I think it's quite curious that people are using this situation as proof for their 'pro macrostock' campaign and 'booo microstock'. What I find interesting is that it was the traditional stock company Getty who gave away all the images to Google to be given away for free and the traditional stock company again, who terminated a photographers contract with very little reasoning.
Personally, I think the whole argument of trad. stock vs microstock is ridiculous. There is only 'stock'. But if there has been any questionable actions as of late, they seem to be put in place by the trad. stock companies.

I posted the survey on the iStock forum and there is no reason to believe that only people looking elsewhere would answer. iStock exclusives should be just as interested in the results as anyone else as it shows how they stack up against their piers.
Did you post how exclusives stack up against independents anywhere, I didn't see it.
in terms of what? There is a numbers count but earnings or other comparisons aren't there. This is just the bare minimum in information from the survey. The full data is coming next week and more comparison / breaking down of the data throughout the year.
Ok that's what I was wondering, if we could directly compare average earnings. You say that will be released next week though?
Average earnings for exclusives vs. avg earnings for non-exclusives won't be posted next week. Just the raw data from the questions will be posted next week. In terms of earnings that will be everyone's average earnings, the median, lowest and highest.

- have employees or work as a team? what means yes?
Either one. The question on the survey was "do you have employees or work as part of a team". In other words, you aren't a one man show.

Thanks for the thoughts everyone. Looks like logo 1 wins unanimously.

Even after everything at IS, I'm surprised the 50/50 exclusive migration is so high for people leaving.
Yeah, that is quite high - a lot of people were seeing decreasing royalties though and perhaps it was enough to make them look for greener pastures. The stat that isn't listed in this infographic though is the number of people who actually did change exclusive status. That will be interesting to look at. It will also be interesting to see how many people planned to changed exclusivity in the 2011 survey and how many people actually did change status as indicated by the 2012 survey.
I wouldn't read too much into it. Those who are dedicated to staying exclusive (at least for the time being) have not much reason to look outside the iStock forums for information, and no need to take part in industry surveys. So the people who decide to take part in something like this is a self-selected group of people who are already at a stage to look outside the iStock world. Overall it's just about 170 iStock exclusives who took part in the survey.

I have a simple little directory site for wedding photographers in Norway and I'm having a logo made. I can't for the life of me decide which is better. Logo 1 or 2. The site/logo should appeal to brides, but also to the photographers who will have their businesses listed on the site. site: http://www.bryllupsfotograf.no

Thanks for the great information James. It is super to have information from the source.
I agree, therefore is it possible to have the newbie link removed in this case?
done. I have James an imaginary 25 posts to his credit so his links are now live

Wow, thank you so much, anonymous donor. I never win anything... this prize will at least give me a little something back as I continue to use my own time deactivating more photos.
How about this? I'd like to pay half of it ($50) forward. I can't hog all of it to myself. Let's say 2nd place get's $30, and 3rd place gets $20.
Tyler - please go ahead and randomly generate some numbers from the tally thread, and post the results here. Let's make a few more hard working microstockers have a slightly better day as well.
sure.. I've drawn 2 more numbers from mr. wolfram and MichaelJphoto and MicrostockExp get the $30 / $20 split
Thanks for the email's guys. The money is now transferred to you.

News: I just phoned Mostphotos, who explained that the newspaper is invoiced and that the sale will occur in my statistics when first the invoice is paid.
They also promised to take look on the MR problem (which they irresponsibly leave to the end-user to settle with the content owner) and they promised to rethink and eventually insert a phrase about demeaning usage of RF pictures.
So of the problem is solved. Mostphotos is not fiddeling with sales, they just work an oldfashioned manual procedure.
Thanks for the update and following through with this

Alright Congratulations guys!
Thanks again to Mr. Wolfram - we very much appreciate your kind gesture. Also thank you Tyler for helping out with this, much appreciated as well.
Mr. Wolfram ( http://www.wolframalpha.com/) just gave me the random numbers.. it was someone else who is giving the funds

Wow. This is really shocking. I really can't believe iStock would close Sean's account. He has loads of great images, is active on their forums, helps people out and gives good critique of the site. And by critique I mean helps them spot things that need to be fixed or things that are unclear. If anyone has held a professional attitude in this whole ordeal it would be him. That is the type of member a site should be eager to have.
I am really blind to what iStock (or Getty rather) feel they are gaining by removing Sean's port. If they say it is 'purely business' they must feel they are better off without his images or his presence on iStock. I just don't see it that way... quite the opposite actually.

I had an odd request the other day from someone wanting to give a surprise gift of support to someone who is deactivating some of their files from iStock. Here is the initial message I've been reading the threads about the Getty/iStock/Google debacle, though I haven't posted, since I deleted my entire (small) iStock port when they lowered commissions over a year ago.
Many horrible, unfair practices throughout history have ended, but first some effective people had to decide that it was worth fighting, with more than words, against it.
And, building on that, I'd like to do a little more than just say supportive things to MSG'ers who de-activate files on February 2.
But, because of obvious privacy issues, I can only think of way that involves you. So, if you find this idea workable, please drop me a line. If you have tweaks that make it workable, please don't hesitate to tell me.
1. I'd send you $100 gift certificate (something widely used, and ideally that could be emailed - such as Amazon.com email gift certificate, or, if such a thing exists, a PayPal email gift certificate...)
2. After Feb. 2, you'd randomly select name of one Premium member (or any full member, if you prefer) of MSG who posted here that s/he de-activated at least 100 files on February 2, and ask that person if s/he'd like the $100 gf. If not, you'd pick someone else....
It would be my way of saying thank you for someone doing something concrete to help stock photographers, and really photographers in general. I don't have preference one way or other if my name is ever mentioned - that's up to you. After a little back and forth and trying to find something fair without having to pick someone directly I (we) decided to pick someone at random who had deactivated at least 100 images. I looked at the number of posts in this thread and got a random number using wolfram alfa between 1 and 436 (The result was 371). Then, I went to post 371 and if necessary I was going to scroll down until I found someone who had deactivated 100 images. I didn't need to .. ArenaCreative had deactivated 200 images. I've send him an email. Thanks mystery person.

Ok, well, we are no longer discussing Stocksy here.. just hashing back and forth between various things unrelated to the topic so I'll lock this thread.

I see no point in carrying on the argument, we have all made our respective points clear, maybe we can all move on.
Agreed, thank you

I know this question has come up before but I've never been able to quite get my head around how to proceed. I live in Australia. I'm a hobbyist who makes a loss on my photography and my turnover is less than $20,000. The Australian Tax Office doesn't want me claiming my hobby losses against my main income so at the moment I don't declare my stock income/losses and everyone's happy.
I'm currently an istock exclusive and they don't issue any forms, don't withhold any tax, and all is simple. However if I go indie I need to deal with SS (and others). They withhold 30% and issue forms and put me in a position I don't want (or need to be in) - dealing with tax as a business when I the ATO would rather I don't. The advice I've seen involves sending my passport off to the US or something and I really don't want to do that.
Are there any Australians here who have found a sensible solution to this state of affairs?
Really does Australia not have a tax agreement with the US to put you in the 0% bracket?
