If you follow iStock on twitter, you will get the announcements:
As for today, this was on twitter:

NOTE: We've got a few hours of downtime scheduled for today (Saturday) while we continue to do some upgrades.

A little better than average for me. I think a
lot of it has to do with the composition of our individual portfolios.

For instance, my sales usually take a nosedive in November.
But my port is weak in winter seasonal images & I have zero Xmas stuff.

« on: June 24, 2010, 21:49 »
I have played with it a little today as well.
It is light years ahead in speed compared to running the browser on the iPhone.
And the images look stunning on the iPhone screen... my guess is they will be even better on the iPhone 4 with its superior display.
Much better than they look just using the Safari browser.

I don't know if this will have an enormous impact on sales, but it certainly is a needed evolutionary step for iStock and the micro industry.

The new iPhone App is up & running and available from the App store.

Has anyone tried it out yet?
Thoughts?

« on: June 19, 2010, 12:19 »
Hmmm, iStockphoto... there's an app for that  :)

It is way past time for a mobile version of the site, that is for sure.
An iPad can access the full site pretty well, but an iPhone is dead slow on it.
A streamlined mobile version would be ideal!

So do you seriously think buyers are purchasing stock photos from their phones? Personally, I think there are WAY more important things to spend their money on...like mirror sites so when there is a snowstorm in Canada, the site still works.

Or is the streamlined mobile version you are anxious for only for your personal use?  ;D

+1 on the mirror sites!
I already have an app on my iPhone for checking sales and stats that works pretty well for personal use ;D

It just occurs to me that society is becoming more and more reliant on mobile devices.
Why not be able to easily view images from a streamlined mobile interface?
A designer could peruse the site while taking the train into work for instance.
When he/she finds a useful file, he/she could but it into a lightbox to view when at the office.
Or purchase the file on the spot and have the option to download it a few hours later at the office.

Does iTunes give aways songs for free? Oh wait, yeah they do but just as a teaser to introduce new artists.

I really don't feel free is a sustainable business model now, or ever.

Canon / Re: Canon 5D Mark II or 7D?
« on: June 15, 2010, 15:32 »
The 5d2 is the better stock camera.  That said, I love my 7d.

Sure it is but on the 7D i can use my old Lenses too

Sounds like you have answered your own question. Go for the 7D!

Canon / Re: Canon 5D Mark II or 7D?
« on: June 15, 2010, 13:59 »
The 5D MKII has a lower pixel density. Therefore it should have lower noise, especially at higher ISO settings. The full frame sensor is also ideal for portraiture as it will have a faster depth of field fall off (Bokeh) as compared to a crop sensor camera.

The 7D is an ideal choice for sports, birding or any other  application where you need more reach from your given lens.

« on: June 13, 2010, 19:04 »
Lisa,

Are they getting views and no sales or no views at all?
I notice my new files that get a fair about of views begin to sell within three to four weeks after approval.

Almost nothing new sells for me in the first couple of weeks though.

313
You have that right.
I was speaking to a full time professional photographer (w/over 20 years experience) a few weeks ago about this very thing.

Once upon a time he worked for the newspapers.
He was finding that more and more his stories had been scooped by amateurs with point and shoots and an internet connection.

iStock calls this crowd-sourcing, which in fact is what drives microstock (or at least it did in the beginning).

At any rate, he no longer bothers with photojournalism.
He makes his living shooting corporate portraits, boudoir, weddings etc.

Off Topic / Re: The Reoccurring Prop Newspaper
« on: June 09, 2010, 14:23 »
I wonder where you could get something like that printed on actual newsprint. It would be a useful prop if you didn't have to worry about model/property releases.

I would not put too much effort into that sir.
I believe that print based newspapers will soon be extinct.
The iPad & it's copy-cat ilk will soon be the way all daily news will be read.

Yeah well anyhow, end of story end of rant, a kind person at IS told me what to do and thats good enough for me. Im going to bed.
Dude. I'm a jerk. Don't go ruining my street cred.

He didn't mention you by name sir. You just outed yourself  ;D

Nice find. Thanks for posting.

Also viewed as 10% of something is always going to be more than 100% of nothing!

Let me put it to you this way... If you were a waitperson in a restaurant and gave exemplary service, would you be happy if you were left a $0.25 tip or would you leave it on the table in disgust?

Off Topic / Re: Refurbished Mac Products?

I have both a MacBook Pro Laptop and a Mac Pro desktop which were both purchased as refurbs from Apple.
No problems with either one. Go for it!

Before microstock, how many of us earned ANYTHING from stock photos? I think that is something that many of us lose sight of on a regular basis.

We all wish that we made more per sale. However, compared to making nothing, what the sites pay us is much better!

I echo, no, no, no!  You might as well bend over and get the soap.

Right you are Sean.

Cheap subs are the reason that I became exclusive @ IS and am opted out from the partner sites.
My lowest commission now is around $0.70 and my highest is $18+ (thus far & not counting extended licenses).
Selling for $0.25 is a losing proposition in my book unless you just happen to have a shot that sells in the multiple thousand of times.
That is a very rare shot indeed.
Why would anyone want to give their hard work away for peanuts?

Well technically, if you look at a a map of Pangaea, there was once only one super-continent.

But now we are REALLY getting off topic  ;D

Off Topic / Re: First artificial cell is made
« on: May 24, 2010, 08:47 »
Trying to impose birth control is in my opinion morally unacceptable. A lot more so than trying to artificially create life. We're looking ahead, into the future, not back to the Dark Ages.

Really? Morally unacceptable? I think if you visit Mumbai you could well change your mind.
Seeing four million people living in squalor right in the middle of what is considered to be a 'modern' city certainly changed my world view.

India's 'standard of living' may be getting closer to the west for SOME Indians. but not the vast majority.
The cast system may be partly to blame, but at the huge population of that country there is no way they will ever have a decent standard of life for the masses.

It is of little use trying to convince anyone that has never been there though. I urge all people that live in the relative luxury of western civilization to visit the more squalid areas of India (not the resort areas where you are cut off from reality), and see if your notions of population growth and sustainability are not changed forever.

Possible use for these sort of images: Painting supply company, Pantone color matching software advert, Print shop advert (if you come up with it, we can print it), etc, etc.

There is a market for almost everything if you can think like an advertising agency.
I do agree however that the volumes needed to sell at micro prices don't really justify the time and expense invested in such shoots.
