iStockPhoto.com / Re: DeepMeta v3 Coming soon...
« on: February 06, 2017, 16:14 »
I've uploaded v3 and all my files from the old version are gone. Somewhere it says I can continue to run V2 separately but the v3 installation seems to have written over v2, so I can't run the old version.

How can I access all of that previous information?

 >:( >:(
The new v3 does not overwrite the old version. If you're on windows, you should see both versions in the installed applications list.

In any case, once the dust settles and there is more known about which statistics will be made available from the ESP API, I will add import functionality for the old V2 data, which is still there. V3 stores its data alongside the old one.

why deepmeta don't use the IPTC data from JPG? I have my vectors with jpg preview and IPTC ready. Now I have to waste a lot of time to add a new keywords?

This should work, actually. You made me doubt, so I just tested it to make sure. Added an EPS and JPG thumbnail, and the IPTC data (title, description and keywords) was correctly extracted from the thumbnail JPG.

If you have an example JPG where this doesn't appear to work for you, please send it to me and I'll do some testing.
I agree IPTC imports make a night-and-day difference.

My email address can be found on the DeepMeta contact page: http://www.deepmeta.com/Contact/Form/
Thanks.

Wish: Maybe it's possible to not have to be forced every time to chose for the country (the Netherlands in my case) but the last country used to keep as the default choice.
Yep, totally agree. It's a huge list, and most contributors will often just use one or a few.
Considering a few options on how to best approach this, but it's definitely on the list. Thanks!

Thanks!
Keyword counting and auto duplicate removal is already in test. Should make it to release soon.

As for the CV. All I can say is that the API switched from using the iStock CV to the Getty CV. We're all learning about the differences now. In any case, I have no choice: only Getty keyword terms are accepted now.

A lot of users do seem to have a non-english language set as their keyword language at the ESP site:
https://esp.gettyimages.com/app/profile

I'm assuming this automatically got defaulted when their ESP account was setup.
Non English as keyword language is currently very funky and almost unusable (I've been informed a fix is being worked on).
Of course this is worsening the perception of the Getty CV for some users...

Feel free to post more bugs, rants and suggestions. I'm monitoring all channels (with FB being the worst to keep track of)
Thanks

Finally managed to log in and download deepmeta 3.0. I'm watching the tutorial and to be quite honest, I don't like the new version at all. The old one was much more intuitive and easy to use but I guess he had to cripple the program to accommodate ESP. I wonder how much money they wasted on all this? Guess that explains the latest round of paycuts for everyone...

You're probably mostly referring to the way Batches are handled?
I must admit I've been struggling with this. The ESP site is 100% focused around batches: it's your starting and endpoint. This makes sense for ESP, being an upload portal.

With DeepMeta, I don't want to lose the "portfolio management" part. I know there's very little (if any) management left in V3 at this point, but to me, V3 a new starting point, and I'm determined to go beyond what DM 2 could deliver.

This is why I still have flat lists of Files and Releases in there. Contributors will want to see stats and work at the level of their portfolio as such, not necessarily in the context of batches.

I realize I have a long way to go, but I'm not a quitter ;)

All feedback, positive and negative is totally welcome. Don't hold back ;)

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Deepmeta uploading vector ERROR 4702 Help
« on: October 24, 2016, 06:42 »
I got a similar question by email from someone, and asked what the text of the error message was, but didn't get response yet.

There's usually a text along with the number for errors coming from the iStock server, so the text might be an indication.

Did you try uploading the same vector with a downscaled version of the thumb?

Thanks,
Franky

Got feedback from iStock HQ today that a fix for the upload problems with DeepMeta is likely to be there real soon.
Mostly illustrations were affected, and this is one of the longest downtimes we've seen.

Fingers crossed!

Well, maybe.
But if it is like this how can you explain that some like me and others have absolutely no problem?
I mean that if there is a problem from iStock's end everybody should face it. But apparently it is not like this.
For this I was trying to understand if it could be related to a specific version of DeepMeta, a specific platform or a specific OS. :)

Whenever there's an issue in DeepMeta, it's almost always caused by problems with the iStock API servers.
Sometimes only a subset of the users are affected; I guess that's the nature of the beast: there are more than one server, so it could depend on the one you wind up to. Problems could also just affect one type of upload, and in addition, sometimes it's just plain intermittent.

Look at DeepMeta as a browser and the iStock servers as a website: when a site is (partially) down, it doesn't usually help to update your browser, you have to wait for the site to be fixed.

To get a feeling of whether it's just you or lots of others are involved as well, you can check out the following status page:
http://www.deepmeta.com/Support/iStockphotoAPI/

It shows the total errors encountered at any given time. Big red bumps means there's something wrong at the server side.

Thanks all for reporting. I made sure iStock HQ is aware of the problems, and let's hope for a quick fix. Thanks for your patience.

I've released DeepMeta v2.0.21:

  • New settings added the the Options (Windows) / Preferences (Mac) dialog: auto keyword/term and auto category selection is now optional and is off by default
  • New option added to truncate title imported from IPTC metadata to 10 words. This setting is also off by default.
  • Auto term selection for keywords is improved and less aggressive
  • Several improvements to extraction of editorial data from IPTC metadata upon import. Thanks for all helpful and detailed feedback!
  • If no errors are left after metadata import, the file status is correctly set to "To upload"

As usual, keep the reports and suggestions coming. Much appreciated!

161
You're right, it makes sense.
Though of course you should still verify the choices DeepMeta has made, as some may be wrong.

162
I think this weekend.
Still getting in some useful feedback through other channels, and I'll try to address them all.

(Edited to add: there is a new release today, v2.0.20, but this is just a bugfix release)

163
that's very useful. Thanks!

