I have seen images on IS that are clearly superior to some from the 'big boys' and vice versa.

It it were me... I would buy the best one for the job. Which in this case is the more expensive item.

As was already stated on this thread, its a question of how short sighted you are, since you obviously don't need the extra cash to eat or put a roof over your head. This was made clear by your desire to use the windfall for an amp.

OTOH, companies such as Dell and HP have used microstock in the past for their 'back to school' ads. Which really begs the question of why go better than 'good enough'.

Well, that was sort of nice... but I never heard them actually say that stealing a photo is an infringement of copyright and against the law.

I think Getty was playing softball on this one.  I would have liked them to hammer home the point that stealing an image can cost much more than just licensing it in the first place.

I do think the lousy economy is party to blame though...

Today I was talking with a dear old friend who owns a courtroom translation business.
She is currently two months behind on her mortgage payment. See, she is a licensed courtroom interpreter, and charges accordingly. The courts here have gone on the cheap and are hiring unlicensed interpreters instead of coming to her.

Paul C Buff sells a battery pack called the Vagabond II.

I use it on location shoots and am very happy with it. Reliable and recycles quickly.

Look like congrats are in order, Daniel.

Front page of IS, Photo of the Week! That can't be bad for business, eh?  ;)

General Stock Discussion / Re: Best place to sell nudes?
« on: January 04, 2010, 00:07 »
I had a quick look in the portfolio of the OP "modellocate", and he has great erotic and tasteful conceptual shots. In fact, it's a great photographer, imho. What I saw is very usable in microstock, but he is already on the main sites.

Models that agree to that kind of work shouldn't complain they are used on erotic sites. There is a (huge) market for this kind of content, and they fulfill a market need. They can't expect to be featured on a church site, don't they?

lol, you never know. some clergies do ... rofl..

no seriously, if porn or erotica is where the OP wants to concentrate, they would be better off starting their own erotica site, instead of settling for a few pennies per dl, doncha think?

I was told by a fellow that used to be a porn videographer in the main kingdom of porn (the San Fernando Vally, Ca.), that the internet has pretty much killed the professional porn industry. There is just too much free content on the web.  People will not pay for that which they can get for nothing.

So, where does that leave the photographer that shoots erotic art?  I thnk that he/she would pretty much be in the same boat as the video porn industry.
What distribution avenue is really left except stock?

Computer Hardware / Re: printing
« on: December 29, 2009, 21:45 »
I have an Epson Stylus Pro 4800.
It will do 17X22 in prints. The quality is top drawer.

I use it to print items for display and also for my book (portfolio).
I sometimes use it to make prints for clients.

Having said all that, when a client wants a large number of prints, I usually use White House Custom Color www.WHCC.com for that sort of thing. They have products that I cannot make, such as metallic prints and the prices are very reasonable.

General Stock Discussion / Insurance?

For those of us that from time to time do location shoots; do you carry liability insurance?
If so, who is your carrier and are you happy with them?

Learn to overlight and almost blow out the backgrounds on every shot so that my images will look the same as all the big sellers.

Yeah, schools in the USA are already on holiday.
Many people use the time to visit relatives or take time off to get in that last minute shopping.

Last year, I began getting downloads again on the 29th. Just an FYI.

So, just relax and enjoy the season, there's nothing that can be done about it anyway.

Happy holidays!  ;D

Here are some of my Vetta images.

I think you will see there are quite different than the example lightbox you posted.

Here is an interesting way to look at the iStock 2010 thread to get a sense of who is talking about what:

Looks like the Matrix to me.
All I see is Blond, Redhead, Brunette...

I'm with disorderly.
I have been in one industry since 1978.
With one company for 27 years.

Photography was something I grew up doing, studied in college and abandoned right after.

Digital brought me back & I fully intend to make photography my full time second career as soon as I get the rest of my ducks in a row.

nothing much we can do. a lot of my images are probaly stolen too ,usually i'll just leave it.

Bad idea. Not enforcing your rights just encourages more theft.

391
Richard, thanks!
I'll check that out  ;D

I also use the links to "related images" method a lot;  I have no way to evaluate how successful that is, but again, it can't hurt and with DeepMeta it's easy.  My feeling is it's likely even better than a lightbox - after all, someone has already viewed one image, they must be interested in that subject.

How is this done in DeepMeta?
I'm a DM newbree.

Yeah, my daughter used to use the same negitiating tactic on me.
"Dad I need a dress for the prom. I found the perfect one and its only $1500 US"

Me: "What?!! No way, you better look for something more reasonable"

A few days later... "Dad, I found a really cute dress and it's only $300 US and since I am saving you all that money on the dress; I need the matching shoes, earrings and a clutch bag that go with it. The whole ensemble comes to only $675 US. Good deal huh Dad?"

Daughter says the above with huge smile and a hopeful gleam in her eye.
I've been had again  :'(

@Jonathan, be happy you only have sons  ;D

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Refund- client did not want this file.
« on: December 08, 2009, 18:51 »
Maybe companies are cracking down on designers...making them return any photos they didn't use for a project.

Possibly.
But as before this was purchased in a rather large size and refunded the same day it was purchased.

In the past it has seemed that designers purchase smaller files for mock-ups and then if the image is approved by the client, the larger size is purchased.

Weird, this latest phenomenon.

Suddenly silver is very far away. I don't know whether silver means higher yield or just higher upload limits.

Yup, same here... I was looking forward to probably hitting silver this year, but that does not look like a possibility now.
And for the record, as an exclusive it would have meant a slight royalty bump.

iPhone here.
Works OK, but slow to load as mentioned before.

I do use it to access the site when I am at my day job.
I would rather not have the IT snoops know how often I am on here  ;D

Personally I think some people try to get too technical about monitor calibration, if you intend to print your shots then it is essential to calibrate your monitor in association with your printer, but as this thread is titled 'Monitor calibration for Stock photos' the easiest and cheapest (free to be exact) way to do it is this:

Take a shot of a popular subject and upload it to any agency, then go to that agency and do a search so that your image shows up amongst many similar others, if your colours look OK you're done, if not adjust your monitor.

Tell the truth, Richard.
I'll bet you have the entire X-Rite color management suite ;)

Problem here too   :(

Virtually any monitor can be calibrated.
The hardware/ software calibration solutions will adjust the response curve of your graphics card to acheive calibration.

High end graphics monitors have built in look- up tables (LUT) and can be calibrated independantly from the graphics card in the computer.

Supposidly the latter is the superior method, though I have seen reviews saying that calibrating the graphics card instead provided better results.
