Cameras / Lenses / Re: Leica M60 - The limit of absurdity
« on: September 17, 2014, 08:14 »
Leica was great cameras (not so sure that is was so great without good lenses).
Today Leica is just a status symbol.
Technically I think that a  Lumix PANASONIC GM5 is better (and costs 20 times less)  ;)

sorry you're waaaaay wrong  ;)

i owned for 5 years a complete Leica M system (leica M6, Leica M9, summicron 35, summicron 90, elmarit 21mm), so i'm talking with some experience...Versability is the reason that led me to sold everything for a nikon system....not quality, AT ALL

Now i must REMEMBER two things:

- First: Leica M is made for and is limited to reportage and travel picture...don't have AF, no video, no timelapse,no zoom, no filter mount (no landscape photography)...but yes it's an outstanding camera for those works, and there is nothing to discuss about it.

-Second: About the price...Leica is NOT more expensive than all TOP DSLR camera from Canon and Nikon
Here Market prices:
Leica M: 6000 (warranty 5 years)
Nikon D4 (with 4 years warranty) 5400
Canon EOS 1dx 5450
Canon EOS 1dc 12000
I don't see big differences, you?....lens price? same just take a look to price list and compare prime Nikon/canon zooms vs Leica....

If nowdays is possible to live only on travel/wedding and news reportages, Leica still is THE camera....personally i can't, but this has nothing to deal with Leica quality

ps. Yes Leica makes many "snobby" cameras for collection...like the one in your link...btw their business lies also much on fat chinese/russian full of money :D

The Leica M's price isn't so crazy at 6000 euro but the M60's price at 16000 euro is a bit over the top

I'm all for a digital camera with no back.  I dreamed of having one a couple years ago.  I felt that if I was going to strip the digital camera down to the essentials, like a Leica nicely does, I may as well skip the screen as well and just focus on shooting like the old days.  That would be nice.  I'm not going to plop $20,000 on the table to do so however :)

Off Topic / Re: Apple Watch is magic
« on: September 13, 2014, 07:52 »
Do I want to be monitored by someone else? I know, I don't care about cameras, traffic or street or stores. NSA and FBI can read my mail, I don't mind, but would I willingly give an insurance company my data, so they could potentially raise my rates?

I think that this sort of health stat monitoring (including what we eat and drink) will become normal. Not just via Apple. Most people will ask why they should pay the same for their insurance as someone who is, say,  overweight, drinks too much, smokes or never takes exercise. I am not advocating this - but I think it will arrive gradually, inevitably. My guess is that it will typically be a scheme which you can join - which the insurance company will offer in return for lower rates.

What next, grocery store link to what we buy, reported via the phone, so they can track out eating habits? I'm not in favor. How about a car monitor that watches my driving habits and they raise my rates based on that.

Anyone who uses a store card, plastic or shops online is already contributing their buying habits to the data which is known about them and which is available to buy. Unless you constantly use cash that data can probably already provide good information about what you are eating. Cash is gradually being phased out.

and they can track where you walk in the store via your cellphone!

But... why hide the ads ;)
It decorates the forum and keeps the lights on here
I thought being a premium member covered my share of keeping the lights on, so I have no guilt about blocking ads here.

yes, point taken :)

just as a FYI as to why the StockTal ad might be showing up in when using and ad-block software.  These softwares generally block images from certain domain locations.  When the ads are hosted another place (photodune's ad, Canstock, Stocktal) you have to add them manually, in addition to the regular ads.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Liabilty?
« on: August 12, 2014, 02:58 »
Recently, one of agency/distributors I deal with received a claim in regards to a property image in my portfolio that I took several years ago (a bed and breakfast). The agent/distributor is requesting from me specific information about the shot. Can I be liable in any way for this claim? Just wondering.
Thanks

b&bs, hotels, across the continents  have a unique design or room color scheme, (bedsheets, curtains,etc).. even down to the folding style of their blanket-cover to eg in one hotel in North Africa, shape like a flower. To this point that everything in detail of that hotel is highly recognizable, i would say a PR is needed.
hopefully in your case, it is a generic design and not to this extensive identity.

Good luck getting a PR from the hotel!  Also any Vegas or Disney area- just leave the camera home...

I got a property release from a hotel once for a shoot - so it is possible.

A B&B is probably a lot more 'mom and pop' type shop and hopefully isn't as branded as say, a large chain hotel.

Symbiostock - General / Re: VAT Plugin ?
« on: August 10, 2014, 15:25 »
You could always find someone on odesk or freelancer to create it for you.  You could then sell it as your own plug-in.

