iStockPhoto.com / Re: Poor vector sales - Same IS bla, bla, bla...

I think there's a difference between "buyers want platypuses" and "buyers want vector versions of copyrighted fonts"
But put 'em in a "photo" and they're fine. Same with calendars.

Nobody's trying to upload entire fonts. As John said, they figured out a way to accept them in logos.

May I ask, who is Mikemc talking about in that thread? The top-selling vector artist. And where is that file, with the text?

Funny, I am reading this book, "Brightsided," in which the author decries this forced sunny outlook, and even blames it, in part, for the financial meltdown. There were people who were wringing their hands and trying to alert their superiors that something was wrong, but they were drummed out of their companies for being "negative."

Guess I'll go try out some new styles and colors

I just read that and hoo-boy, how offensive. Wow. I had to go get a glass of water and sit on my hands to refrain from posting.

Speaking of ads, it seems every web page I go to these days has a * Shutterstock ad on it. Has iStock just stopped advertising, or what?

1. how can i let the illustrator just make the file name apple tree.jpg?

2. and do i need to set 300dpi for the jpg setting? i notice that the there is no information of dpi of jpg i generate using illustrator.

I prefer to open my AI files in Photoshop. That way I can set the exact pixel dimensions when opening. Using the EPS might cause the problem with the gradient, depending on your EPS settings.

Re: 300 dpi The DPI is not what's important, it's the overall pixel dimension. What site(s) are you uploading to? iStock specifies their JPEGS to be 1900 x 2800, or the equivalent. This means if you multiply 1900 x 2800, you get <5.3 million. So as long as that number is above 5.3. million, you're good to go. You file could be 2350 x 2255, or 4000 x 1325, or anything. The DPI is irrelevant. Now, if you set your file size to 2800 x 1900, then change the DPI, the length and width will change. So watch out for that.

If you're using Save For Web in Illustrator, click on the Image Size tab and just make sure that those dimensions, when multiplied, are over 5.3 million.

As for the [converted] thing, go to your preferences in Illustrator an UNcheck "Append [Converted] Upon Opening Legacy Files." See if that works

I wonder if KKT sent a message telling the laid off folks that money is not what's going to make them happy

How many is considered close enough? I'm about 300 RCs short.

34
"Isn't this saying, for example, if you sell an XL Vetta, the cost of which is 100 credits, your RC total will go up by 100. It says nothing about how much the buyer paid for each credit."

As already said, it has nothing to do with price per credit.  However, over time, the RC of an XL Vetta ( or whatever ) will change, so it is hard to figure out RCs historically.
Right, it has nothing to do with price per credit. But the credit price of the file and by "price," I mean how many credits it sells for is how many credits the contributor gets. Your earlier post seemed to suggest otherwise.

35
Wait a minute:

What are Redeemed Credits?
Your redeemed credits total represents all the credits that have been used by iStock customers downloading your files. It tracks the actual number of credits used in each download, depending on the file size, collection, and any extended license options.

Example: If you are a non-exclusive contributor and someone downloads an extra-small photo, your redeemed credit total will increase by 1. If they download an extra-large photo, your redeemed credit total will increase by 15.

Example: If you are an exclusive contributor and someone downloads an extra-large Vetta photo, your redeemed credit total will increase by 100.

Isn't this saying, for example, if you sell an XL Vetta, the cost of which is 100 credits, your RC total will go up by 100. It says nothing about how much the buyer paid for each credit.

36
Isn't it a testament to how convoluted this whole system is, that no one can truly understand it?

37
No, there is no record of credits used.  Just size or type.
Ok, forgive me for being dense, but if somebody downloads a 15-credit vector from me, that's 15 RCs, right?

38
What do you mean, RC totals are in your stats.  They aren't broken down by date or sale anywhere, just the total.
I want to see daily RC totals so I can average them and come up with a goal/prediction for the end-of-year total. I would think that after a year+ they would be able to add this functionality.

39
I can't find RC stats anywhere on the site or in the CSV file. Do you have to manually count them every day?

Also, is the target period cutoff the calendar year, or sometime in January? I am very close, but I don't know how close. And did they ever credit us for those days that went missing?

Great, now they're sending people to Thinkstock on their Twitter feed

This is an interesting example of a company that was once small, hungry and innovative becoming huge, corporate, and overly cautious. I believe iStock was the first to offer vector files, and now they're the last to finally move away from this 13-year-old format.

Are the people who submitted logos not allowed to pull them?
Yes, I think you have to write to Support, and then there's like a 90-day period before you upload them elsewhere. Which is nutty, because they were never for sale in the first place. I pulled mine about a year ago.

My sales are at about 50% of where they usually are for this time on a Tuesday.
Mine too.  :(

Cheryl, at a certain point you have to stop caring.
So you think there's no big vector announcement coming?  ;)

You make a good point that it's all about the bottom line. It wasn't always thus.

JJRD's comment:

"with bortonia coming to Milan, we never stated that the vector angle of the iStockalypse would be contributor centric."

This is my attempt at translation:

with bortonia coming to Milan, = Adverbial clause indicating that related dependent clause is forthcoming, however it is unrelated to the second clause. This is like saying, "With the high cost of travel this summer, I never said I liked that painting." It is only meant to feign concern for vectors by name-dropping the head of Illustration.

we never stated that the vector angle of the iStockalypse would be contributor centric. = Basically a preemptive escape valve to say, "Hey, we never promised there would be anything for illustrators to do here, should you show up and expect something."

In other words, "Just because bortonia will be in Milan, doesn't mean that there will be much focus on vector contributors, because vector attendees won't be producing any work we can license."

Or something like that.

I think that you pointed out something they didn't want to discuss and they are trying to avoid getting drawn in. Unless you want to get banned from the forums, I'd probably leave their non-answer to speak for itself :)
That's why I came here. I wish I would have avoided getting drawn in today, as I have wasted a good two hours of work time. I'm like Charlie Brown with the football still waiting for the "great things planned for vectors" they promised in Sept. 2010

Is it just me, or do most people need a JJRD translation filter? I asked for clarification on a phrase, and he basically says it was clear the first time. I'm afraid to ask again, because I've already been accused today of not being "nice."

I got a response yesterday. Coincidence?

Since it has been so long, would suggest you take a look at your SPAM folder.  Maybe the response went there?
That was my first thought. Not there.