164
Well, the latest version does recognize the format posted by "Pauws99":

"Felixstowe, England, UK - February 22nd, 2016: Outdoor Pool in Holiday Resort"

DeepMeta removes the comma between "Felixtowe" and "England" to comply with iStock"s format:
It's converted into:

"Felixstowe  England, United Kingdom - February 22, 2016: Outdoor Pool in Holiday Resort"

Is this what you had in mind?
Would the full IPTC description be something like above? Having 3 words for the location, separated by 2 commas?

165
You're welcome ... you're the one who started this all ;)

I don't think it'll be too hard to add the changes you suggested. Most likely in the next release.

Thanks again for all the detailed reports. Additional ones from anyone are still welcome!
I suspect there are more special cases of country/state/province naming out there in the field...

166
ok thanks.
I have a new version: v2.0.19: http://www.deepmeta.com/Downloads/

Addresses the problems mentioned above. Please give it a spin and report back.
Thanks!

167
Thanks for trying it out Karen.
If you can, please post the exact description text you used, so I can have a look.

The image IPTC description field:
Berlin, Germany - May 28, 2016: Description."

I also tried "05 28 2016" instead of "May 28, 2016" with same results
Felixstowe, England, UK - February 22nd, 2016:: Outdoor Pool in Holiday Resort" similar result to Karen
As I mentioned in my post right above: there is still a bug.
However, "February 22nd, 2016" is not going to work anyway as a date, "February 22, 2016" would (once the other bug is fixed).

Thanks for reporting, and keep them coming!

You're right. This appears to work if you put it in the title field, but not in the description field.
Certainly still a bug.

I'll address that in the next version (probably by tomorrow).

169
Thank you for your work Franky!!!
Just tried to upload an editorial image with IPTC description field as per the guidance.
DM did triggered the "Editorial use only" check box successfully!  :)
though DM did not copy description field's value into DM Caption field and did not choose the country in the list.  :(

Thanks for trying it out Karen.

If you can, please post the exact description text you used, so I can have a look.

Thanks again for the detailed info and for sending me the example JPGs.

Sorry it took me a while, but yesterday, I've released DeepMeta v2.0.18, which implements the auto-editorial functionality:

http://www.deepmeta.com/Downloads/

When a JPG is imported with title or description formatted as you detailed (the format accepted by most agencies), DeepMeta will detect this and extract all relevant editorial fields. It will also set the "is editorial"checkbox for that file.

The parsing is not trivial, so I'm looking forward to feedback, including examples of metadata which is still not correctly recognized.

Thanks!

Yes, I've reported this to iStock HQ some time ago.
Only a few users seem(ed) affected by this. If anyone still gets this, report back and I'll pass it on.
Thanks

Hi Bill,

I got your report and have sent you an email with additional questions.

Hi Franky,

Sorry for the delay, it took me some time to get back to this. Okay, let me explain in more details and hopefully we can do something about it. Here is the editorial caption format (taken from IPTC Caption field) which is accepted in SS, BS, DT, DP, 123RF and possibly many others:

CITY, STATE/COUNTRY MONTH DAY, YEAR or CIRCA MONTH YEAR: [Factual description of the image content, including what the image portrays].

... (shortened)
Thanks so much for the detailed summary. It's much appreciated!

I can work with that. I'll let you know if I need any more info.
You're all still welcome to send me some example JPGs that I can test with. I'm particularly interested to see which IPTC fields you're using, as well as variations in the formatting. (email: fdm at eazign dot be).

Thanks!

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Easier way to upload editorials to iStock
« on: February 21, 2016, 14:28 »
Am I right that there is stil no option to process/submit several images in the same time in DeepMeta (i mean similar images to be keyworded and categorized in the same time)? Is it ever going to happen?

If FrankyDM could address this i would really appreciate :)

Most DeepMeta users work as follows:
- Add your batch of similar images to DeepMeta
- Keyword the first one, along with categories and model releases (if any)
- Use the DeepMeta copy feature to copy all this info to the other images
- Move all to upload queue, click "upload" and go out for your next photoshoot.

Here's some info on the copy feature: http://www.deepmeta.com/GettingStarted/CopyAndPaste/

Let me know if I misunderstood something.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Easier way to upload editorials to iStock
« on: February 21, 2016, 14:23 »
Franky, I actually meant just Title field from IPTC. When it is formatted like "City, State/Country - Month Day Year: Description of what is going on in the picture" it is accepted as editorial to SS and all other major agencies without much additional clicking/editing required (you would usually have to set Editorial check box/option to "Yes" though and sometimes select special category like at Dreamstime's system for example). However, DeepMeta required to manually specify that information again in picture description dialog and provide separate editorial description. I am not sure, it might actually be iStock requirement and DeepMeta is simply just following the  rules of the agency. My point was that it is redundant, time consuming and simply antique and I was wondering if there is any way to make it more streamlined. Manually picking all these dates and places again just makes it really time consuming to submit editorials to IS.
While it's true that iStock uploads demand all those additional selections being made (country, date), it's also true that DeepMeta could auto-convert info imported from the IPTC title or description and auto-complete these selections for you.

In order to do that, I need to find out what the exact practice is. Details matter.

E.g. you've mentioned:
"City, State/Country - Month Day Year: Description of what is going on in the picture"
as well as:
"City, State/Country - Month Day Year: Title"

A few questions:
- It is the IPTC "title" field you are referring to, and not the "description" field?
- About "Month Day Year": is this "2 21 2016", "Februari 21 2016" or something else?
- If you put this info in the "title" field, then what goes in the "description" field?
- iStock has a separate "caption" field for editorial, where should that be taken from?

Just gathering some info here. I see some possibilities for better automation.
Thanks!