411
And I made my first sale there today!  I won't post about them all (let's hope there are lots!) but just thought I'd indicate that the small store (only 8 items in it) had seen a sale (no one I know and I'm pretty hopeless at the promotion stuff :))

congrats Jo Ann, nice to hear it is selling

30% dl increase, 42% collection growth = 9% fewer sales per image, therefore you need to grow your portfolio 9% per quarter (about 40% per year) just to stand still, if my arithmetic is any good.

assuming all images sell the same.  If you upload images that sell more than 99% of the others then you will see growth even if you don't upload as many as you suggest.
The challenge 'simply' lies in uploading something better than the rest :)

414
I feel working when you want and getting paid when you aren't working are huge ones.  Being able to travel anywhere in the world and continue the work is also a huge plus.

PhotoDune / Re: I'm Done with Envato
« on: August 02, 2014, 15:57 »
Photodune has by far one of the easiest uploads.  I'm not sure how people are seeing it as complicated.

You upload all your images from shoot X in the images folder, upload all the releases from that shoot in the releases folder and press the process button.  Done.  no categories, no release matching to images, no clicking on every image.

Canva / Re: Canva not listed on the poll?
« on: August 02, 2014, 15:54 »
Yep, still here.  I moved back to Argentina a couple of months ago, but I'm still acting in the same capacity in regards to Canva.

Our revenue is growing super fast.  We started at zero a little under a year ago, and every month we've seen very pleasing gains, though we're still a very long way from the big, established microstock agencies.  We still have a relatively small collection, so the contributors who already have their content online with us are earning disproportionately well.  So far our revenue growth has kept pace with the growth of our collection so our early contributors haven't experienced much of a slowdown, but we're getting more and more new contributors with great portfolios now.

It'll be great to have Canva in the poll so we can start climbing the ladder.

If anyone has any questions, I'm happy to answer them here or by email, [email protected]

I knew you weren't far off :).  Thanks for jumping in.

Pond5 / Re: hundreds of sales today on P5/Pixmac
« on: July 31, 2014, 05:24 »
Hello artists,

Recently, some of you may have noticed some odd fluctuations in your sales reports. We discovered an issue in our system that was causing your Pond5 sales (via your Pixmac partner account) to not be reported. Once our team was made aware of the situation, they worked to fix the problem, correcting any errors. Unfortunately, during the repair process, another bug was triggered that incorrectly multiplied some users' sales. As of 7/30/14, 5:12pm EST, all the errors and bugs have been corrected. Sales reporting will occur properly now, and your current account balance is now also accurate. Any sales you see reported on your account at this time are accurate, and are legitimately your sales.

We would like to take a moment to apologize for the trouble and confusion caused by this. We take these issues very seriously, and we will be reviewing this case in its entirety, so that we can make whatever changes are necessary to ensure that nothing like this happens again.

We understand how something like this could cause lots of confusion and worry, so we want to be very open and honest about what happened, including any progress we make. We will follow this thread and reply with any new information we receive. If you have questions, we'll do our best to answer them, but please know you are welcome to write into us at [email protected] for the quickest response. Or please feel free to call Pond5 at +1(646)233-2155, between the hours of 10am and 8pm EST.

Thanks for the update

"Since many searches result in more returns than any customer has time to review, many customers have come to rely on the Most Popular search option. Their understanding has been that in a few pages they will see the images with a particular keyword that other customers have found most useful. That may no longer be true."

What "most downloaded" used to return was the images with a particular keyword sorted by downloads.  That isn't the same as images that other customers have found useful for a particular keyword sorted by downloads from that keyword.

exactly.  If I search for apple, I'll get the images that other people purchased when searching for apple.  Even if said apple image only has 100 downloads and the next image has 1000 downloads.  The second image could have gotten 950 downloads from a search term involving woman apple and only 50 downloads from just apple.  While the first image could have all 100 downloads on the search term apple.

I'm mystified why Leaf didn't mention it in the monthly roundup newsletter, I guess he's happy with it.

I think he has been communicated to by Fotolia. I think he has a big port there and cannot afford to lose that revenue stream. Remember, Fotolia is a vindictive company. Speak poorly of them and they go crying to mama....aka closing contributor accounts.

To be honest it just slipped my mind.  I try to collect popular/ important posts throughout the month and pick the top ones when I send out the newsletter but I always end up missing a few.
I did mention the Fotolia DPC in the previous newsletter.

I think we need a few more details.  Could it have been foap?

looking forward to it.  Ollyi has an incredible port.
