Brian: I am a little confused. I was expecting a list titled "Most Viewed Portfolios" to contain portfolios that consist of images that were viewed many times. But that is not what I found. For example, take the second artist on the list. As reported above, they have 27 images, their most viewed image was viewed 26 times, and all of their images were viewed a total of about 350 times. One of my most popular images has over 1,000 views alone ( http://www.luckyoliver.com/photo/91556/close-up_macro_of_water_drop_blue). So how is this list defined?

I just did a quick analysis and found two things:
1. The percentage of subscription sales (as a % of total sales) will vary from one artist to the next.
For example, my overall subscription sales runs about 8% overall, but my referral's subscription sales run about 22% overall. This confirms my initial suspicions. It makes sense that certain images would be prime targets for subscriptions, especially those that buyers would want to purchase in the Maximum size and that have had lots of sales (and are thus at higher levels and cost).
2. Subscriptions sales (as a % of total sales) seem to be on the increase.
Subscriptions began just before the 2Q07. In the first month or so, I would think that sales would have been low (since the word would have to get out). I ran an analysis by quarter and found that subscriptions are on the increase.
My subscription sales rates (as a % of total sales) were as follows:
2Q07: 6% 3Q07: 6% 4Q07: 11%
This was also confirmed by my referrals subscription sales
2Q07: 20% 3Q07: 14% 4Q07: 27%

I can not advertise my images (do not have time for that), so featurepics are out of game.
IMO, sites that give a 70% royalty should be supported by all artists. The only way that buyers will go to FP (in mass), is if they have lots of quality images. The only way that FP can achieve a library of 1 or 2 million quality images, is if all of the artists join them.

Thanks, but no thanks.

For those of you that shoot isolated objects, you might find these products interesting: http://www.ortery.com/products/products2.aspBasically, you put an object in their automated "light box" and you can take photos of the objects. The light box and camera are controlled via a computer in real time. Unfortunately, you can't use a dSLR with it at this time.

Interestingly enough, DT has added a new feature that will show you the keywords used for an image that was purchased. At first glance, this seems to be a very useful feature. Although, it won't help if you don't have good keywords in the first place. Here are the details: http://www.dreamstime.com/thread_8968What do you guys think about this?

Why do all of the Fotolia links contain your username?

Yuri:
May I ask how many searches were in the research data that you based your findings from?
This will give us a better idea of how good the results are.
I'm not doubting your research, just wondering what sort of data you are basing the result on.
Also, your link for SS is incorrect. When I clicked on it, it doesn't show any images. It seems that you are using your username instead of the SS ID.

My understanding, is that most microstock sites will reject an image that is keyworded as "isolated", unless it is cutout via the pen in Photoshop or some other technique. IS has stated that they "will be more rigorous in our inspection of isolated product shots" (see http://www.istockphoto.com/article_view.php?ID=392).

IMHO, it is because they are more like a "raw" image. The client could not only scale them, but change color, change shapes, remove/add other objects, etc. Thus, they can end up with many more versions from only one image.
In a way, it would be more like selling the client a RAW photo format (instead of a JPG).

Here is a reply from Chad (Fotolia Director of US Operations) that was on another forum: Hello Everyone,
I see that Fotolia's recent launch of the Infinite Collection has been the topic of much discussion here and on other forums. I would like to try and share our vision of the benefits we think these changes will bring in time.
The last few years we have learned a lot from our buyers. Even though Fotolia offers amazing images as low as $1 some buyers still shop elsewhere. As a result Fotolia started to think how we may bring in those same images that attracte buyers at other sites thus also attracting buyers that are still not Fotolia customers. This is how the idea of the Infinite collection started. In this way we can offer buyers a variety of quality and price points, however still 10 times lower than the traditional pricing. So for us it is a marketing tool to attract and keep buyers on the Fotolia website and allow them to choose the right image for their needs. If the buyer finds 2 images of equal quality but different price, of course they will select the less expensive ones. At the end of the day it is the buyer who will decide.
If you will also remember, Fotolia was the first to introduce the ranking system allowing photographers to earn more commission and raise prices based on the sales of their photos. Many excellent photographers have quickly risen through the ranks and are earning a lot of money with Fotolia. With the introduction of the Infinite Collection we have added one more privilege to the ranking system by allowing Emerald and higher ranked artists to submit images to the Infinite Collection. Based on our current sales and future marketing efforts we anticipate that many more artists will quickly reach Emerald status, thus potentially providing everyone an opportunity to participate in the Infinite Collection.
We are only trying to offer a balanced solution that raises the long term price/earnings of contributors and provides great value to buyers without proposing for example, a micro subscription model that pulls down prices to 25 cents an image, decreases the overall business, and only provides short term sales benefits. People who bought images for 25 cents per image will not buy the same ones for 1 to 10 dollars.
In concern to quality I must admit that some of the infinite images are not as great as anticipated but these agencies are taking a risk with us and it is hard to convince them to sell only their best images 10 times cheaper than normal. That being said we will correct that and we will have only the best images from the best agencies and artists.
So you can see, our efforts are only designed to bring in more clients in general and enable artists for the best earnings over time. Fotolia is constantly innovating and we ask for your support while we gain experience and adapt a few things as required. In the end we believe this will provide tremendous opportunities for both buyers and artists at all levels. We will continue to monitor everything very closely and of course will adapt if we feel it appropriate.
I also want to wish you all a happy holidays

To earn $5000/month, which would put me in the average amount of $$ earned for people living in Norway.
Wow, you guys must be rich up in Norway! The median household income for a whole FAMILY in the U.S. is around $48,000/yr. (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Household_income_in_the_United_States).

I always downsize my images to 4MP for 123rf, SS and LO (LO before I stop to upload there...)
I understand why most people downsize for SS (because they are a subscription only site), but why for 123RF and LO?

OK, here is a stretch...
Going with the "papa" (aka father) theme, maybe they are relating clouds to heaven and God the father! So they think of a synonym for father, and they come up with "papa" and they misspell the plural of the word as "pappas".
I know that it is unlikely, but weirder things have happened.
I'm not sure if I should report this typo to the sites, since if someone was searching for my images they would end up seeing these instead.

Can someone tell me what the word "Pappas" has to do with clouds?
ha ha ha haha ha ha... Well George, it's like this... (this is a talk your dad should have had with you a long time ago) There are different clouds, mommy clouds and daddy clouds.. sometimes called momma clouds and pappa clouds... .... and they get together.... and make bebe clouds... wait... maybe I better send you a personal IM on this... LOL !! =tom
Tom, thanks for the comic relief. That was hilarious. But I still can't figure out what "Pappas" and clouds have to do with each other. For example, check out these images on DT: http://www.dreamstime.com/search.php?srh_field=pappasAnybody?
