i can't upload until next weekend anyway so for once, I'm not affected. I hope they get through the Q and resume normal uploading, even for non-exclusives.

Group Business Shots mainly. But also one landscape picture of Perth at night. That shot was taken a long time ago with a Nikon F65 (cheap camera!) and Fuji Velvia slide film. The scan was from a Nikon Coolscan IV and looking back, it's definitely not of the standard I can now produce with the D2X. But if it sells, I ain't complaining!

I think the rest of the town's photographers will hate you if you start taking all their work and doing it for free! I think shooting aspiring models on a TFP basis is fine but I would not do commercial work for free - once you start doing this you will find it very difficult to charge since you will be known as the "free" photographer. Yes you will get lots of good shots for your microstock but who knows where this industry will be in two years time? I would not burn all your bridges yet.

Anyone else having a run of EL sales today? I just had SEVEN in about ten minutes. Needless to say I am running around the house jumping for joy when not posting here.

I know another photog who likes my pics and decided to download some of the ones with the pretty girls in (can't blame him) and then I got an email saying that this was against the good of the community. What did I do?

phildate:

I am baffled by your statement!

Did you download any of the other photogs images?

I can't see how you could be held accountable for someone else's downloads. I also can't understand what the tokens are for if not for downloading others images...

I didn't download any images and I know the other photog didn't get an email. Seemed pretty silly to me which is why this whole mess needs to be sorted before I can support the site with any more images. I don't like having my wrists slapped when I have done nothing wrong.

Do either of you need a modestly talented assistant from Colorado?

I think the commute to Singapore every day would kill you!

Guys like Phil Date will end up having 3000 tokens in their account pretty soon. I'm sure Phil (and I suppose he'll support me on this) would rather have some kickass Alien Bees lighting system or a Noctilux Leica lens instead of... 3000 tokens?

I don't think I will be uploading much more to Lucky Oliver until this issue with tokens is resolved. It is good to see you on the forums Bryan but I don't think you've quite answered everyone's queries yet. I know another photog who likes my pics and decided to download some of the ones with the pretty girls in (can't blame him) and then I got an email saying that this was against the good of the community. What did I do? You don't want someone to download my pics? If that is the case, why give us photographers the tokens. Of course, by initiating this 'incentive programme'  there was bound to be a "you download one of mine and I'll get one of yours" mentality since most photographers are NOT designers. What else to do? Especially with no sign of any other sales yet.

Once I have my 3000 online what else is there to do with the tokens except download other photographers work? A LO shop would be good and I would love it if there were some photographic equipment on sale as suggested. Maybe not Alien Bees (I'm an Elinchrom man myself!) but things like Lens Pens (which are fantastic and the only way to really clean lenses), filters, rechargable batteries...etc would be really appealing.

I can handle the quirkiness of the site - I guess it's different and that might draw people in. But Bryan, please give us an explanation about the tokens, how I can spend them and if others can spend them on my pictures. Because until that is settlled I am unwilling to spend the time adding all those MRFs!!

Leaf, Phildate did you ever get a normal payout?

If I did I would be quite amazed...since I don't upload there!!

I shoot with a Nikon D2X and will maybe upgrade to a D2Xs. Otherwise wil just wait until the D3X come out and hopefully it will be around 20mp full frame.

In many cases I have one particular image in a series getting downloads and the others none - then on other site is another of them that shows this trend.

I find the same thing happening and it is very difficult to predict which image will start to 'snowball'. It is my reason for uploading a whole series rather than one or two "best" shots like they ask. Who are we to decide which are the best shots? I know from a photographic point of view but I would rather let the designers vote with their downloads. Oh well, only another 21 hours and 40 minutes and I can upload again!

With a small portfolio, SS will definitely give you better returns at the start. You can upload it more quickly, your pictures tend to turn up in searches more often and because of the subscripton model, designers are probably not quite as choosy as when they have to pay per picture. But if you leave that small portfolio on SS, your sales will shrink in no time. In fact, even if you have 2000 pictures online, if you don't upload for a couple of months, sales soon stabilise to a mediocre level.

