DepositPhotos / Re: Depositphotos hits 5 million mark
« on: December 05, 2011, 09:45 »
I really dont know any Yaroslav in our company, otherwise I would have passed your regards on ;).
Great!
I have already explained that the communcation in the beginning was not how it should have been. We had a lot to learn back then and we have and now I am here to handle questions and queries in a polite, honest and direct manner.
Yes everybody has to learn. So wonderful. I admire how those tracks were covered and I honestly think our (well not mine) photos are in good hands. So I wish you the best of luck in Fort Lauderdale  ;)

But again, please dont get the impression that I am here to push people into joining our site. I just want to inform and discuss.

That is so wonderful so could you discuss perhaps the allegations that your Ft. Lauderdale operation is just a mailbox cover for a Cyprus based group owning Depositfiles as one the leading providers of illegal content?  :P
How will you counter Rapidphotos and Megauploadphotos for instance or weren't they so clever?
My regards to Yaroslav and I understand you will have to ignore "From this moment all paranoid requests will be ignored by us."

Just a thought of course and no pun intended - as always. After all, the Sopranos had a very legit waste management business. I'm quite sure you're not allowed to elaborate on the origin of your capital as this seems to be private, and who cares.  ::)

Like with an ex-lover, with the love the hate should go away too. It's over. I don't like to bash them since they're not my business any more.
I can just hope that after their financiers sold them off, they regain their senses again and become the community site they once were.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Is December usually a slow month?
« on: December 05, 2011, 00:42 »
December is usually very slow for me, the worst month of the year.  I don't have many Christmas photos.
I don't think that Xmas shopping brochures, calendars, cards and sites are designed in December. The few Xmas things I have sell latest in November.

80
Update : batch uploaded 17 Nov has mostly 0 views and  about 1/3 has 2 views.
One from 2005 has 2500 views but no sales. I made the mistake to put "teen" in the title. Sigh. I should delete that old crap done with a 3MP P&S.

General Stock Discussion / Re: IPTC Spellchecker
« on: December 04, 2011, 07:50 »
Thank you for the link, but it seems like it just a normal spellchecker, importing text from your clipboard. This I can do much faster though PhotoShop and MS Word without going online. Or am I missing something this site is capable of?
Well there is duplicate removal, sorting, and that's it. I have a more advanced version that also does what Leaf's script does and is also database oriented (predefined sets public and private) but that's not ready yet. Yes you will have to go by the clipboard, just like in Word.

Off Topic / Re: The media can manipulate your perception
« on: December 03, 2011, 21:32 »
As Race says, a reputable news agency would not crop a photo in a way that changes it's meaning.
Cropping is obvious, but what about those millions of potential photos that aren't shot at all. I can go out this morning and shoot happy people in a full church or just the dementing lady in front (with the church in the bokeh) that is turning around in the dust since months. What to shoot will ultimately depend on my estimation of saleability and impact. Yet both realities are true.

84
What am I missing here? This post doesn't really seem like a question nor does it make a point. Sounds more like something from Jack Handy's Deep Thoughts.
It feels like the pickup line of a Jehovah witness. So Sir, you think all this beauty came along just by itself? Don't you think this is the Work of a creative Intelligence? Definitely of course now can I enjoy my Sunday?  ;)

Envato / Re: Photodune, Thoughts?
« on: December 03, 2011, 08:51 »
I think Photodune is great!! :)
I beg to differ. I had 1/3 rejected because of no model release. And yes I put those in the releases folder. Now they want me to go file by file and click 1000 times to edit/reupload the release on every image. They don't even have batch.

Apart from that, their reviewers seem to be ignorant in the microstock field since they rejected many good sellers elsewhere with a very generic comment. Is it framing, noise, or "standards"? No explanation.

They got the top contributors (no not you Luis) in probably with some assistance as to releases. Now the regulars join, we have to bear with their unpreparedness as to microstock, especially release libraries. I'll just wait for a while uploading and see what they come up with but I won't hold my breath. If they only carry the top image factories and ignore the humble ants at the bottom, a vested microstock site is still much better for a buyer.

86
What exactly is "nature photography" as far as you are concerned?
In my experiences, stuff that doesn't sell. Unless you're in real estate of course.

87
Do share your thoughts about this...! :)
No. Your grace period is over. You have been milking this forum for several days, and basically we all are competitors. Many posters were very good-hearted to share their best advice, but you keep asking and asking and asking. You will need to do your own research from now on, as you can read more and more from the reluctant responses. I have been too good too to share some advice, also in private. To no avail. Once again do your own research and be happy.

Yes, reading of EXIF data is not yet available. Once it becomes available we will send you a notification.

(1) Reading of IPTC (both base scheme and Adobe) is vital. (2) Also a model release library is vital. (3) Contacting Lee Torrens and buying his business guidelines for beginning stock sites is vital.

(3) Contact http://www.microstockdiaries.com/

(2) I have a full model/propery release module with user/admin interface needing 1 DB table but I can't put the demo in public since the test data are real models.

(1) Use this code: (I put it in public since all the OS forums are unaware of IPTC for microstock, it's all about galleries)
@Leaf: I hope it's OK to litter the forum with some code.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Embarrassing Error Page
« on: November 30, 2011, 20:28 »
Pretty serious since here it's 9:20am (Tokyo, Tawain and Singapore time). Most offices start at 8am. It's the first day of the month and Thursday. Some projects might be on deadlines since the end of the year is near.
I don't know if they have many Japanese customers but those won't be happy at all with this history of failures in our prime time.

