A few more thoughts... A) Are you solving a problem that you have? Is it an itch that you NEED to scratch? B) Think in terms what is in it for the various stake holders, contributors, customers. What do they get out of it that they can't get somewhere else with less effort? C) There are always nay sayers, the college professor once told a college student that over night delivery of packages across the country was a stupid idea, that college student eventually launched Fedex. D) Sometimes it is just being at the right place at the right time. That is what a lot of very successful entrepreneurs say about their success. E) If it is a superior product, it is never too late to launch it.
I'm not saying you should go ahead and built this thing out, more just giving you thoughts to think about.
All good points. Part of the reason I thought I'd ask. If the majority of people here just complained/whined, then might not be worth the time/effort... (so far that seems to be the case).
Funny thing - not one person has yet asked any of my original questions, which were:
a) Images? Video? b) $29/month? $59/month? $99/month? More? Less? c) Features you'd want? d) What would you pay for 'marketing' of your content? e) What is your portfolio size? (100 items? 1000? 10000?)
Got a lot of poo-pooing...
The only really constructive comments so far have been by you & one other person...
I don't think people giving their honest opinion is complaining/whining. Having asked a question and not liking the answer people give however might be.

.. So I was wondering if essentially 'owning' your own site that was as easy as creating an account would be appealing.
always promised, never realized
I will give some thought to the marketing aspect though - just as I was writing this had an idea that might be appealing, going to think about it to see if it would work...
are you saying you HAVEN'T yet given 'some thought' to marketing!??! and you wonder why no one takes your proposal seriously .
The original question was with respect to setting up the site itself, nothing to do with marketing. As an aside though, something occurred to me that might work marketing wise as well.
Th e suceess of any venture in this arena is probably 95% marketing and 5% IT.

I think it's the suddenness and longevity of the drought that is throwing some producers for a loop, I do video and it's been at least six days on SS since I had a sale as well but one came in today, could always be worse, could be pond5 and zero sales for longer than six days. .
it's not sudden -- sales have been declining for more than a year
People have been reporting falling sales for the 7 years I've been on this site. The trend is accelerating and some will buck it but on average sales will decline.

I really dont see this is a bad thing at all - i'd love them to reintroduce technical checks for photos and similars. All i ask is they do it with a degree of consistency.
From comments I read here on msg back in the day, I don't think consistency was ever their strong suit.
Things are relative ;-). We can only dream at that level of "inconsistency" now.

Its causing a meltdown on their forum from people who werent on SS in the days they actually had standards who are now faced with the terrifying thought of having to spend some time and extra effort selecting and editing only their best photos (and who cant grow the library exponentially any more).

Glad to hear it even if they only removed the most "extreme" examples of similars there would be millions. I've seen people complaining on Shutterstock's Facebook page about being rejected for focus. I submit stuff now that I wouldn't have dreamt of sending a few years back.

Until they stop reporting the sheer number of images as a Key Indicator I doubt it.

I really can't imagine you'd find four people, let alone 4,000. It's really hard to get buyers. And then once they download everything, they quit.
You might be right. I have no way of finding out without actually going through with it. And I've already said I'm pretty reluctant to test the waters given how much my income would drop if I cancel the exclusive contact.
Over a 6 month period this year, I've sold about 30,000 images. People obviously like my stuff enough to download them.
The idea I'm thinking about here is more or less exactly how Shutterstock started out.
Yes and when they started they had one competitor.

Why u upload there? Don't get it
I dot, because it has a higher rpd tan other agencies. The same as SS, for example
Enviado desde mi LYA-L29 mediante Tapatalk
For me its less than SS similar to Adobe and more than most of the tiddlers. RPD doesn't matter to me total earnings does and in this they are normally third.

I do wonder if these redesigns of the interface is done to hide the lack of sales. Both SS and DT seem to have come up with maybe prettier but way less useful new "improved" designs.
As far as I can tell there is no way that an actual user was consulted in these redesigns - or if they were consulted they ignored their input.
IT people have to show the are doing something...spending time working on the resilience and reliability of the basic applications is difficult and boring with nothing to show the board. An IT student can design a new front end in an afternoon..and it looks like they did...only it was a failed student ;-).

Hi all. I sometimes receive emails from Deposit photos saying I sold some images. The thing is they always show that i've sold 3 in the messages, always 3. This has been going on for years. They are a poor earner for me so I've never really paid much attention to it. What has your experience been? Any input regards this?
The same thing happens to me. However, whether I sell more than three or not in a day, the email never shows more than three. You need to check the stats page to find out how many actually sold.
I guess their system isn't designed for exceptional events like selling more than three images on there in a day ;-)

I am looking to buy a professional camera. Looking at the reviews on youtube added more confusion.
Mirrorless camera? are they worth buying or shall I opt for traditional one?
Which one should I go with in long run?
You will get a whole host of opinion in truth the likes of Nikon, Canon and increasingly Sony produce great cameras who their fans will all consider infinitely superior. Really they all have relatively minor strengths and weaknesses that are relevant to your precise requirements. I like DP reviews as an information site. I think Mirrorless is just at the tipping point where it might be a good option.

