Well in my opinion when a lot of businesses can survive on 50% profit margin, then iStock should be able to survive on less , simply because all those other businesses.(not stock) also have to purchase an inventory....not pay for it after the fact.

Quote by Lee Torrens "The primary goal of the shoot was to quickly generate a large volume of images to drive up the quality of photos in the Veer microstock offering."
I don't quite understand this when there are thousands of photos sitting and waiting to be approved. I'm sure there are lots of quality photos already there which would probably cover much of the demand.

Congrats....I'm glad you made it... BTW...Lisa is correct about the black and white photos. They look great and I personally like black and white because of the impact it can have, but it does limit the saleability.

Same as tomasfoto....I've had a total of 4 sales since I joined with the dash for cash. Same shots...good sales everywhere else, just not there. I have the same problem with 123RF. I've got 30 pics sitting in the pending pen since Oct 16th. I just don't upload any more, same as 123RF.

I'd go with the mother reading to the children and the isolation of the guitar. As far as a third one goes...I don't know. It is hard to get florals or sunsets accepted any more because of the over saturation of those categories. Maybe the Toronto skyline in winter? They pretty much like a variety. You've got the model shot and isolation covered, but need to find a landscape that works...(not sunset) or food shot..something like that.

I've just had my first week at SS and have 29 sales with 32 files - reviews are reasonable and find that stuff is reviewed AND sold before even approved on DT / rejected by IS
Looked at your dreamstime port...very impressed. I really liked it. You got a very unique style and I can understand why you'd have good sales right off the bat.

Seems to me no response to e-mail....no response to concerns voiced on here....I'd say run the other way. That's all I have to say.

Do you have more of a variety of images. iStock likes to see different types, such as a model shot, a food shot ect ect. They aren't real big on landscapes any more unless they really pop. They are saturated with the types of landscapes you have...other than the city shot...and even though yours are better than many, they don't usually accept them because of that fact. Also so your aware of this....just because you get the initial photos accepted, that doesn't mean they will always make it on the site to begin with.

Thanks for the advice. I'm going to go and separate them while the port is fresh. Personally I'm going to separate them by royalty free, editorial, and RM. That way when people click on that Pseudonyms for more like that, they won't have to dig through a massive portfolio to find them.
sounds like good plan
BTW...
Create Lightboxes for clients and Assign Pseudos based on maximizing Alamy Rank and separate identity trails to images different in meaningful way.
When signed in, one finds Lightbox feature at bottom of Home-My Alamy: https://secure.alamy.com/my-account.asp
Do you think naming Pseudos with the subject matter as part of it helps any? I mean for a certain subject...not royalty free or rights managed just certain subjects.

Now that will be a nightmare since just about everyone gets paid through paypal from the stock agencies and I doubt the IRS will listen and with the track record these microstocks have for dealing with 1099's, I doubt they will listen either!!

I am taking a Photography I class. We're shooting with a black and white film camera, developing the film ourselves and printing ourselves. I have to say that I have reaffirmed my love for photography (not microstock) in addition to learning a lot of things.
It's nice to go back to the basics every now and then. I did it in college and loved it. I did the balck and white with the developing. I never did the color which is a totally different developing process from what I understand. There is no way better to display an impact than with black and white photography. I'm glad you've been doing what you love. As to the motivation part....well it's hard to be but I love what I do and have been concentrating on other avenues of stock. I love taking pictures and I love those people shots so I'll continue to do it rather it's for microstock or just for myself.

Incidentally, I use a freeware image viewer called "FastStone Image Viewer" which does a really good job of rendering images into CMYK colorspace and LZW compression. I use PSP 12 to have the image ready in RGB colorspace then do the CMYK conversion using FastStone, works like a charm. I never liked how PSP did the CMYK conversion.
Thanks for that advice eppic. I always have trouble with the color after saving to CMKY Tiff. Some of the colors are so blown out they look really bad. So those go to the delete bin... I'm going to check out that software.

