On the wordpress bog the bloggers are all thrilled about this. To their credit a great many are saying they have avoided using pics off the net for fear of violating copyright and now they feel safe to use the Getty files. I tried to post a question asking how they would feel if WP created a tool that would let other bloggers embed their entire post in another blog with only attribution for compensation. It didn't get past the moderators so I guess they only want woo-yays there

Under-promise and over-deliver... prepare everyone for 2-3 hours downtime and back up an accessible in under 90 minutes.

So if I'm reading it correctly, iStock excluded the Vetta images from the new subs program... so they could be given away for free over at GettyImages. That follows the typical logic we see over there.
What happens to the embedded image when a contributor leaves Getty and the image is disabled? Does the blogger end up with a big blank panel or will Getty have something else the drop in there, perhaps an ad for Getty? (or maybe they found a new use for the glitch monster - wonder if he will show up on blogs across the web when their site goes down)

No need to disable images or leave the site, doesn't matter when they aren't available to the buyers anyway.

Spike, it's not that people can't or won't think about it, it's that they don't consider it a "fun" topic to be discussed for entertainment.
It's like saying "just for fun, let's talk about what you would do if you home burned down" no one wants to chit chat about that for entertainment but it doesn't mean they don't have insurance, thought out safety strategies like window decals to alert rescuers of pets inside, exit ladders from second floors, alarm systems, etc.
You probably would have gotten a better response if you'd posed the question with concern instead of trivializing it Consider the difference between asking "are you concerned you daughter might be killed in a school shooting" and "just for fun, let's talk about what you'd do if you daughter was killed in a school shooting"

From the letter from iS... There was minimal impact with September partner program sales (royalty loaded in October) and a significant impact for October partner program sales (royalties loaded in November) when this issue was identified. This statement is contrary to what I saw in my PP numbers which makes me wonder about the reliability. My October deposit was 2.5 times my highest monthly PP earnings and 4 times my average PP earnings. My November deposit was insignificant, in fact, it was on par with my low average amount. My clawback is about 35% of the high October amount

Good one Shelma. So you disagree with the statement that the more links a site has, the more seo advantages? And do you disagree with the statement that the more people recruited, the more links that means for those people? In a way, seo is pretty much a ponzi scheme (if thats what you say is a ponzi scheme). The games that have to be played to get any traction with seo is kind of a game.
I think it's well understood that more links are good but what I don't understand is the perception that anyone did something underhanded or fraudulent in creating additional avenues to create links. They had the initiative and coding skills to create master search engines, analyze and share data reports, etc. Good for them they put effort into alternate means to drive traffic to their sites. I certainly don't fault them for it or think they somehow stabbed me in the back. In fact, I appreciated those efforts. As for the links included in the theme, which were explains as a thank you to some involved in early development, there was always the option to turn them off. I guess I'm just perplexed as to what part of this was unfair or a scheme to benefit some and deprive others when everyone has the same options they could pursue.

I find the ribbons on the eggs to be distracting too. The eggs are not hanging so the ribbons are not necessary. Real dyed eggs would be stronger, along with spring flowers as already mentioned IMO.

It's far from dead. If you read Leo's post here you'll see that he said he'll be back after he recovers from a year of financial breakdown and stress and that he'll correct issues that occur with Wordpress Updates. He seems to be backing off to attend to personal needs and since the site is stable and sustainable on it's own he's not actively responding to every wish and whim that were becoming overwhelming.

The original post with the list of sites dates back to November and I don't think it's a dynamic list that is being maintained. Your best bet for a dynamic list of sites that shows active sites is the list at www.symbiostock.info

I got the news letter too (you had to resubscribe recently). It sounds like he is taking I hiatus to earn some money and he also mentioned that he has been hired to develop the VAT plugin so I am guessing once developed someone will be offering that for sale. Probably a better route to go rather than the continuous improvements that we all request. I hope Dennis can chime in with some clarification.
I am sorry to see the .org site disappear so suddenly. We were starting to get some momentum on the Twitter experiment and lost access to the list not to mention other resources

What a difference a year makes. I found this response to Luis on a thread from just a year ago. I guess Shotshop doesn't have any qualms about displaying "the same images like the subscription stocks" anymore considering their alliance with DP. Hi Luis Santos,
thanks for your interest contributing images at shotshop.com. please let me explain that we are mainly focussed on the german speaking markets with more selected images and even higher prices than the usual microstocks. It doens't make sense for us to display the same images like the subscription stocks. I am sorry and hope for your understanding.
good luck and best regards Stephan Krmer

It's a federal holiday here in the U.S. on Monday and some offices are closed too. Not sure about BS but it could delay results further too. I hope they get it resolved for you soon.

