Social media is not only friends and family. You can create business pages on Facebook and Google+, start a business channel on YouTube, create a Twitter account. Many companies do that and the general outcome is that social media increase sales.

60% of likes on my FB page are people I dont know. On Twitter I think 95% followers are people I dont know.
What about having a website? It seems if you had a website and were trying to rank well on Google for stock photos you are not going to rank well since there are so many stock sites taking up those first few pages! How much time do you spend updating your social media pages?

I know social media is supposed to be a big deal but I wonder how many people here actually have seen it help there sales? It would seem that unless your friends on social media are graphic designers then spending your time promoting yourself on social media would not really bring you that many more sales!
Seems like people looking for stock photos would be heading straight for the Stock Sites instead of social media sites. What are you thoughts on this?

I have been doing stock photography for awhile now and this time last year I was still new with little sales. My sales these last few days have been like my December sales at Christmas till the new year. Then It picked back up so I am just wondering if there are certain times of the year that sales slow down like that and of course I am hoping that Easter is one of those!

Finally, when you add up the total numbers for independents a number of very high performing sites are not represented in the polls because of voting minimums.
This would hurt exclusives numbers many many times more than nonexclusives. How many contributors here are making more than 2500/month at Shutterstock? My guess is very few. If you were to ask that of exclusives I would guess many of them would be well over that.
So two things here, 1st $2,500 a month at Shutterstock, is there some sort of cap at Shutterstock? I have heard this number before on earnings there, when you reach $2,500 there is an invisible Cap or something! Why is is hard to make more than $2,500 at Shutterstock? And when you Mention Exclusives you are talking about iStock Correct?

If iStock is changing to Subs and Exclusives are getting a bum deal then is Earnings Rating for Exclusive of 307.7 still accurate?
My end Goal is to be Exclusive for iStock but if they are going to lose there 307.7 Exclusive Earning Rating and have it drop below 83.5 Shutterstock Rating then obviously the Exclusive option is out!

Just wondering if anyone experiences a slow down in sales during April due to Spring Break and Easter? Or if April is a slow month for them in General?

Just wondering if anyone here lives where there is a lot of humidity and how that has an effect on your camera such as moisture getting inside your camera or fogging the lens etc...?

My wife is interested in Stock Photography and I am already on Shutterstock, can my wife also have an Account or do we have to just put our photos on the same account? Was not sure if Shutterstock would dock us for having two accounts from the same address etc..?

I have noticed that the Histogram on my camera does not match the Histogram in Lightroom when I shoot tethered to my computer. Is there a way to make adjustments so that Lightroom's Histogram will Match my Cameras?

So I just learned that upper tier sites own several partner sites, does that mean they place your photos on those partner sites and if so do you get paid for sales made on the partner sites? Also how do you opt out. I am currently on SS DT FT.

You should avoid very bad deals like Bigstockphoto and Deposhit, also avoid intransparency about partner-sales like Veer and Deposhit.
Can you elaborate on why not to submit to Bigstockphoto? I am on the fence with Bigstock as they are owned by Shutterstock, on the one hand I think hey its the same company now so why not and yet I worry that if I put my entire portfolio on Bigstock I will see my shutter stock earnings go down since a buyer could simply go to Bigstock and by my photos there! Having been a graphic designer for several years I would check several sites when buying a photo.

For those of us that are not Exclusive on any site, is it better to submit to every possible stock site or just the upper tier stock sites? On one hand it seems smart to get on every site possible, but on the other hand it seems like that would effect sales on your upper tier sites and would result in making less on your pictures with less volume of sales as well. Whats your thoughts on this?

I am still new to stock photography. When I first started I of course applied to get on as many stock sites as I could. Big Stock was one of them, but for some reason after just a few uploads I stopped uploading to them. Now days I have a lot of images on Shutterstock and recently learned that Big Stock is owned by Shutterstock.
Here is my question, having few images on Bigstock for a a while I can see that those images sold well on Bigstock, yet those same images on Shutterstock did not sell even a 3rd the amount of times. So my brain is telling me that people purchasing photos are going to Shutterstock and doing their search and then going over to Bigstock and doing the same search and finding the same image they saw on Shutterstock except now for cheaper thus resulting in many sales on Bigstock for those images and a lot fewer sales of the same images on Shutterstock for the same images.
What do you more experienced stock photographers think? Should I upload to Bigstock?

