compared to other resource-rich countries. Nevertheless, a large part of the Russian population does not exactly live in prosperity. Many are poor.

Why is it not possible to make 144 million people content and happy with these immense mineral resources? Why do people want to return to the "old greatness" and put world peace at risk? And risk that an endless number of states will turn against Russia? That precisely those that are not doing well economically will have even more problems? That there will be domestic unrest? Without economic necessity!

I do not understand it!

You are right, Wilm, with a small comment.
Putin is only using NATO's expansion as a "casus belli", to justify his Greater Russia ambitions, fueled by Russian irredentism.

It was not NATO expanding. It was the free democratic will of many countries who suffered under the Russian boot, deciding and voting to join an alliance able to guarantee their integrity. Putin believes that he is entitled to dictate, what sovereign countries should do, while his propaganda is blaming NATO for the expansion.
NATO forced no country to join.
