I got locked up in iStock prison. I requested them to delete all my photos, but they replied they won't. It's like once you are in, you are in for life mafia kind of deal. It's ridiculous.
What? They refused let you cancel your contract, as per their terms? What exactly did they say?
Did you ask to deactivate all your files, or to end your contract with them?
You don't work for iStock, right? If you do, they may end my contributor membership if I post something negative. Wait a minute, that's actually a good thing!! I requested to delete all my photos and here's their reply. "We will only consider deactivating files for legal or similar justifiable reasons as it provides a negative experience for customers when files are suddenly unavailable for license."

I did my calculation and found out that the same photos on iStock I have make 3x as much on Shutterstock. So, definitely I was undercutting myself selling on iStock and it's bad for myself.

Can I delete my files by myself on iStock?

because of low price they sell for and pennies we get.

GettyImages sells photos and videos on their site for very high price, but treat iStock contributors like crap with low royalty amount. Is that right?

« on: February 26, 2017, 18:45 »
OK, thanks everybody for info. I think it's not worth uploading videos there. It's weird that GettyImage site sells (many crappy looking) HD videos for a few thousand dollars, but iStock sells many much better looking videos for cheap.

My understanding is that you only make $12 or less for a 1080HD clip non exclusive sale. Do they sell in huge volume to compensate low royalty?

I wonder if it's a good thing. They sell 1080P video clips for $60 (or less) and give us only $12. So, I don't sell my videos there, but I wonder how it is for photos. Any opinion? I mean, comparing to selling at Shutterstock and Fotolia.

From Shutterstock investor relations:
End of Q2 92,10 mln Images End of Q3 102,70 mln Images
So, avg images is around 97,50 mln in the period.
Earnings in Q3 are 123,101 mln ... 41,03 mln per month.
Download in Q3 are 41,20 mln ... 13,73 mln per month
2,99 $ per image
We can estimate an average rpd of 0,60 $ per photo (avg 20% royalty of the sale prices). My rpd is higher (0,70-0,75 $), but i sell high quality images.
13,73/97,50*100=14 images sold every month on 100 images.
If you have a 1000 image portfolio avg sales are 140 every month. 140 dl*0,60 rpd= 84 $ month
So, we can estimate that avg rpi/month on SS is approximately 0,084 $ per image.
2000 images = 168 $ month 5000 images = 420 $ month 10000 images = 840 $ month
But ... it depends from single portfolio ... For example, I have high quality images (but small portfolio) and my rpi is 6 times higher than average ...
There are portfolios of 1.000 images that sell more than others of 10.000.
Sorry for my english
That's a great math to get a good idea of how things are. Thanks!

I would say you are doing very well certainly much better than me assuming your production costs are under control. I reckon $1,000 a month puts you very much in the "top" tier of earners. If you look just at q3 figures there were 41m downloads ..say 14m a month revenue for SS of $2.91 so say a dollar for us so 14m a month on 100m images. Very rough and ready but I get 14c an image (probably less as videos earn more per dl). I would expect to see a pareto curve with the top 20% of earners comfortably above with a long tail of those more "casual" contributors well below.
Thanks for great reply post. My production cost is under control, meaning I don't want to take a big risk of hiring multiple models/actors and pay for nice location. I have many similar images that probably have never sold. Also, I have some popular good selling photos. My guess is probably 80% of my photos have never sold or have less than 1 or 2 sales.

I accept that people buying clips that don't meet their needs does happen, but I just had a refund on VB for a clip I sold in October 2015. That's a bit ridiculous. How long does it take to figure out a clip isn't suitable?
For real? That's disgusting.

In the past, when Pond5 had 10% off sale, they kept our commission per clip the same. Now they are taking our commission off when they give bulk customers discount. That ain't right.

Yes, I was thinking about raising my price because they are giving lower price to some customers. They should've kept our commission amount the same when they give discount to bulk customers. I just hope that increase in volume will increase total revenue for me, but ideally if more people buy at VideoBlocks, my revenue will increase because I get the highest commission per clip sales at VideoBlocks. Most of the discounts that are seen are the discounts given to customers who have bought a membership package and want to buy a clip which is not in the membership plan. They are given an automatic discount - which is "usually" 10%
I would advise that if you want to circumvent this, simply raise your prices - that's what I did.
In fact I've raised my prices by 10% 3 times this last year as I have not seen any slowdown in sales each time I did it. This last 12 months I've noticed that prices have generally gone up and contributors who still insist on pricing at low levels are simply throwing money away. This is IMHO of course.

Happy new year everybody. Hope y'all are doing well.
I see Pond5 sales prices are discounted by up to nearly 20% from the price I set. I wonder if I should raise my price to offset the loss of my royalty. They are doing this to increase overall volume of sales obviously, but I hope my sales will increase too. If not, it's a bad thing for us.
