I believe Getty wanted to fire a warning shot across our bows for the collective stance which many contributors have adopted recently. This is a very common tactic in large corporations in order to silence employees and regain a sense of dominance, in lament terms 'I'm the daddy around here'. It is basically a form of intimidation.

In Chinese they call it "Kill the chicken to scare the monkey".

That must be why Yuri never updated the msg after meeting with Getty Executives Jan. 28th in London. He noticed one of those shots with his name on it  :o

General Stock Discussion / Re: Are You Afraid?
« on: February 13, 2013, 01:12 »
Suffice to say this guy Bruce never had a business plan in the first place and become what is known as "an accidental millionaire" !

If you think this is the sort of entrepreneurs the industry needs, think again.

Digital Railroad failed big time with the same logic of putting photographers first, turns out buyers couldnt care less and only cared about value for money.

If you want to support a fair trade agency Alamy is still doing fine despite the recent screwups and lowered fees, no Lobos in their forums, and they even allow the F word !

Photoshelter ventured into the fair-trade stock photo business for a short time, but quickly beat a retreat. It's an extremely competitive environment and needs deep deep pockets.

I might just make into the 0.27 level this coming year. Wish me luck!

« on: February 06, 2013, 20:32 »
How many agencies have given us a raise in the past years? Hmm, not too many come to mind. So why single out SS? Personally I think 0.38 for subs is already a lot better than most sites. These days it is already good news when royalties are not reduced.

How would you guys rate your existing solution regarding getting your images found by Google: Excellent, Fair, or Poor?

Out of the box, KTools isn't optimal for SEO. Lots of underscores and characters in the names of images, galleries, etc. You'll need to do some re-writing to improve the SEO. But don't sweat it. If you are relevant, the KTools naming system will do just fine for you.

Getting found by Google is easy. Getting ranked highly is not, but I think that is what you were referring to. I don't think SEO helps as much as the SEO community would lead you to believe. If someone tells you that you need an SEO Expert, assume they are selling SEO services.

Getting your images ranked highly has nothing to do with Photoshelter, KTools, or whatever path you decide to go down. You need to prove to Google that you are highly relevant. Which seems impossible, because how do you become relevant if Google doesn't put you on Page 1?

I look at setting up the store as maybe 1/1000 of the work toward getting yourself recognized. The other 999/1000 is everything else you do to get people's attention.

Wise words. There are several pretty good options available for setting up your own store. Getting people in there is the challenge.

« on: February 05, 2013, 21:06 »
We do not really have "contracts" with the agencies. You agree to accept their conditions and they can change the terms and notify you of the changes. Then you have the choice to either leave the agency or accept the conditions. The word "contract" implies that both parties had some input into their mutual business arrangement, but that is not the case. It is a one-sided take it or leave it. A bit like renting a stall at the market to sell your stuff, if the landlord raises the rent you can either accept it (and the reduced profit) or quit and find a different market. But maybe the original market is still the best location for your products, so you put up with the higher rent.

The $30 is certainly worth it. You get unlimited uploads, and if you just make one sale per year it will pay for itself. FAA is the only POD site that reads IPTC metadata as far as I know which is a huge plus.

234
Downsizing is something you do when your image does not hold water, and you hope to have sales from the smaller file.

Else. Of course you upload the biggest file you can.

Exactly, I only downsize when I'm concerned that focus is not 100%.

General - Stock Video / Re: ClipDealer review time?
« on: January 14, 2013, 05:36 »
I joined ClipDealer last year and uploaded 4 videos as a starter, on the 6th December - they're still sitting in the "Uploads" queue, awaiting inspection.  That's well over a month now.

I realise it's been Christmas and New Year, but even so, it seems a long time; is this normal for them?  Is there something else I need to do?

I suggest you send a note to support. That's what I did when my files weren't getting reviewed and it got results pretty quickly. Just be polite and sweet.

237
Has anyone found a more efficent way of uploading photos to FAA besides the "5 uploads at a time" ?
Nope, and its dodgy as heck, I need to reupload 60% of my photos because of that dodgy HTML upload.

I found that the upload system is more stable if you upload only three at a time. When you do five there are more upload failures.

I use an Ergo Touchpad (http://www.ergonomictouchpad.com/) on my left, and a Wacom Bamboo on my right. No more mouse for me, and it's a lot easier on my wrists.

239
Yep, bamboo pen and touch in the pocket !  ;D

Congrats, it takes a little getting used to, but you will soon get the hang of it.

240
Maybe this one

Wacom Bamboo Pen Tablet - CTL-460 - Graphics

What do I need to pay attention to when it comes to graphic tablets anyway?

That's the one I got a few months ago, it works with touch and pen. I got it because the mouse gave me wrist trouble. I have been very happy with the CTL - 460. I use it in touch mode most of the time, and it is very accurate. Works well with Linux Ubuntu too.

Sorry to warm up an old thread. I'm interested to know if anybody has tried putting their stock photo portfolio on photoshelter and if it was worth the investment in time and money. Thanks.

StockFresh / Re: Anyone else seeing StockFresh sales improve?

Two sales in November, one for 0.50 one for 1.00, total November sales $1.50

244
I'm sure the OP will eventually reach payout. For me Microstock offers a good opportunity to practice what Kipling says in his poem "If", "If you can meet with great sales and lack of sales and treat those two impostors just the same . . . . you'll be a Man." (slightly paraphrased version)

I've had four sales this month, total earnings Euro 1.40. Things are looking up!

Sales are not huge but steady for me. Among the smaller sites Canstock works ok for me, better than most others, plus it is very stable and seems well programmed.

Just tested the multiple uploader and it worked fine. I used Chrome browser and Ubuntu Linux.

Just submitted some pics a few days ago and everything worked fine. Is that a recent issue?

I have been on Linux for about eight years now. At first I used Suse and now Ubuntu's Long Term Support Versions. It's great to see how much progress has been made. Gimp is my main tool for photo editing. I still use Exifer under Wine for entering metadata. Fireftp or Filezilla for uploading. Picasa works well for indexing images. Gwenview is my favorite image viewer.
