I am not really a Luddite but I will resist as long as I can without a cell phone . . . . . . please call me when I am home not when I am shopping!

More or less overnight they have turned blindly-loyal supporters into individuals actively trying to undermine them in every way possible.

Why o why?

The Scorpion and the Frog parable.
Quote
Halfway across the river, the frog suddenly felt a sharp sting in his back and, out of the corner of his eye, saw the scorpion remove his stinger from the frog's back. A deadening numbness began to creep into his limbs.
"You fool!" croaked the frog, "Now we shall both die! Why on earth did you do that?"
The scorpion shrugged, and did a little jig on the drownings frog's back.
"I could not help myself. It is my nature."
;D

LOL . . . . .  that parable also applies to Wall Street over the last decade . . . . I could not help myself. It is my nature.

Photography is a "hobby" for me and my tiny little port of 250 images at IS will not sway their decision, my REAL job is creative director for fortune 1000 co.
Not only do you have my support in no longer purchasing from IS (have about 50 credits that I'll spend this weekend so that some of you can get your 20% - and I'll buy nothing with a crown : P   ), but I'm pulling my port as well. It's only worth about $500 per year, but I'll feel better about myself. We also have monthly "designer meetings" (people from area design companies get together to suck down scotch and crab cakes) and I will take my 10 minutes of speech time to make sure that they're at least aware of this.

It's unfortunate that Wall-St found its way into MS

added: and even if all of this gets IS to modify or completely drop this plan, I'm done with them.

Thanks anonymous for the support.  If anything can make a difference then this kind of action could.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: iStock changing royalty structure
« on: September 07, 2010, 16:29 »
We will continue to pay out royalties based on the value of the credit purchased. In the case of royalties from Subscription credits we are adjusting the minimum value of the subscription credit from $0.95 to $0.65.

And for those opted into the sub plan it only gets worse.

Is that right?  So now a xs brings 9.7 cents.  Boy, that 25 cents from TS sure is looking Good. (irony)

« on: September 03, 2010, 11:52 »
It seems the problem has been fixed.

Email from DP:

Hello!

It seems we managed to find a bug and fix it: the problem was not in the
51 word but in the ' symbol; it broke the work of the Java Script and even
if there were only 10 keywords there would be nothing you could do with
them.
Now the problem is solved.

As for the word combination, we don't work with them as with the single
keyword, so "mode of transportation" will give you three keywords. The same
was here at DepositPhotos before changing the process of attributation.

Regards,
Michel

Fotolia has the same keyword-importance as far as I remember, right?

Its not the keyword-importance that I was referring to, but the problems with using "" with strings of keywords.  Also the inability to remove words is you go over the 50 limit, leaving the submission in limbo.

As to keyword-importance, well, I hate it with Fotolia and I will hate it at DP . . . .  just takes too much time.

DepositPhotos / Re: Keyword sorting on Deposit Photos
« on: September 02, 2010, 13:13 »
I would suggest not submitting to DP until they work out the bugs in the new keywording.  First, any string of words with "" is read as separate words . . .  even the ' in ship's caused problems leaving the word as ship' and the next word as "s".  Second, if you should enter more then 50 words and get the warning that you have provided too many keywords it becomes impossible to remove any of the keywords effectively leaving the file in limbo . . .  too many words and unable to cancel the submission or remove any words.

A big improvement over at DP . . . . NOT!

BME for SS, IS, DT, GLO . . . . . . . . . . zeros for FP, YAY, 3dS, CS.  What does that tell me?  At least for me its a bi-polar world.

New Sites - General / Re: The 3D Studio - anyway selling there?
« on: August 03, 2010, 07:25 »
With 721 files not one sale, repeat zero . . . . . I guess that says 3DS is the wrong place for me.

PS . .  no vectors or 3D renders in my port.

And many businesses are keeping cash fearing a double dip recession. They are not hiring, they are not spending, they are waiting to see if the economy is really going to grow and at what rate in the near future.

So:

nervous recession (recovery) + summer time + more contributors + bloated collections = slow until happy times are here again

Randomway

I click on the link to your image (great stuff) and found that you use Keywords with "", if you click on one of these you get this:

An Error Was Encountered

The URI you submitted has disallowed characters.

I guess GLO doesn't like these characters, you may want to Edit your Keywords.  This is also new to me so I will also have a look at mine.

Don't we have it good with a few Flash Cards and a battery charger.

Not really. I would very much like to carry around that much stuff (especially with a car!) to create some stunning unique photos. (Instead of the gazillion mediocre snapshots that people create all the time)

Or a good mule like Ansel had when he started . . . . . . I read later he had an eight-passenger limousine with 5 x 9-foot camera platform on top.

This subject is about exhausted but I thought this was interesting:

Historian Robert Taft listed nineteenth-century landscape photographer William Henry Jackson's typical photo gear for a summer's travels in his 1938 book, Photography and the American Scene. Jackson carried:

2 or 3 cameras for different size lenses
lenses and plate holders for each camera
2 tripods
dark tent or darkbox
10 pounds collodion
2 pints alcohol
1 pint ether
1/4 pound each ammonium iodide and ammonium bromide
1/4 pound each cadmium iodide and cadmium bromide
3 pounds silver nitrate
10 pounds ferrous sulfate
1-1/2 pounds potassium cyanide
6 ounces nitric acid
1 quart varnish
package of filter papers
canton flannel and rottenstone
3 negative boxes
processing trays
various bottles for chemicals
scales and weights
400 pieces of glass

Don't we have it good with a few Flash Cards and a battery charger.

With the ignorance of many of the stock site reviewers at Istock, Crestock and Veer, those photos, if they were submitted, would probably be rejected for lighting (because they are in black and white) and composition. If it were possible for someone to go photograph these places with the exact same conditions and same composition, then submit them, it sure would be interesting to see what the results would be.

You would need a large format camera, not the DSLR equipment most of us are using. These negatives are from a 6-1/2 x 8-1/2 inch glass plate camera.  That is a BIG negative with LOTS of information!

Never mind about the camera, is there any room for a model (models).
A little duck. Model's hands under the fabric at the back to do hand shoots. Actually Nikola, it's all your fault since I was jealous at your product shots.  :P

Veer / Re: Free 25 Veer Credits
« on: July 29, 2010, 13:26 »
Brian,
Can you explain why some people in the US did not get free credits and some did?
Thanks.

Also, does Veer have a contributors forum? If so, I couldn't find it.

Hi Cathy -

I chatted with a colleague in our Marketing department on why this particular customer promotion went to some users and not others:

---
Yes, different people were targeted to receive different promotions.
That being said, not all the emails have gone out yet, you might still hear from us.

We have plenty of offers for everyone and we sometimes target specific groups of our customers with specific promotions and other groups with other promotions.
---

We do have a group on Veer Ideas where you can post questions or comments:
http://ideas.veer.com/group/marketplace

- Brian

Thanks Brian. I have not bought from veer before, but earlier posts from contributors say they are not buyers but received the credits. I am only registered as a contributor. Not sure if buying requires a separate registration anyway?

Thanks for the link to the forum. I know I have been there before, but could not find when I went hunting this time.

Cathy

Are you sure you didn't get the credits?  Its shown at the very top of your Dashboard page, easy to overlook.  Anyway, I have received the credits and I am in Germany (but with a Billing Address in Maryland), and only a contributor.
