It sounds like "buckle up"...
Or "brace for impact..."?  :-\

Oh yeah! Another royalty cut on its way! Just what we needed!
Tu quoque, Achille, fili mi?  :P
No seriously, he was just asking for some feedback. Did FT ask feedback before they did it? Did iStock asked feedback before they "mirrored" our content into the garbage bin? DT has a history of listening so they'll listen.

400 billion years and we tiny humans have managed to screw up the whole planet.
The current universe is about 12-14 billions old, our planet a bit more than 4 billion. Either you got confused by the subscription model or you count at least 20 pulsating (big bang, expansion, contraction, big bang...) universes in a row. Whatever, it's time to hit the sack  ;D
@Velo: thanks for the astonishing movie.

I didn't submit them yet to any stock agency, so I don't know yet. What do you think?
First of all, this work is fantastic! I think it's too good for any microstock agency that prefers short clips as raw material. Why don't you offer this ready-made work to media or travel promo agencies?

If the smaller plans will be permanently removed and based on the results we will receive during this time interval, we plan to adjust the remaining subscriptions. They will be aligned to the current market conditions.
In microstock lingo, adjust/aligned means "decreased" and "joining the race to the bottom".
Many designers have criticised the level-based system that deducts several downloads of their daily quota.
So the guy whining here in another thread about the level system with subs got wat he wanted.

It seems to be a gentle warning that the level system will be phased out gradually (for the subs, later the credits?) and that the subs will earn less. Is stinkstock hurting that much?

Basically the level system is unsustainable since the longer a (good) image is online on DT, the fairer the change it will achieve a higher level. Probably the proportion level > 2 images on DT is rising all the time, considering the asymptotic upload rate has been broken. Perhaps the buyers should be confronted with the truth that a Mercedes costs more than a VW Polo but as long as the Mercedes factories decide to put their content on every new site that pops up for the price of a VW Polo, it will grow more and more into a buyer's market. Anybody shooting in his neigbor's feet should realize that his neighbor will also shoot in his feet and that they both will end up with feet in fragments and less revenue. End of rant. :-\

I yielded to Lisas Theorem : don't leave money on the table (since tomorrow might never come).
I uploaded 10 but after a while I got error 500 on their server. I hope they won't be like Veer that can't handle slow uploads from poor people in the third world.  :o

Maybe I wasn't clear at the beginning but it wasn't the RAW originals to get lost, it's been the jpg's with all the processing work on them. If it were the RAW files, that would have been a catastrophe!
Yes in that case they were on your HD physically. An accidental "move" is the most plausible hypothesis then.

but I am (still) waiting for a proper upload method since I've got no time to upload 20 pictures at a time to a new site
Still 10 times less than on Veer where the FTP always disconnects and that doesn't accept IPTC properly (they are married to Adobe's private scheme and ignore the base IPTC scheme). Browser upload only works with 1 file at a time. At least iRockstock works like a charm even on a jungle-wifi with antenna.

I behaved once.  A long time ago.  Didn't like it.  Never did it again.   ;D
Well to get back on topic, I had one sale today (wherever your day is) on the Rock thing. A Christmas-related studio shot and I got two whole dollars for it. Let's enjoy it while it lasts, till the Yuris, Lisas, Elenas, Pressmasters etc.. jump on board and the roof falls in  ;)

This might be a weird idea, but did you ever see (included thumbs generation) the images on your PC with the cam disconnected? You might not have hard-copied the files but just the shortcuts to the cam files. In that case, just reconnect your cam (hopefully with the memory card not yet formatted) and your folder might magically reappear.

I had exactly the same scenario once with a stand-alone USB disk.

Thank You, Halfshag.
Being slightly aware of the meaning of "shag" in the U.K., does "halfshag" stand for a sortof coitus interruptus?  ;D Just curious.

Can anyone give me the list of subjects what (according to you/someone) SS still welcomes or subjects which are frequently rejected by them...?
Well this topic was about DT, but I guess it goes for all microstock agencies. Sunsets, waterfalls, travel and landscapes are still accepted, but they have to be stunning and postcard-like, the thing that you would put up as a poster on the wall.

I think Drupal would be a perfect solution for this photographic product.
It is not.
It will definitely reduce the maintenance cost of your website.
Drupal is the prime choice for developers of non-photography websites. For the photographer not wanting or able to spend time on web-development, CMSaccount and Ktools are the prime choice.
If you are  not comfortable with Drupal, you can come to us.
Sure honey, I knew you were into charity.

