Adobe Stock / Re: Editorial Video in Adobe?

Pond 5 says they will begin selling clips through Adobe.  Will this include editorial?  If so, what will the price point be?

Thanks

Does this effect photo royalty rates or does that remain 50%?

I have forgotten so much about the 1000 pictures I had uploaded there that my browser did not even remember the password.

So, after a password reset, the reply is: No.

If there are never sales... why do you leave your material there?

With video, it's incredibly tough. Too much production time and content gets outdated too quickly. A few years ago, people were happy with 1080p and now everyone is downloading 4K. It's not that sustainable in the long run so you constantly have to upload.

With images, you have a better chance, but like many have said...you need time to build a portfolio and establish your position in the search rankings. You have to be among the best at what you do and you have be willing to spend thousands of hours on your work. It gets harder everyday with so much content in the market, but it's not impossible. Just don't expect immediate results and don't get discouraged.

I have a mixed portfolio with a strong focus on design. I'm not close to $150k, but it's a reachable goal provided the market doesn't change too much in the next 5-10 years.

The problem is the market is changing.  My yearly return per shot is half what it was 5 years ago and will likely drop by half or more again in the next 5 years.  Eventually the cost per shot will exceed the average lifetime earnings per shot...

30,000 high quality shots with no redundancies at all top agencies might do it... this year.  Then add or replace at least 20% per year to maintain sales.

Zazzel is adding a $2- per month fee for inactive contributors.

I'm considering closing my account there but before I do:  Is anyone having any luck at Zazzel?

Both!  About 25% of my video and photo portfolios are travel editorial.  They sell nearly as well as the commercial shots.  I think journalists and bloggers don't want signs removed from cityscapes and streetscapes.  They want realism.  Accepting editorial would be beneficial for buyers, contributors and AdobeStock.

Most places I want to fly have drone ban laws.  Be sure to research local rules before buying.

Please, please, please start accepting non-people editorial.  I understand not wanting to feed and encourage paparazzi but adding editorial places and things would be great for both AdobeStock and it's contributors.

And the report

http://www.wicz.com/story/40027109/shutterstock-reports-fourth-quarter-and-full-year-2018-financial-results

And if you follow my milestones reports, 70 million new images, now 241 up from 170 million. Not sure how to take the claim of 650,000 contributors, unless that's everyone with one image or more?

Anyway, happy reading.

Maybe they're counting all those new whackamole accounts.

What if someone like stocksubmitter offered a content match notification service?  Maybe a monthly whole portfolio image search to find stolen identical shots in other accounts.  The agencies should do it on their own but since they don't... perhaps third party can fill the need.

I would pay a reasonable fee for a service like that.

Adobe Stock / Re: Locked out of my account
« on: February 22, 2019, 21:54 »
Just wanted to add an update here. It turns out that the reason my account was locked, was because someone got ahold of my Adobe ID and requested a payout of my earnings (over $700). They even set up a fake PayPal account with my user name. Fortunately Adobe got suspicious, didn't make the payout and locked my account. Mat Hayward was a BIG help in getting this mess straightened out. The thief did not get my money, I changed my passwords on ALL of my accounts and my account is unlocked. Thanks to Adobe for protecting my earnings and getting it all straightened out. Be VERY careful with your passwords! If they tried it on me they must be trying it on others as well. I would love to see the dirtbags get caught.

Kudos to Mat and Adobe for stepping up, helping you out and preventing theft.

My thoughts on this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YxJnrHktl9g&t=2s

I skipped the bit where you read the letter, but unless I missed it there, you didn't appear to emphasize the importance of insisting on an opt out, ideally on a clip by clip basis, but at least on a contributor basis. That at least allows contributors to maintain control of participation without pulling videos as the only option.

SS's Q4 results get announced next week. I'm guessing they want to have a shiny new object to dangle in front of the analysts. Contacting an agency is great if they're small and responsive; once they get bigger, leverage is needed to drive change - where leverage is withholding uploads, opting out or removing content.

Negative publicity can also drive U turns if companies do things that end up embarrassing them, but it's not clear to me what part of this price cutting program could form a compelling "they're dumping on the little people" story.

Opt outs are easy to provide.  They are the right thing to do.  Opt me OUT!

Canva / Re: How are the earnings going?

Sales are very poor, thanks Canva for merging database with getty images.

Does anyone know what amount Getty/istock contributors receive from Canva sales?

General - Stock Video / Re: Pond5 removing 4k pricing
« on: February 07, 2019, 22:59 »
Love how they keep repeating how this is going to mean more revenue for contributors. Do they really think people are that stupid? Maybe if they say it enough times in one email, it will come true.  ???

I am mostly constantly surprised by how little people on this group seem to understand marketing and economics.  Costco sells for far less than their competition, but who makes the most money?

I had one of my first businesses back in the 1970's.  I experimented with pricing, as any decent growing business will do.  I sent out mailings (in those days, catalogs were sent by US Mail to potential consumers).  Some with higher prices, some with lower prices. Some where some prices were higher but others lower, trying to determine the optimum price for different lines of products.

In my case, I discovered that if I dropped my prices by roughly 15% that my sales volume went up almost 30%, and I had more money in the bank at the end of each quarter (though I had to hire a couple extra people to handle the increased volume, which was of course, factored into the analysis).

OTOH, I had a photographic art print show in town recently (ended a month ago).  I experimented there and had a few prints at a lower price.  I had fully expected those would be the big sellers. To my surprise, my highest priced prints ($600) sold out, while my cheapest prints ($295) did not sell at all.

mmmm.... That still surprises me, but that is part of the point -- without testing, you will never know what the optimum price point is.  Sometimes lowering a price will increase the volume enough to produce higher dollars in your pocket, sometimes not.  When dealing with widgets that must be manufactured (or even prints that cost me money to make and frame) then you have to consider cost of production of each additional widget in the analysis.  Where there is zero incremental cost in production though (as with digital media), then sometimes the per-unit price seems uncomfortably low.

Of course, you can always keep the price really, really high. That lets you gloat when you make one single sale.  But then I would personally prefer selling at half that price if I can then sell it 10 times...

Good points but they should recruit beta testers.  Surprises are unnecessary and distract from content creation.

I changed all my prices back to normal.  Wish they would provide a permanent opt out for their price experiments.

Canva / Re: How are the earnings going?
« on: February 06, 2019, 19:00 »
For the first time in January Canva became my best earner in front of SS, and this despite having a couple of good footage sales on SS.
I don't understand why Canva is not even in the middle tier agencies.

Needs 50 votes to get a rating and tier number.

And how can we even track sales (simple chronological list), maybe I missed it?
Insights / My Statistics / Select Data Type: Activity > Display statistics

Seeing recent sales should be one click max.  Anything more is wasting everyone's time.  Hopefully the nice Adobe people will make the adjustment.
