as for me, I don't take it personal. I thought my comment made it perfectly clear. I couldn't care less. I take pictures because I love to do it. I enjoy it, I spend many hours playing with my work in post production.... and there are those that will buy my product. I really don't care if I am considered a professional or not. What I am labeled has nothing to do and does not affect how much money I am making doing something I love. I have no doubt that I make as much or more than many who do this fulltime as their first and only job and who call themselves " professional photographers" It ain't no biggie to me. Please don't take it that, I take it.. personal. I don't. =tom

Before this is read, this is NOT a slam against the author of the thread. Just MHO. What's it matter anyway? This debate has been raging for years. I have a day job (not photography). I shoot pix 'for hire'. I shoot pix for sale in gallery. I shoot pix for sale in microstock. I shoot pix for sale in macrostock. I have an accountant that handles my photo business. I have a business bank account for my photo sales. I have a business credit card for my photo business. I am published on a regular basis. My business is registered with Uncle Sam and I have my Fed I.D. to pay taxes on my photo biz. and....... My wife and I are turning down photo work, just ain't got the time. now... because I have 'another job' and I don't shoot 40 hours a week.... I understand I am not to consider myself a 'professional' photographer? Guess I'm missing something.. but you know... I don't really give a rat's butt what I'm called... Pro, Loser, Flunky, Amatuer, Snap-shotter, big fat bald guy... whatever.... I know what's going in the bank, what I'm paying income tax on and how many magazines and books, advertisements and websites, private person's den and livingroom walls, professional and business offices... have my photos in and on them . All PAID for. so... ..... i'm not a pro. boo-hoo so what? In a few months, when I'm sitting on my fat backside shooting bison in Yellowstone, having my accountant writing the entire trip off, ....I'll shed that tear.... thinking, gee, they won't call me a professional. sure, I will. Yeah... Like Adeptris said... I am also one of those $#%@(&s that is ticking off those old timers from Getty and where ever. I'm a demon with a 5D. =tom

I always get my butt kick with this simple task... question... do I have to wait until the edit is upgraded on IS? when I immediately try to copy the link, it comes up with 'edit' in the middle... sorry, stupid question.... but.. none-the-less, i gotta ask. =tom

Anyway, I'm concentrating on macro. Today must upload my new batch to Alamy...
My thoughts exactly. Although I will continue to load to SS & IS. I have now essentially stopped loading to all my other micros. The ROI just isn't there anymore for me personally.

beat ya all! I stopped uploading there well over a year ago.... deleted all but one pic. got one picture there. One. my problem was keeping my credits safe... they kept disappearing.... I was never given an explanation. I'll never go back to FT. Sadly, I have to agree with MIZ. I admire all your stand and your action, but I am afraid it won't matter squat to FT. They have the whole world of photogs to suck in. For every one of us that backs out, there are 3 newbies to take our place. MIZ is correct, you better be prepared to follow thru, cause............. you'll probably have to. You can add my name, but I'm sure they really give a rat's butt about my one pic... long live the revolution!! =tom

thanks to all for the clarification... On my own direct with publishers I work RM or for hire. I still maintain all the rights to the images even at for hire. All is done on a 'one shot' deal. One article, set price. If they want to use the pix again, they pay again. Only exception, if a picture is the topic of a future letter to the editor and they want to use it, I'm not going to be a jerk about that. Every time I begin to think about exclusive, threads like this come up and remind me of all the mundane things I forgot about. Now... this may sound ignorant and if it does, please excuse me. I am still relatively new to this game. But... say a pic I took way back in the day when I snapped my first pic out of a 35mm in the early 60's.... I want to sell it now .... if I was exclusive, .... I couldn't. Correct? In effect, once you sign exclusive with anyone, everything you ever shot in your life comes under that agreement? True or no? I just don't understand, when all is said and done, how this is beneficial to a photog unless they did 100% of their work thru that single agency. What about all you folks that shoot weddings and such? Or do 'for hire' work. How's an exclusive deal allow for that, or... it doesn't... Told you it was an ignorant question.... sorry. =tom

The Contract specifically does not allow:
* Images for sale on artist's own site (including collections, CD-ROMs, etc). * Artist to give away images for free, either from their own, or any other site. * Rejected images to be sold elsewhere
This is the killer for me. I broker my own images to magazine/book publishers. I also donate prints to charity auctions such as RMCC and others. That's the real kicker. I can't even give away a print that I own. That's just wrong. =tom

Yes, more experienced microstockers do complain in the forums. And they are the ones taken seriously. I have been doing this for over three years and make my full time living at it. I don't complain often, but when I do it is over something I feel is important.
In the matter of rejections: Herein lies a major problem. Choose and pick your battles. Too often photogs bitch and moan over every rejection that gets kicked back to them. When you're burning up the cable with flaming mail to every agency over every rejection because in your humble opinion, 'Hey, that's a great shot, you people are....... ' you only galvanize the individuals that have to deal with your gripes! I know, I've had to deal with my share of customer complaints over 35 years. I know how I react. Stop complaining about nonsense. If you want to be taken as a serious photographer..... act like one. As lisafx said, "I don't complain often, but when I do it is over something I feel is important." amen to that, sister!! =tom

What I hate most is putting a lot of work into post-processing (only to see it rejected). Does that count? Sorry Bateluer, just goofing. But seriously, I think that is what ticks me most. Doing all that work and sometimes, it is tedious work. Example: I just sent up 3 pix of a hydroelectric dam. There was a power company name in a large sign that was mixed in with the hundreds of power lines and towers. TON of work painting it out.... only to have all 3 shot down. What a colossal waste of time. But, that's the biz. So... post processing when it turns out to be fruitless. =tom

The last option 'I don't think Leaf is a good manager or forum moderator' was not intended to answered affirmatively. Geez. Maybe i'm not good at designing tongue-in-cheek polls.
I removed the option anyways, 2 people answered yes and that's depressing.
Exactly my point, zymm' . Why do folks like that bother coming around then? If this forum is so bad and all that contribute are such idiots... why do they come here? Please, don't. Leave the lousy moderator and his idiot members alone. I'm glad you removed it. Leaf doesn't deserve it nor need to read it.