Envato / Re: Uploading via FTP
« on: November 30, 2011, 07:25 »
I got the same problem. They just rejected a full batch of about 60-70 in which very good sellers on DT (level 4), FT, 123RF. Reason: no model release and I'm sure I've put the release in the right folder. Fine for me but I won't reupload them until they have a proper release library. You're just working in the dark there. Is it attached or not? No acknowledgment whatsoever. I can't resend 70 images on a 50kB (max) wifi, that batch took a full day. Releases are a total mess on PD.

You can't even reupload and let it go for a night. They want you to "resubmit", then "edit" the image and attach a release to each and every one of the batch which involves several clicks per image and 70+ times uploading the same release  :-\

It's so dumb since I have a spreadsheet with all image file names and associated releases, as Lee Torrens told to do for new sites. They just ignored that and apparently went into stock prematurely, not even reading Lee's reports.

You mean unless one object is not self made it can not be submitted as RF.
Not really, it should be a commercial object and it should be recognizable as unique work, like the doll. Plates, spoons, forks, gavels, most clothes are also made by others, but considered generic enough to pass. Cars and cruiseships on the other hand are not so generic unless you crop a detail out. It's a thin line but experience will tell.
So according to you all the smiley objects without people are either self made or are posted before yahoo came to exist that sometime before 2000 or 2001 ?
No idea but the smiley is very recognizable and used all over the web, also Yahoo. You can't pass it as original work anyways, not even if you change some small details. It doesn't matter since obviously it's a commercial object so see below.
And how can one say that its not made in my own factory (as there is no visible logo on it)
In that case you'll have to try to convince the reviewer that the doll is made indeed in your factory and upload a property release for it, stating that you as the owner of the company owns the design.
Imagine this : the doll is sold as commercial RF and used by a competitor of the actual doll designer/factory that made it. He could sue the agency's ass off. That's why agencies try to stay on the safe side.
Lol this is IMHO really not a valid points.
They are for the reviewer since your images were rejected.

93
The doll is of course copyrighted since you didn't design/make it and it's the main focus of the image. No experienced stocker would dare to shoot/upload commercial objects unless editorially.
The smiley is an exact copy of the Yahoo smiley and available on many emoticon sites, even as vectors. You can't piggyback on their success unless it would be blurred somewhere in the background.
Just try to upload original work, like models with a proper release. If you upload other's people creative efforts you'll get a reputation as a bottom-feeder.

Image Sleuth / Re: Weird image (use) - ideas?
« on: November 30, 2011, 00:01 »
Although they are the same image, the first link I opened had a block of text hiding the man's face.
As soon as my message appeared on Google (a few hours later), they cropped the image indeed, as I anticipated.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: POLL: Did you boycott Thinkstock?
« on: November 29, 2011, 18:56 »
Yes/ind. As long as TS was optional, I just enjoyed the 50$ or so monthly from IS being opted out of all PP. I stopped uploading for over a year ago (primarily because of the excess paperwork of a release for every shoot). The moment IS forced my content into their garbage bin, I had to do what a nun has to do: deactivate my entire IS port, just as I had to do with Stockexpert. Purely business and I have all possible sympathy for folks with 3-500$+ that have to stay.

I keep thinking this thread will get back on topic of Istock sales and traffic, but instead there are these endless lengthy posts about Shutterstock's reviewing practices.  what?!
Ah... men. Sigh. So easily distracted, so little focus when they are taken away, every 2 seconds thinking of se Porsches. It must be hormonal. We nuns don't have that  ;)

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Istockphoto Down For Maintenance or Hacked?
« on: November 28, 2011, 14:07 »
Just 2 cents. When I followed a link to iStock yesterday, I got on the "hacked" Jay page too. Everybody seems to assume this was bad taste and unprofessional but I never saw somebody mentioning that iStock - for a while - has really been hacked. Suppose for a moment I was Jay, I would just let them know they had some serious security issues and that I would love to help them out, for a decent fee, of course proportional to their loss of business during the hack. IS would never admit they've really been hacked, not to wake up sleeping dogs.

Envato / Re: PhotoDune Non-ex Rate Increase from 25% to 33%
« on: November 28, 2011, 13:32 »
Thanks, I make that 73 cents RPD at present, and rising to about 96 cents from Dec 1, when the increase kicks in. How does that compare with the others, I am IS exc. so can't do my own comparisons.
Dreamstime: 1.88$ RPD Nov 2011, 1.28$ over 5 years average. 50% subs at 0.35$ so for credit sales, DT should be around 3$ as a non-exclusive. It has to be said that DT exclusives catch about 3-5x more total revenue by the search engine bias and the 50% share on a comparable port. I guess exclusivity weighs heavier on DT than on IS if you make abstraction of Vetta etc.
Horse (equus) : if you play with the idea to drop the IS crown, you need to go all the way and upload to all possible sites, not only PD.  If not, you better stick with IS and hope for better weather.  ;)
PD will be diluted soon since everybody seems to be jumping on the bandwagon. Veer still makes a lot more as to RPD (for me).