Just wondering if anyone knows what the price per photo is when purchasing all photo sizes ad types from Subs to Enhanced sales. I was looking at their sub cost of $249 a month for 25 photo download a day which would cost .32 cents per photo yet I am paid .38 cent per sale so that seems like a operating loss for them. And if a subscriber buys a 3 month or year plan then the price for photo is even cheaper.

I noticed in the last week with Shutterstock my sales per day have slumped from 30%-50% for no reason that I can figure out. Also on Friday it seemed as if the server was down half the day. Anyone experiencing something similar? is March a slow month? I have been watching my sales daily since I joined SS and month after month there has been a steady increase in sales so for this to happen seems strange to me.

Well thanks to the internet I got lucky, they are still in business and are signing my release form. So I guess if you are in the same situation, do some digging online and maybe you'll get lucky!

Hi everyone, I did a test in the studio today with the two different grey cards the first one from a Scott Kelby book that I have been using for a year and want to replace, had a histogram with the RGB left of middle with the WB to the far right with a 100 - 200 fluctuation, the new card I bought, the dark grey one had a histogram with the RGB in the middle and WB in the Middle with it and No fluctuation. I can only assume that the Dark grey one is more accurate but that is just a guess, I am not sure where the WB and RGB are supposed to be, are they supposed to be together or apart. Some one who know more than this newbie please weigh in!
I think the Scott Kelby card fluctuated because of the dot printing on the card.

So conclusion is therefore that unless you are using a tilt shift lens, all other lens types will have the same depth of field?
It's physics.
DOF calculator
There are 4 factors: sensor size, f/stop, focal length and subject distance. The closer you are the less DOF and the less that reducing the aperture will make any difference.
So I should back off the subject some, which would mean I would not fill the frame but would have to crop and would also lose some size for those extra large sales. I guess I worry that the stock sites will be less happy with the photo if its smaller in size for resale. What about adding some tube extensions - lens extensions?

Yes I am using it for the White Balance, I was told that no matter if its a light color grey or dark color grey its still a 18% grey and that it does not matter if its light or dark grey. I bought it from a local camera store but I was not sure if they guy knew what he was talking about so I thought I would check here.
I dont understand how you would use it to set exposure can someone explain that also?

So I have been using the same grey card for a year but its just a cheap cardboard one and I had to buy a new one. The Grey on the old one is a very light grey and the new one is a very dark grey, does that matter or will the result be the same for the 18% grey?
Thanks!

Dependant on the size of your subject, there are different ways: 1..The expensive one: A tilt shift lens 2..The troublesome one: Stacking 3..The easy one: Step back and use F16.
BTW?? can photoshop stack? and where is that?
Nice clear photo, rimglow.
stacked of 3-4 photos f 16

I have tried F 16 and the depth of field is almost the same as when I am shooting at F 8 which is where I typically shoot. So your knife picture for example if I focus on the tip the majority of the knife is going to be blurred, If I come in 1/3 from the point then the tip and the back handle part of the knife will be blurred. If I back away from the knife and shoot, it will be more in focus but then its not going to fill the frame and be much smaller which in turn limits the size of the isolated photo when cropping for composition. This of course would be with a 100mm, so if I tired a different mm lens would I have better success? What mm did you use on the knife?

I have tried submitting some diagram images and was rejected because they said I needed a Property Release. Is there any thing I can do if the company who drew them are no longer in business?
Thanks!

Hello,
I am still very new to photography, when I look at some stock photos that are isolations, I notice that they are in complete focus. My mentor, has sugested using helicon focus, however I keep feeling like there must be a lens that can capture an object in complete focus? As of right now I have been taking multiple photos going across an object and ending up having to merge 25-50 photos in photoshop to get a picture completely in focus and its taking many hours to do that. I am using a 5D Mark2 with a 100mm lens.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!

So I was reading a post I started and people were talking about making .20cents up to $23 bucks for a sale. Right now my images are selling for .20-.25 cents regardless of size. On Dreamstime, and Fotolia. Just wondering why my commission is so low compared to everyone else?
Is is because I am a Newbie?
