Off Topic / Re: Pinterest anyone?
« on: May 07, 2012, 03:00 »
I love Pinterest for marketing my prints and POD products, plus for sending out referral links.  It's 1000x better than FB and Twitter, because the pins act like bookmarks with a visual and therefore are much more likely to be forwarded.  Plus they remain on my page, categorized as thumbs, where future visitors can easily browse through my stuff.  No one wants to browse through a store's history of FB posts or tweets, but it's fun browsing through someone's pin board...so the pin board is acting almost like a second storefront or catalog of my various products on various sites.

I mostly use it as an organizing tool for things like recipes, gardening ideas, and Photoshop tutorials.  So much better than standard browser bookmarks!

I wonder if SS had another glitch?  I have a batch pending since April 23.  I don't think I've ever had to wait so long.

To those reporting vastly improved sales, it would seem to suggest the search engine has been shaken so that different people are in front.

I think you're right.  When I was gathering my numbers, I noticed that I will have like six months in a row in the 115 sales range, and then the next six or so months will be in the 85 sales range.  It's been going on for a couple of years now.

A friend uses Package Choice.  http://www.packagechoice.com/  You can also get insurance through the Professional Photographers of America (PPA).

These appear to be US companies.

Yes, they're both in the US.  Didn't know where the OP lives, so just thought I'd throw it out there.

When I Googled "photographer insurance," Package Choice comes up first here, so if the OP does the same, a reputable company wherever he lives will likely come up.  Not many companies deal specifically with photographer's insurance.

March was a surprising BME (had an EL plus someone bought a series of 22 images at $3-5 a piece), so I expected a drop this month.  And surprisingly again, it didn't drop nearly as much as anticipated.  Instead of returning to my monthly average, I'm having my 4th BME.  So for me at least, I haven't seen a decrease in sales.

What type of sales volume do you normally have, if you don't mind me asking?  And do you have many level 4 or 5 images?  There's a theory going around that the veterans with lots of 4 and 5 pics are really suffering from the recent change, and others are benefiting from our pics being priced unattractively for many buyers.  Add in the fact that newer images may be getting preference in searches, and the veterans are really getting clobbered by the "new" DT.

I'm a vet myself with images mostly created 3-6 years ago.  Haven't uploaded much the past three years.  About 1/10th of my portfolio of 2300 images are in the 4-5 range.

Normally I don't share my numbers, but I'm baffled as to why my sales improving while so many others are seeing significant decreases.  April 2011, I sold 113 images and earned $138.11.  March 2012, I sold 112 images (one less) and earned $248.42 (1 EL @ $35).  That's a huge difference in earnings in only a year.  October 2011, I sold 88 images and earned $150.04.  This month, so far I've also sold 88 images, but have earned $177.43...a $27.39 increase.  December 2011, I sold 77 images and earned $102.05.  Two months later in February, I sold 76 images (one less) and earned $135.51...a $33.46 increase.

I dunno what DT did, but it sure seems to be working for me!

I get at least a couple of distributor sales every month.  I think it says a lot about Alamy as a company that they take a smaller cut of these sales than the contributor gets.  I'm happy to participate :D

Agreed.  Even more impressive they are able to sustain giving 89% of their profits to a non-profit medical research foundation.  I'm more than happy to work with Alamy and sincerely appreciate being able to contribute to a worthy cause rather than some greedy *insult removed*'s bottom line.

Really wish AP had picked a better company than Fotolia.   :-\

However, while it may pad the profits in the short term, it is a strategy for failure in the long term.  Not only does it disincentivize the current crop of top sellers, it also gives the middle tier nothing to aspire to.

Lisa, I think with this statement you pointed out the biggest "design error" of the whole western business model. Our society in general cannot continue to run after short term profit - a concept which destroys our planet and literally burns our ressources beyond need. We cannot just continue to grow and ignore all moral values.

Especially in the last 40 years People got more and more convinced that "Profit is everything" and moral and fairness has to stay out of business. The result is that in the same time period we almost destroyed our whole planet and brought the economic world to the edge of a nearly unresolvable crisis.

I do not accept the argument that moral has to stay out of business.
I do not accept the argument that if you work for a company you are not responsable for what the company is doint because you need the money.
I do not respect nor buy from companies which try to ignore all moral - companies like istock, paypal etc.