.......way to much money to listen to whiney people complain about their stock agency that they belong to ...........
I hear ya, Jack!! And I simpathize with that thought. But more than that, I have to wonder about the folks that come on here just to fight with others. What's the point of that? And there's been a couple threads where that has been hot and heavy lately. Heck, if that's all I've got to with my free time, come on a forum, nit pick and call people names.... I'd really need to take a closer look at my life. Maybe up the barrel of a 45. Too harsh?..... okay, I'll just say, they need to get lives. But you are right on with your point, sir! It does get old after awhile. I'm a premium. Why? I've gotten more than $25 bucks worth of education here on MSG. For sure!! I'd have paid a lot more elsewhere for those tidbits. 2. I think for the most part, it's a really great forum. For the most part, informative. Usually get news here first concerning the industry. Don't have time to surf the net all day, MSG keeps me up to date 3. I think for the most part, the majority of MSG members are decent people that usually look out for each other and encourage one another. Unlike many other forums out there. 4. I think Leaf is just fine as a moderator. In fact, he is nicer than me and puts up with a heck of a lot more than I would. Point, there's a few malcontents around here that, if it was my forum, I'd have bounced off a long time ago. I can also understand the "just can't afford the 25". Times are indeed tough for a lot of folks and, it's only getting worse. 25 bucks is 25 bucks, heck, in my town that's only 6 gallons of gas which doesn't go far in a Chevy Suburban. Fortunately, I could still ante up the 25 and was happy to contribute. As for the site... my only advice to Leaf would be... dump the couple a-hoes and will all enjoy ourselves more. Thanks to Leaf for his work and time on MSG. Glad I could help in some way. =tom

any rumors on the price??? =tom
I haven't heard anything about the price but I expect it to be between USD 2500-3000 in US but if it goes higher than that I wouldn't buy one
That's what the 'old' 5D (body) is going for right now.... ... humm..... If that turns out to be the case.... I'll have one of the first ones, for sure! =tom

I'd like to do it fulltime as a retirement job... but, I was fortunate to "step in that stuff". In my first year playing in micros, I was contacted by a publisher (seeing my junk on the micros) to be picked up for free lance assignments. Hence, I was able to by-pass the microstock middleman and start pimping my work myself with a much, much, much better return on time investment. However, I continue to upload to the micros. While it realizes less of a return, I still see it as a reasonable return for minimum work. Although, I will never retire on my micro $$, it keeps me in equipment, pays for vacations and.... my accountant thinks it's great! =tom

It's always amused me how some people love stirring the pot on internet forums... They must have very boring real lives.
Amen.

..........I signed up started to upload and then........ stopped and deleted all I did. Part of me wants to go out there and expand... and another growing part of me is saying, 'downsize', dump the low earners, you don't need more. LO, busted, NLS, busted.... 1/2 dozen others, may never achieve a payout in my lifetime... I recently dumped scanstock, crestock, (usps a while ago), reduced my folio on FP & FT and I've essentially stopped uploading to 123, DT & BigStock, not enough return on the effort. I'm sticking with StockXpert, SS & IS. I never thought I'd ever hear myself say... ...I'm thinking exclusive, not a whole lot, but I would have never considered it before, in fact, I was quite vocal at bad-mouthing it.... .. Depends on which way the wind's blowing at IS in the future. Although, it would be tough to give up SS. ... But, for me, I think I'm done with upstarts. We'll see what the future brings. Besides, Yaymicro has hundreds of pages of the stuff I sell already, and a lot of it looks pretty good (not that I fear competition, not at all.... it just that I usually don't take sand to the beach). For the immediate future, I'm going to focus on building at Alamy and see what happens Best to those of you that are taking the Yay plunge!!! =tom

slow but steady. sad truth is, all sales totaled on all my other agencies together, do not equal what I do on either SS or IS. Go figure. =tom
This is true for all but the elite.
Earnings from DT only begin to count for something when you have a lot of level 3/4/5 images. Once you hit Emerald level (10k+ sales) on FT you can significantly raise your pricing. Until you reach those levels you'll have to be satisfied with three-figure monthly earnings from those agencies. It's a fair guess that only the supra-elite are pulling four-figure dollar amounts from any of the other places just yet.
I hear ya, sharply_done.....i've got a loooooooooooooooong way to go then... With the my new 5D I will be focusing on expanding my Alamy 'folio. Hopefully, the bucks will pick up there. =tom

They emailed me requesting that I fill out and return a 1099. I've got $78 bucks coming. I would assume since they wanted the tax form that they intend to pay. But I was also told not to expect it until the end of June. =tom