Software - General / Re: Copy - Paste IPTC software?
« on: November 13, 2011, 14:38 »
I don't that with Exifer.
The last time I checked (years ago), Exifer wasn't developed any more. I used it a couple of times and once it corrupted all my images. Perhaps there is a newer version?
Irfanview is developed constantly and it never corrupted my images. The workflow is quite fast in the Thumbs view (press 'T' when you open any image).

You can CTRL- or SHIFT-click image thumbs like in the Windows Explorer in a very intuitive way to make a (multi-) selection. Then menu : File | JPG Lossless Operations | Set IPTC data to selected files (CTRL-I)
A popup-window will open with then with the tabbed IPTC info. These contain the master data. You can fill in here all possible IPTC fields. In the last tab - and this is very important - you can determine how the master data are applied to the selection : all fields are copied into the selection, only filled-in fields are copied (empty fields are not touched), or only empty fields in the selection (slave data) are filled.

The pop-up window with master data is pre-filled with the IPTC data of the first image. This can be inconvenient when the master data are in an image somewhere in the middle of the selection. In that case a make a temporary copy of the master image called "a.jpg" so it is always in front. A second drawback is that IPTC data are only copied into the JPG, not into the TIF. This can be a handicap for people that shoot only raw without a corresponding JPG.

Lightroom can do this but I don't like Lightroom for editing since it can't clone nor selectively erase - and it's not free. To pay for the possibility to put IPTC in TIFs is somewhat overkill for me. Irfanview never let me down for many years, it's constantly developed, it's free and it works fastest for me. But others might have other equally fast solutions.

A typical application is right after the shoot when I fill in date/location/model code/copyright in all the images of the folder (shoot).

Is somebody using or know of any software that can copy-paste title, description and keywords from an image to another or even to multiple images ?
Irfanview in the Thumbs view.

Thanks for the heart, Maria. By the way, you can read this story backwards and then it's about stock photography. When the acorns are finally just 1 cent, we arrived in the microstock stage and the world is full of acorns.

Off Topic / A story about acorns
« on: November 12, 2011, 06:18 »
This is a story about acorns. Once upon a time in Middle-Western Europe a man passed by a village that had its village green bordered with many tall oaks. Needing many acorns for his business, the man saw an opportunity and spread the news around that he would buy all available acorns for 1 euro per kg. A fair price and after a day he left, his two carriages filled up with acorns and the villagers with a decent amount of cash.

The next week he was back, now offering 2 euros per kg. Of course, the easy to find acorns were already gone, so the villagers and their kids went all around the village green to dig out more acorns. Sure enough, the man left the next morning with one full carriage and the  lucky villagers with plenty of more cash.

Ten days later the man returned again, spreading the news he was out of acorns and was willing to pay 5 euro per kg this time. The villagers, hearing this, stopped working on their fields and the kids staid out of school just to rush around for more hard to find acorns. After a hard day roaming around in the woods, they returned with a few bags of acorns and were elated to receive a 5 euro bill for every kg. Not even half a carriage but the price made up for it.

As they expected the man to be back soon with even a better offer, the villagers stopped working and schooling altogether and tried to hoard as much acorns as they could in advance. Of course those were almost all gone. The most clever ones walked to neighboring villages where they bought all the acorns they could get for 5 euro, but that weren't that many since apparently our acorn-buying man had passed there too.

Greedy and desperate, the villagers now started buying and selling acorns amongst themselves and prices went up a lot. No work was done any more except searching for acorns in all possible forgotten places and the school had to close down. They expected the man to be back 10 days later with an offer of 10 euro per kg or more as apparently, he badly needed more and more acorns all the time.

But just two days later another man happened to pass by the village. He had four carriages full of acorns with him and announced he would sell all those for 15 euro per kg if there were any buyers. If not, he would go to the next village.
The news spread like a wildfire and soon enough the villagers turned up with heaps of cash as they had withdrawn all their savings, pawned their wives' jewelry and their house. No way they would let go a lifetime opportunity like that, and after just two hours the four carriages were totally sold out.

Needles to say that the first man came never back. It might come as a surprise but this story is also not about acorns. It's about the stock exchange, the banks and Wall Street. Just think how you all have been fooled, peasants  ;D

Thank you for your attention.  :P