I completely agree with everything you posted.  I definitely think that morality, or more accurately ethics, should be a part of business, politics, society, and of each of our individual daily decisions.

The only reason I said "fairness doesn't enter into business" isn't because I don't think it should, but because it so frequently is not considered by TPTB.  Also, there is a great deal of flexibility in what different cultures and individuals consider "moral", so it isn't enough to win you a debate about business practices.  Practical arguments are much more persuasive because they can be backed up with empirical evidence.

Interesting thoughts.

It won't be long until IS and FT no longer profit off of my work (and 123RF might just be the next).  I just can't deal with their lack of consideration for anything other than their own bottom lines.  What about mine?  Doesn't matter to them.  So...because I (and all of us) don't matter to them, I'm hitting their bottom line by pulling my portfolio.  The only companies I'll submit my work to are those that are willing to act like we're industry partners and help me grow my business, not drive me out of business by keeping increasingly higher portions of my profits for themselves.

Lisa is so right that when companies "punish" the most successful among us, it gives us middle tier folks less incentive to work harder.  The harder we work, the less they will pay us?  Is that how it works?  Just makes me want to pull my portfolio from their hands, not work harder for them.  There's plenty of places that don't continually hurt their contributors where I can sell my image archive as stock or products.

As the old saying goes, "What you reap, so shall you sow."  Good ol' Karma will eventually catch up with these companies.  Take money away from us that we rightfully deserve, and I and many others will take our money away from them.  Plain and simple.

The past year has been a roller coaster ride.  Record lows during the winter to near record highs so far this spring.  Last month I actually had my first site-specific BME in over three years (DT), and this month I have another (BigStock).  In fact, BigStock's April earnings are 1.5 times my normal monthly average for that site.  It sucks to read how everyone else is going down, down, down, because my numbers are telling me at least some of the micros are staging a comeback.

IS and FT continue their downward spiral into oblivion.

No.  It's not legal.  Send them a cease and desist demand letter and let them know they are currently infringing on your copyrights, and that if they are not removed within a certain period of time, you will pursue legal action.  That should get the job done.

What I do instead of pasting an object into a new document is select inverse and then delete the background.  I'll add a layer underneath and fill it in with white.  That way the image retains the clipping path.

Still waiting.  Seems like they often start on weekends, don't they?  Maybe this coming weekend?

Yep...the first three weeks tend to come on Saturday/Sunday and the last week finishes on Monday.  And it tends to happen on the weekend prior to the last week of the month.

However, that was before all the layoffs.  Seems to be more random now.

At least it's good to see Envato finally understands the meaning of "commercial usage."  Took 'em long enough.

Time Warner Cable and the MPAA sent these notices to me.  They claimed I was uploading stolen movies or TV programs... and demanded I remove them from my computer...
The article says that the companies, including Time Warner, are not supposed to start this policy until July 1. But I guess it has been going on already, unless they got you with some kind of test or pilot program. Maybe Time Warner is more aggressive since they own companies which produce music and movies, while some of the other cable companies do not.

Comcast has had a monitoring and notification policy for years.  It's nothing new...just looks like they are going to step up efforts industry wide.

I knew the answer to this some time ago, but I thought that the original contributors to Stockxpert had their files and future earnings moved across to iStock? I just tried to log onto the Stockxpert site with my old User ID, but it no longer works.

What was the criteria that resulted in you still having earnings reported on that site?

Steve

StockXpert still acts as an archive for original contributors who did not remove their images or terminate their accounts.  Images are migrated over to Thinkstock from StockXpert and earnings are reported back at StockXpert.

I've seen the misformatted text and very slow loading of even that over the last several days.  I'm the US on the west coast.

I'm also in the US on the west coast.  Changing browsers doesn't fix the issues (Google Chrome/Safari/Firefox).  Even the front page has text only, missing images and links that don't work.

No a DCMA notice is not the remedy for breach of copyright - an agency selling (or giving away for free) your photos without your consent is a breach of copyright for which usual remedies such as damages should apply. Really then need procedures to prevent this sort of thing.

+1  Straightforward case of copyright infringement.  If you've registered these photos with the copyright office, you're entitled to statutory damages.  Might want to talk with an attorney before sending DMCA and have them look over the Fotolia and Photoxpress user agreements.