That's an "issue"? But for what it's worth, no, my reports from DP vary from day to day. Sometimes three. Sometimes one. Sometimes two. They're low on the totem pole but they've always been a consistent, steady seller for me. I think when buyers are looking for something less "mainstream" they seek out images from less popular agencies.
Yes, they are steady sellers and I keep uploading there. But less mainstream, i don't think so, those are the same pictures like everywhere else, the same contributors uploading the same batches. What I don't like is their blog they send to contributors. It is written by some arrogant teenagers that don't have a clue about stock photography, constantly making a joke out of the genre. Like it is a cliche, it should be more realistic and artsy. And it comes from Depositphotos which is a synonymous for cheap stock?! And they send it to contributors, laughing to their faces?! Written by some momy's and daddy's girls, that never had to make a living from stock photography?! It is complete disaster, unprofessional and idiotic. https://blog.depositphotos.com/stock-photo-cliches.html?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=blog_digest_august19_sel&utm_term=button1&utm_content=en https://blog.depositphotos.com/test-which-stock-photography-cliche-are-you.html https://depositphotos.com/reinventing
Fortunately I've never received that blog. I would say DP is where I sell my dullest most cliched stock images most. Though I sell there quite rarely I often find Dreamstime sell what I regard as my more interesting and varied stuff.

What that says to me is that in addition to filling the collection with image spam, the growth in purchases is slowing, both providing pressure on income of existing contributors.
there is an existing image for every buyer and many more than needed.
Not necessarily but working what these are and producing them at a cost that can generate a profit are the two challenges that are getting harder everyday.

They recommend 5-15 keywords I'm not sure they have it as an actual rule. Canstock are well known for their bizarre rejections.
It may only be a recommendation, but they used it as a justification for my rejections.
No worries, as although it's annoying, it is Canstock, and having images approved doesn't generally change the bottom line!
They've pretty much rejected everything I've submitted since, so I am within a hair's breadth of pulling my port anyway.
I've not had that..I certainly won't waste time editing down my keywords if they start doing this. The only reason I submit there is its zero effort.

I actually agree what you are saying is true. You have a choice though you can carry on knowing it won't change or stop doing something that makes you unhappy and find something else. I do what I do because it makes my happy when that ends I will do something else. Theres nothing special about being a photographer over history millions of people have faced the same dilemma. Stage coach makers either started making cars and become millionaires or wrote pamphlets complaining how unfair it was and think how portrait artists felt when cameras came long.

Slide 5 tells you all you need to know from a contributor standpoint. Number of customers +2% number of contributors +100%. Number of Images up 37% downloads up 3%.
On a positive note, my bet is that most of these new contributors will never have more than 10 images in their port and remain small fish. The ones we have to fear are experienced contributors who set up image factories and are churning out thousands of images a week.
in the east europe they are popping out every day 2 3 factory, in belgrade there are literally hundred of them who use the same model, there is a model agency specialized in stock with 100 model who practically you can find in any serbian factory...russia the same and ukraine even more...cost of production are ridiculous and cost of living a third of europe...in case ukraine even less outside kiev...how can we compete with these factory if a shooting cost minimum 400 euro and living is super expensive? impossible. that's why most of contributor even in stocksy are coming from eastern euroep....thousand model ready to shoot for 8 dollar hour, studio equipped with profit light at 8 dollar hour rent....most employ 3 4 photographer paid pennies and producing thousand of photo every week.
No you can't compete if you produce directly comparable content...what makes you think you have some kind of right to? stock is a global industry.
nobody said i have some special right. i just explained why contributor in western emispeher will struggle to survive...like olfactory in western europe who close due to chinese competition. but you cant understand, you live of photography?
You don't have to live off photography to understand it...just have a basic understanding of Economics and History to see the same thing has happened to hundreds of industries over hundreds of years. Eastern Europe is in the Western hemisphere by the way. You give the impression you somehow resent people who come from countries with a lower standard of living and compete on price.
i don' t resend ...i am telling and explain gin why our revenue are falling down and why you can't compete if you live in a richer country with much les infrastructure for modeling and stock photography. you shoot lifestyle? model content? if not please avoid commenting.
When did you take over the forum? I gave up shooting models as I couldn't compete in that market maybe you should consider doing the same or live with it and stop whining. You might even find that when you look back on the day you stopped banging your head against a brick wall and found a more lucrative way of using your talents as one of your happiest days and thank me for it.

There must be some truth in that as my earnings are holding up better than you might expect. However its very rare for any of my new content to sell let alone sell enough to move up the rankings.

Why no mention of "OFFSET"?
It's interesting that there is no discussion of the quality of the collection just size...truly treated as just a commodity.
What are the chances they will take their policy on similars seriously when one of the key metrics is growth of the collection? Only when they drop this figures as a headline will it change.
