Looks pretty, but why bother :)

« on: September 06, 2007, 23:45 »
Don't bother it won't do a thing. I tried this a month ago with a few of my images and none of them are still coming up via their search when I look for any of the new top seven keywords.

Just tried uploading again and got this message this time around

"Upload Stopped
Sorry to inform that uploads will be temporarily stopped for 2 hours to facilitate an urgent upgrade of our storage system."

Sounds to me like 123RF have run out of disk space and are in the process of adding another hard drive atm :)

General - Top Sites / Re: August 2007 earnings breakdown
« on: August 31, 2007, 17:57 »

Summary:

Another good month with a BME. The biggest performer for me in July were 123RF moving from 0% to 5% and StockExpert, going to 4% after only two weeks of having my images and my folio accepted, and in terms of percentage of income (took me 3 months to get accepted by StockXpert).

Fotolia had a very slow start but did pick up in the last week of the month a bit, saving it some grace, while still not as good as July, in fact the only of my sites not to have a BME but not really surprising as most of images still don't come up via their search, despite playing with keyword orders (first 7) etc.

Dreamstime came in rock solid at 7%, same as previous month with ShutterStock dropping in terms of overall income from 71% to 66%. I'm rather happy with this as I didn't feel comfortable having such a high percentage of income with any one agency.

Overall a very solid month, with an overall performance that exceeded my expectations, given what I've heard about August and the US/Europe summer holidays. I've had my first EL on ShutterStock and best day there with 51 d/l while also having best days at iStock, Dreamstime, 123rf and StockExpert. Finally I've been shooting quite a lot and looking forward to September now.

Final Verdict:

Total BME: 44%
Total EL: 1 (ShutterStock)
New Images: 294

(Albumo, BigStock, Crestock, Canstock, Future Pics, Lucky Oliver, SnapVillage not tracked by percentage of sales)

Terrible review times but great sales :)

Very true and a good read. Anything is possible if you put your mind to it and indeed there are photographers out there, making a decent living out of microstock, you just need to want it badly enough :)

Dreamstime.com / Re: Saturation......??
« on: August 29, 2007, 20:48 »
For me it started slowly but now is still going to end up with a BME of 20-25% without a huge increase in new images there for this month.

Adobe Stock / Re: Strange happenings at Fotolia
« on: August 29, 2007, 20:43 »
I realize that, BUT, once the images are in, changing the order doesn't do anything, not atm it doesn't anyway, rendering this useless for any images already in the database.

I go to my profile on FT - http://www.fotolia.com/search.php?order_by=3&p=86536

I search for Canberra (of which I have a largest collection off on FT), nothing, I search for earth (which are my best selling images on SS), I get 1 out of around 50 images, of a pretty bad shot of the earth globe I put there ages ago.  I broaden the search and put in girl (I have a lot of images with girls, children playing), nothing.

I put in women (also of which I have many shots of, nothing).

So is it fixed ? am I happy, heck no and no. Will I delete my images and folio from FT ? don't see the point as it might improve ohh I don't know, around the year 2020 if we're lucky.

Seriously I don't really mind as my images are taking off everywhere else, so not big deal and I'm a pretty easy going person :)

.25 cents might seem little (also there is a pay rise once you hit $500 to .30 cents) however to let you decide if its worth it I hit $500 in under 3 months with around 400 images and when I stopped being exclusive with Fotolia, at the time, my percentage of income with FT was 100%. However pretty much of the mark Shutterstock became 84% of my total income while Fotolia was at 10%. (thats with over 900 images at FT and only 80 with SS). For August SS is at 69% while FT at 5%, while the rest are the remaining agencies with iStock being the strongest growth agency in the past two months, accounting for 12% of my total microstock income. So is .25 little, yes, but is it worth it ? heck yeah :)

Thank you on your advices! What about Stockxpert?

Took me three months to get accepted, total pain in the arse... however well worth it now :)

We've all been down that road Lincoln, keep at it :)

StockExpert took me three months to get in as they give you a month cooling off period between each application, but well worth it now as they have the highest return per image and sales looking promising.

iStock is also definitely worth it as is any other big 6 with the exception of Bigstock in my experience anyway.

Heck yes! You should always add all your new images to all the agencies where you get regular sales, ShutterStock included. I didn't mean to quit SS or stop uploading, that would be just be plain crazy :) I only meant that if an individual doesn't think they can add around 40-50 new images there every month, they shouldn't feel disappointed by lower growth there as opposed to sites like iStock or StockExpert where the dynamics of how and why new images are sold are different.

a.k.a.-tom

Right you are, nothing wrong with a bit of sentimentality. I think this place and talkmicro forums operate on self perpetuating basis. That is people that came here needing help once upon a time are so grateful that they in return offer help, truth and honesty to others. Be nice if the rest of the world worked like that :)

Before when I was also exclusive at Fotolia, microstock never seemed more then like being a fun little hobby. Since I ventured to greener pastures it started to actually look like something that I could do full time and get an ok income from... Sure some sites like iStock can be a pain to get accepted but persevere, it will be well worth the effort.

Just had a look at your folio on FT and be prepared to be amazed when you take my advice :)

Also ShutterStock is the best place to start - http://submit.shutterstock.com/?ref=93425 (my referral link as I think you'll do quite nicely there)

Just take exclusive off all your best images on FT and use those on the other sites and make sure that all new images from now on, you only make non-exclusive on FT so that you can also upload elsewhere. I did this about four months ago myself and haven't looked back since. To be honest Fotolia is a bit of a joke sales wise compared to the three sites I mentioned.  And that's not even talking about StockExpert and 123RF both which will be guaranteed to outsell FT on any given month. If Fotolia fixed their search and overall speed it might be different but not many people around here take it all that seriously...

Cheers, fixed now. Also what I meant is that with SS there are no restrictions to how much you upload so in effect you should have a lot larger folio there then say iStock where you are limited to 25 images per week. Also to grow with SS you need constant uploads with the new images always selling quite well off the mark, while with iStock images take a bit of time to mature before they bring in good sale figures. If you just want to focus on small folio and can't shoot/upload at least 50 new images per month then don't count on SS to give you big growth or income but rather concentrate on iStock, Dreamstime and StockExpert.

How about signing up with ShutterStock, iStock, Dreamstime to begin with and then see the difference. Fotolia just isn't all that crash hot for sales to be honest.

That's a nice trip. You should also consider going to Adelaide via the Princess Highway so you could do some shots of the 12 apostles, early morning would be best.  Might do that myself soon :)

As to Canberra its all cool as far as property releases go, don't need any around here. And thanks for the info, good to know when to expect things to pick up. Not that August isn't my BME, just feels like it's been slower then prior months...
