I just remembered that this sort of discussion is probably banned under the amendments to the SS contract.

I would hardly think this could be considered as sharing of detailed sales data.

377
i find this ironic, even coming from leaf himself.
why should this be a hypothetical question when we can extrapolate from real earners
from the sean locke to yuri arcurses to dolgachoves etc

Using Sean, Yuri, Dolgachov, Monkeybusiness and the like to suggest what someone will make on Shutterstock is like using Brad Pitt, George Clooney, and Julia Roberts to figure out what you will make if you go into acting.

haha.. good analogy.

378
What I find interesting is the three peaks in earnings at 20k, 30k and 40k.  The latter I understand, but do the other two represent particular types of portfolio?

The 20k and below peaks are pro shooters with budgets for each shoot, the 40k and above are the zero budget shooters saturating the libraries.

I think you're probably spot on.

Thanks for the thorough answer cobalt.  I have an idea myself obviously but am interested to see how wide the spread is between different opinions.

In general if someone were to ask me I think I'd say somewhere between 10,000 and 50,000 images depending on the quality and subject matter.  It would certainly be interesting if Shutterstock dove into the midstock market.. I'm not sure that's going to happen though.  They seem to be pretty strong where they are and strengthening their position instead of spreading out might not be so dumb.

Shutterstock gave me 58% of my income this month - it's starting to be a scary majority.. but nice they are doing so well.

Earnings overall are pretty flat, higher than last year but so is the size of the port.  RPI is quite a bit lower than it has been in the past, but I haven't uploaded much in the last 6 months so I have only myself to blame for that. :(

381
I'm curious what people think from their own data.  I know that everyone's income is different from different images etc.etc. but if we get a few votes we should find an average.

I'm certain someone will come in here and say what the overall average earnings/image on Shutterstock is - but I think the overall average is quite a bit lower than the average of people who are active shooting creative stock (and not shooting 100,000 'news' images).

Anyhow, I'm curious to see how varied the opinions are.

upload to ss, you will earn 5k$ with 10000 images per mounth

I doubt that most people with 10k images are making 5k/month on SS, or 6-7k, as said by stock-will-eat-itself.  Maybe there are a few, but can anyone back that up?

I have over 5k images there and do well but hardly ever 3k/month even in better years.

People are making life decisions.  They need realistic numbers.

I don't feel Cesar's numbers are too far off.  They also agree with yours

he said 10K images for $5K or 50 cents/image online
You said 5k images for hardly ever over $3K (or 2.5K) which is also 50 cents/image online.

Perhaps you were arguing that you can't scale up from 5K images to 10K images and expect the same $/image.. but I think you can.

General - Stock Video / Re: Clipcanvas shutting down?
« on: September 29, 2014, 23:46 »
Very positive news on the ClipCanvas front. I have been corresponding with them via email. This is their latest:

I am happy to say that Clipcanvas has reached final agreement to be acquired by a single owner. All terms have been agreed upon, and those of you with payments outstanding will be happy to know that this is one of the very first things to be addressed.

Going forward, Clipcanvas will get a lot more resources to grow, and both your voice and work will be an integral part of this. I believe we have a bright future ahead of us, and I hope you do too.

More information about the next steps will be sent to you as soon as the acquisition has been approved by our General Assembly. This is a formality, and the final stage of the process will be concluded within the 14th of October, as required by Norwegian legislation. As always, you may reach out to me directly, using my personal email given below.

I want to thank you for staying with us during this period. The new owners believe in you, just like I do, and without your patience this would not have been possible. Thank you.

Sincerely yours,
Mr. Christoffer Berg
Chairman
Clipcanvas AS

Yeah - great news.  Kudos to them for being open and honest about what is going on.

They certainly gave the image away within their press release so Netropolitian are the ones to blame and the news-sites just used the image in good faith. It's also a good example why we should demand higher prices  these 0.38 downloads are joke and it's a double-joke considering this exclusive Facebook for the rich demand a 9000,- entrance fee but are too cheap to spend any money to create an exclusive image for their exclusive club.