On IS, sales are sluggish at the beginning. However, there is a definite snowballing effect at IS. As a file get downloaded more, it will appear higher up in the "search by downloads", which I suspect is the most popular way of searching at IS. This will lead to more sales which will lead to more sales...

With a large, mature (i.e. 18 months old) portfolio, none of the other sites come close to IS although FT is closing the gap a bit. Which is why I love IS and the upload limits frustrate the heck out of me. Oh well, I can upload again at 7pm EST (which is another day away for me)!

Question: Is there any significant difference when using Windows XP's built-in FTP client as against Interarchy (ftp) or FTP expert

Not sure but I am using a Mac so this is not an option for me. I had to pay for Interarchy but I am very happy with it as part of my microstock workflow

Adobe Photoshop CS2 and Raw Plugin
Noise Ninja (occasionally)
Apple Dictionary/Thesaurus widget
Interarchy (ftp)

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Upload limit
« on: August 23, 2006, 20:18 »
As a diamond member of IS, I have had my upload quota cut from 100 to 50 and I am finding this very frustrating. I shoot a lot of images and I am finding this temporary limit very prohibitive. I obviously want to get images online as quickly as possible but I am just not able to do this with IS.

When the limits were put in place, I had already uploaded my 100 quota and therefore I went to -50 straight away! That means two weeks without uploading and this means loss of earnings for me....and those earnings pay my rent etc...

Just venting...I just hope these restrictions are lifted soon so I can get my serious backlog onto IS so they can start earning...even when limits are back to normal that's gonna take a month if I don't shoot in the meantime!

P.S I always try to stay positive about stuff so this is REALLY bugging me! And it's good to have a place to let off a bit of steam. I would NEVER post anything like this on the IS forum for fear of tarnishing my reputation, or even worse, being kicked off the site. Yes they do instill fear in the photographers, even the very successful ones. IS is my highest paying site and I love it for that reason and that reason only.

Yup, sales have slowed down for me at DT. It's only just ahead of BigStock for me this month. With a big European influence we have to remember that most of Europe is taking vacations in July/August, making the most of the summer weather.

I'm confused about the tokens too...I do some small design projects at times and download other people's photographs. What is wrong with using the tokens for this purpose? Or if we see a nice pic for our desktop? Can you clarify why we have tokens Bryan?

Hmmm, could do with a new MP3 player... Must find some stuff to submit! :-)

I just hope your new stuff gets you loads of downloads coz you're going to have to buy that MP3 player yourself! ;) I think I am right in that you only win the IPod Hi-fi. If only it was the Bose system instead...at least that sounds good  :P

Just submitted some shots to Shutterstock and see that they have announced their contest for the 1,000,000th image. The photographer who submits the lucky shot get a iPod hifi...

Better than nothing I suppose but I not really up to the standard set by IS. I tried this iPod hifi and wasn't particularly impressed by it...but a 30D, now that's worth having.

I just had about 30 out of 32 accepted (still got over 60 more in the Q). They rejected a rather fine example of an isolated handshake (I know I know, but if I've paid for models and they are in suits it's stupid not to get that shot...) only for me to find someone had bought an Extended License for it at SS yesterday :) $20 sales are sweet!

General Stock Discussion / Re: Extended licences compared
« on: August 17, 2006, 11:36 »
I just got an email from Chad & Eugenie telling me that the engineers had now changed all the prices of my E.Ls to $100 (which means that I would get $39 per sale being Gold). I had one E.L sale yesterday which netted me $19.50 (prices were still set at $50 then) and it would have been good to get double that. Not that I am complaining at all!

I have never had a sale on BS that wasn't for 50 cents! But I will check out their Extended License options as you are right, they sound WAY off the mark.