Hi all, I looked into Dollar Photo Club. It is an affiliate site that is using the Fotolia api program. The database on Fotolia is mirrored on this site as it is on many other partner sites. The difference is that Dollar Photo Club isnt available to everyone. It is an exclusive club (not exclusive content) that is going to be made available to heavy buyers. The sales from Dollar Photo Club take place through Fotolia (as do all api sales) so your commission remains the same. It is essentially a giant subscription. You will receive the same subscription commission you would if the image were purchased directly from a Fotolia member with a subscription. This is another way to drive traffic to your portfolios and should result in an increase in overall sales for each of us.
All the best,
Mat Hayward
Wow - I never knew I was a heavy buyer of images at FT. How did that slip past me? I received my invitation this week to join the dollar club as an exclusive member. Funny thing is, I've never bought a single image from FT - contributor only.

Wow - first time back to the forum for a while and I see this!!
I've been a happy Symbio photography user from the beginning. I've sold:
3 @ $20 6 @ $3 2 @ $1
Did I make a profit taking hosting into account - no. Am I happy with progress on sales - could be better. Will I stick with it as I add the rest of my portfolio - hell, yes.
Steve
Thanks for sharing Steve. If you haven't already added your stats to the poll over at Symbiostock.org please consider doing so. The poll is ongoing and allows changes so you can revise your vote if subsequent sales have moved you up a level.

I guess they must have redundant servers and something is down somewhere but not all of them and it depends how you are routed. I tried typing your site into the "is it me..." Site and got results saying it was down but then went directly there and successfully navigated to several pages and executed searches.
Did you try posting on there Facebook page? I think they were communicating via FBI last time they had issues. Maybe you can reach them that way.

Could it be something with an international connection or something on your end that's not connecting? I can get into your site via the link in your signature and by typing it in. I can also get into both Symbiostock sites -.com and .org

Someone just sent me a note saying that they could not get into my site but when I went to confirm that it was down it was back up again. I can see your site too Ron.
Didn't they have issues right after some server work several months ago and then things were running smooth for awhile? I'm wondering because I had received an e-mail from them about doing some server work last week and now they are having problems again it seems.

I can understand the viewpoint of the school and the burden it places on students but aren't Adobe programs still used by a number of potential employers out there? I can't help but wonder if it will hurt the student's chances of getting hired if they graduate in 4 years and don't have knowledge of Adobe tools more recent than CS6 era products. I know if I was a student I would want to learn how to use the latest Adobe products as well as others to have on my resume.
That's why you pay your tuition. So, you can have nice computer labs to work in and relevant software to learn.
Yes, but I understood them to say they are not updating the computer labs past CS6 so incoming students who are graduating in 4 years will only learn features on 4 year old Adobe software along with whatever new software they decide to promote. If the general industry moves away from Adobe over that time it's less of an issue, but I would not want to pay tuition and not learn current software that is commonly used in the industry. I see it as a disadvantage if they are not current with the tools in CC 4 years from now.

I'm still building my Symbiostock site (currently 1,610 images and growing) and am very proud of it.
How are sales ?
Not great for me. But others are doing quite well.
The last time I read through the forums on this I had the impression that the people getting sales tended to be illustrators with already established private sites who had switched to this platform. That was a while ago. Are photographers doing well with this now too ?
(edited to fix quoting error - I had put my response inside Bunhill's comment instead of following) I wouldn't say I'm doing "quite well" but I did have my first sale last month - a single image for $20, better than EL's on some of the sites listed to the right and I don't even have 300 images on SY yet. It appears they found me from Google search. That single sale was more than my BME on 8 of the sites I'm on. I was already paying for hosting for another project so my only expense was the domain name. I'm in this for the long haul and will be putting more effort into my SEO efforts and adding to my portfolio this year.

Good luck with the mission Ron and kudos for offering up the explanation and apologies. I do hope you've planned out a Before and After series complete with shots showing the baggy clothing for your portfolio!

I've been crazy busy with non-stock commitments for the last few weeks, and haven't checked in here much. I have obviously missed a lot
Leo, firstly a thank-you for the huge effort you have put into this project. My site isn't developed yet - I got as far as buying my domain a few weeks back, and installing the themes, etc. but now need to actually personalise and populate the site. This project has given me the opportunity to not only have my own website, (as that could be done through various means), but to get some traffic from the networking side and some support from a community willing to assist, and to be part of a worthy and commendable project.
I take it that it is still worth me proceeding with developing my site? I haven't anything to give in return for technical support but, hopefully, another site can mean more traffic and sales for others? This is all very daunting for a complete novice!!
I sincerely hope that the community rallies round in all ways possible to keep this project alive and kicking. I don't know what I can do but I'm willing to muck in if asked
Happy to have you. With Symbiostock:
Don't panic, and never forget your towel.
See yall.
Thanks!
Not sure what the towel reference is but I will try not to panic
The "towel" reference is Leo's sometimes unique sense of humor again. It' a reference to something from "Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy". It's said to be the most important thing an intergalactic hitchhiker can have with them for a number of reasons. Wikipedia will enlighten you more is you care enough to search.