Yeah, it would seem that if they are giving it away with their press release (I haven't seen the press release however) then the Netropolitian would be the party at fault.

386
Has anyone had experience in this...

There is a site that has used my image on their homepage (I assume they paid for it) as part of their 'look'.  They have gotten lots of traction lately and all the news sites are using that image in the news article and just grabbing it from the site itself instead of licensing it like they should.  Has anyone had experience in chasing infringements like this down?

Stocksy / Re: Stocksy application... was declined

A few angry / insulting posts were removed (and the replies to them).

as an aside, and as an off topic reply to one of the removed posts - of all the members on this board to criticize for being 'anonymous' or not who they say they are... Sean is the last person you should be pointing fingers at.  I've met him in person - and Sean is certainly who he says he is.  He is also one of the very few people on this forum who has both their real name as their user name and self portrait as his avatar.  Kudos for being real!

My only wish would be that both totals show, instead of a running total. If someone has five Agree and five Disagree it's different looking than 0 which implies that no one cared enough to give an opinion.

agreed.  It's high on my priority list.

It goes occasionally, then comes back again. No worries!
Indeed. Because at the moment, mine is back, but yours is showing zero - ha! Someone's having fun with us.

If there is a problem with updating the stats it gets reset to 0.  When it tries to update the stats again, if it is successful, it goes back to the correct number.

@ Leaf - it is not very cool that we can see alt name (post author) of people who want to stay anonymous on the main page.

It's a little bug that I haven't been able to get to the bottom of.  When you start a new thread is posts your log-in name, not your profile name.  If you want your profile name to be the same as your log-in name I can change it for you.

first there's a small bug -- if you disagree, then heart, the post ends up with a +1 when it should be a 0

but bigger issue is using 'disagree' -- I never gave negatives to posts I disagreed with (and I never vote a post up JUST because I agree with it) I vote on posts based on the actual content and how it's expressed - disagreeable speech can easily be countered with more free speech.  rather the negative should be used only to chastise abusive, ad hominem, and other nastiness, which is better covered by the negative sign

If you click Disagree one time it will give -1, if you click disagree once more time it will turn to 0
Same for Agree
(not very intuitive btw)

That's because when you click it once it votes disagree, when you click it again it takes away your vote.  That is the way it has always worked.

It seems to work the same was as the old - did, i.e. each disagree just cancels out a heart and vice versa.
Wouldn't it be better (assuming the feature is deemed valuable) to show the number of agrees/disagrees, there being a big difference between a post which gets five hearts and 0 disagrees and a post which might get 40 hearts and 35 disagrees (or vice versa).

Yeah, I highly agree but it would take several days of headache and coding and possibly crashing everything to get the totals showing for the + and -. The original plug in is coded to just have a running total (unfortunately)

OK, thanks for the explanation.

It's definitely on my to-do list.. I just haven't had the nerve to tackle it yet.

Hit F5

Did that - can we have back the arrow and the heart, please? Pretty please? With a cherry on top?

maybe.. just testing things out.  I still don't see the new buttons so I can't give them a visual adjustment (yet)

Two little icons, an heart and a crossed heart, could be aesthetically nicer
Or simply + and -

I agree but people were getting in a tizzy about getting -'s
Nobody should feel bad about getting -'s but the down arrow seemed to promote ill feelings or be some sort of an insult.  I thought that a simply disagree label might be more clear.  Perhaps people will know not to be insulted if someone simply disagrees with them.

I thought it would be more correct and less nasty feeling to simply label the arrows as agree or disagree.  The images are cached though so if you aren't seeing them (i'm not yet either) you just have to wait.

Shutterstock.com / Re: Price increase on Shutterstock?
« on: September 18, 2014, 04:36 »
If they increase pricing and not our royalties, they are getting into the same category as Getty / Istock, as it literally means a decrease in royalties. Instead of a raise, they go the opposite direction.

Maybe they are testing prices and will then give a raise.... hoping
