123RF and StockXpert offer the ability to download your own images.

Good luck.

PayPal has already "authorized" most of us, so I'm not sure why they feel like they need to as well.

Chad from Fotolia.com has responded on another microstock forum about this issue.  Here is his response:

"Hello Everyone,

I have been reading your comments about our recent increased security measures and I wish to address this issue with you today.

As you know Fotolia has grown into a large international business. We deal with millions of transactions each month. Many of the world's top advertising and design agencies come to Fotolia for their image needs. These companies place their trust in us to provide high-quality, legal content.

It is our desire to continue to build this trust with our buyers, which will of course benefit our contributors. One way of doing this is to truly know who we are doing business with. We unfortunately do not have the luxury of face to face relationships. Providing a photo ID helps us verify your information and helps us build trust in our suppliers.

Of course, there are very real concerns over the possibility of identity theft. To clarify, the scanned copies of our contributor identifications are stored in a secure database, accessible by only a select few of Fotolia employees for use in confirming identification for security purposes, much like a bank or HR department. This information is not stored on your public profiles and will not be used for anything other than identity verification.

Tax id numbers are required for US members who earn over $600 in one year this is the law and it will not change. The Photo ID requirement is a global requirement and is completely unrelated to the Tax id.
We feel it is our duty to protect our members' identities, images, and credits. We feel this additional information will help us to defend against suspicious activities that have been rumored at other companies within our industry. We need to know who we are doing business with and we feel adding the increased security measures of a photo ID not only protect us and our buyers but it will also protect you. This requirement is not new to the industry and has become common practice at other agencies.

To those who supplied false or altered government IDs to Fotolia - this is a clear violation of state and Federal laws. Providing a false or altered government ID for the purpose of monetary gain is considered fraud. We urge you to consider and think of the serious consequences you face for this illegal behavior, as Fotolia will report illegal activities to the appropriate authorities.

I hope this gives you some additional information about our recent changes, but this requirement will not change.

Chad Bridwell
Director of US Operations

General - Stock Video / Re: Canon 5D Time Lapse
« on: February 26, 2008, 07:16 »
I would be very cautious about using a 5D for time lapse video.  It can be a very expensive proposition.

If I remember correctly, the 5D has a shutter life of 100,000 clicks.  That would be used up very quickly by doing time lapse video.  For example, a 30 second video clip at 30 fps would be 900 images.  If you only shoot ten (10) 30-second videos, then you have just used up 9,000 shutter cycles or almost 10% of your camera's estimated life.

I'm totally agree with your thoughts on this Madelaide, but unfortunately DT treats such threads with an iron fist.

Anyone want to guess how many posts it will be before the thread on DT is locked?

I will guess that it will be locked once DT gets up in the morning.

Zymmetrical.com / Re: Extended License : What am I missing ?
« on: February 25, 2008, 17:44 »
As is mostly the case, it has to do with money.

When a person wants to purchase an extended license, it means that they want to resell the image on an item (like a t-shirt, mouse pad, coffee mug, etc) or that they want to increase usage (for web templates or publications with large subscription bases).

Many people feel that this sort of usage should command a much higher price.

For example, say that a company buys an image to use on a web templates and then sells the template for $100.  They then sell 100 templates and make $10,000.  Is it fair that the artist only received $25?

Or take another example, say that a company produces bedsheets and buys an image of flowers that they print on the sheets.  They then sell the sheet set for $100 and sell 1,000s of sets.  Is it fair that the artist only makes a small amount in comparison to what the company made?

Of course, the other side of the argument is that we are already selling our images royalty free and somebody could use an image over and over and we still only get $0.30 - $5.00.

It just depends where you draw the line.

I would suggest allowing an opt-in option (as opposed to an opt-in option).  This way, those that are interested could opt-in if they are interested.

Software - General / Re: When you transfer ...
« on: February 25, 2008, 15:40 »
I transfer images via a card reader specifically because I don't trust the USB connector.  It seems a little too flimsy for me.

This technique also allows me to check images on my computer if I am taking still life shots and the camera is setup on a tripod.  I can take a few shots, take out the card, insert the card into the reader, check the image, and then make any necessary adjustments - all without moving the camera or tripod.