Shutterstock is sometimes hard to get through. It usually takes three sometimes four to get approved. I was on all other stock sites before I even got my foot in the door at Shutterstock. Just send them a very good variety and don't give up.
As for your port at Dreamstime....it's very nice. One thing though is that several of the stock agencies....not all...but they don't accept cropped shots of people because they consider them bad composition even though they aren't. SO you might want to start shooting a little farther out as far as your models are concerned. The one with the boy amongst the leaves is a good shot, but you know what....if he was throwing the leaves up with a look of joy on his face would be good also. You might want to take him back and shoot another one with him doing just that. Just don't give it and keep trying. Variety is always helpful...not just landscapes.
Oh by the way I love the foggy one and the flower in the little girls hand. Those are beautiful shots!

Each pseudonym has a separate rank, a pseudo's rank will improve due to sales and zooms, and each new pseudonym starts out with an average "middle of the road" rank, so it's good to keep that in mind when assigning pseudo to new images or when considering changing an image's pseudo - if you use more than one.
I didn't realize that. I wondered what the purpose of that was and I only have one. So would it be beneficial for me to go back and create a new one and separate my RM from the RF with the pseudonym? I can go back and chance those can't I?

I didn't know you could attach any metadata to a video file. How exactly do you do this? My understanding was that you have to send a separate file for this.
Whoops I misunderstood...I thought the OP was talking about photos. I don't do video so I have no idea.

I personally use ProStockMaster for just key-wording...not all the other bells and whistles it comes with. A lot of people use different programs and some prefer one over the other, but ProStockMaster is free.

If you get a warning, always go to the site from your bookmarks. Chances are, your account has no been closed and the email is just phising for information.
That's always what I do.....especially the ones from E-bay. I actually had a e-mail from E-bay from a customer wanting to know how much shipping would be to XXXXX. I didn't have anything for sale on there. When I went to my account someone had put a bike for sale under my account. I was able to get it taken care of and changed my password, but I still get e-mails that say that and I always go to my account to make sure nothing is for sale on there. Usually those kind of e-mails go to my junk mail folder, but not always.

It would be wonderful if there was a union or advocate for our interest but the people on this forum are a very small fraction of the total of contributors on iStock. With the large amount on there, if all the "union" members would leave because their demands weren't met, it wouldn't be any skin off their backs. There are plenty more to replace them.

Until now I have not got any rejection from Alamy. The smallest sizes I have submitted were about 6 MP (cropped out of a 8,2 MP photo) before upsizing.
Before I got a Macro lens I would have to crop to do away with the dead space. These sometimes fall under the 24MB. I'm uploading old images to them now and I find out which ones are to small when they are rejected on the upload screen. It's faster than going through each image to see if the are 24MB...

The only way I have found to get isolations accepted is to shoot them that way in studio. Then it takes practically no effort to just dodge out any stray areas of gray. They don't sell well enough to justify spending a lot of time on cutting something out of a location, IMO, even if they would be accepted.
That's the way I do it....not in the early days though. I'd spend hours trying to isolate an image. It's easy if you shoot it on a white background then dodge out the bad areas.

I think a lot of people get thrown off by the term 24MB. If I'm not sure if a cropped image will work I go to photoshop and click on the image size to see if it meets the 24MB size and if it doesn't I upsize it til it is. If no cropping has been done then you don't have to worry about it.

Passing along this information to you.
Most of all the information that after 20 years of a quite public Usenet/Internet there are still people who believe in every crap they get via email and have nothing better to do than spreading this crap even further. OMG, that's already AOHell generation 2. Me too. Send pics. *yawn*
At least he had the courtesy of passing it on, rather it was real or not. Have you ever been expecting a package from FED EX then you get one of the bogus FED EX spam e-mails? Well some times you don't know rather it is legitimate or not if you are actually expecting a package. Let it go....

A big fat ZERO here. I don't have luck with 123RF. I've been on there since early 09 and have made a grand total of 40 sales. Sitting with $34.74. Same shots as the rest of the agencies but very few sales. I'll be pulling out as soon as I hit payout which will probably take another year!