I should have bought Friday

And sold today.

Cameras / Lenses / Re: New Canon patent, watermarking images
« on: February 22, 2008, 08:38 »
I saw this previously, but I'm not sure how much it would help with anything besides an editorial image.  In other words, once you edit your image, I'm sure that the watermark/registration mark is gone.

Off Topic / Re: gumgum.com
« on: February 21, 2008, 13:45 »
I don't see this taking off because most buyers want to edit the images that they buy.  With gumgum you have to take the image as-is, which is mostly good for editorial but not much else.

Along with everyone else, I would like to offer you my congratulations.

It is obvious that, along with your great eye for photography, you have some awesome Photoshop skills.

I am glad to see that you have done so well on IS, especially since they don't seem to normally like highly edited images.  This is one area that I wish would change on IS, since I believe that they are missing out on a lot of potential sales.

It seems that they have launched their footage section.

Anyone else having this issue?

I also have illustrations and 3D pictures at XXL size

But I don't think that you can create illustrations or 3D images with a camera  ;)

BTW, you have some great images!

going from 8Mp to 12Mp is indeed interesting for a microstock contributor as the commission is higher for larger photos.

You may consider purchasing the 450D instead of the 400D for that sole reason: 12Mp is enough for a XL license at IS while 10Mp is not: this is a 50% increase in earnings!

With all due respect, I think that this point is quite overblown.  Less than 2% of all of my sales are for an XLarge size at IS.  Most (> 85%) of my sales are derived from XSmall -> Medium sales.  A Medium size image at IS is 2 MP!  A large size image at IS is 5 MP!

Granted, others might have more XLarge sales than me, but I doubt that they are dramatically different.

If I were strapped for cash, I wouldn't spend the extra money for a few more % of sales.  Especially since larger images have a higher likelihood of being rejected for artifacts or noise.

I had not heard of the Rebel Xsi. I wonder if that's a 450D? in Europe when it comes out?

Yes, the XSi is the same as the 450D.  As far as I know, it hasn't hit the stores yet.

You can read about the XSi here:

Any other comments about using the 400D / Rebel XTI's for my first body are welcomed ...

I think that the 400D is a great camera to start with.  It is 10 MP and has almost the exact same chip as the 40D, but for a fraction of the cost ($520 vs $1150).  If you are strapped for cash, then you might want to consider the 350D which is 8 MP ($400).

I heard that a Kiss rockstar "? name" have copyrighted the orange.

Actually the rumor is that Gene Simmons (from the rock band Kiss) patented the word "O.J" (as in orange juice), but I don't think that you can patent a word.  They might have meant trademark, but either way I'm not sure how true it is.

Crestock.com / Re: What is your acceptance rate at Crestock ?

I will never understand why people will work so hard for a 20% commission, especially from a site that has such low sales.

What is really funny is that the tags "BMW", "Ferrari", "Jaguar" (Car Manufacturers' Brand Names), etc. still exist.  You would think that they would get rid of the tags first, so that you couldn't search for those images.

I always found it funny that they don't want images of brand name products, yet their own tagging system contains them.  Kleenex, Boeing, Pepsi, McDonalds, etc. are all there.

« on: February 18, 2008, 17:35 »
I just checked my most popular image and have found the same issue.

It shows a total of 90 downloads, but when I add up each of the "versions" they total 92 sales.

I wonder where the difference is?

I have noticed that many of the latest/newest images that are submitted already have ratings before anyone even views them.  How does that happen?

For example, check here and you will see many of the images already have a score at the bottom of the thumbnail:

http://www.mostphotos.com/search.php?querytype=latest&orderby=imgdate&periodlimit=-1

Anyone know how the scores are calculated?

Photo Critique / Re: Stock suitable
« on: February 13, 2008, 14:08 »
Really nice image! I would give it a try, you have nothing to loose. Maybe they will take it if you submit it without the frame.

On some sites there is a penalty for rejections.  For example, on DT, placement in the Best Match results is partly a function of acceptance rate.  So submitting experimental shots can have a negative aspect to it on some sites.
