« on: August 08, 2006, 01:07 »
The sweet irony decided to get up early 4.30am to get some photos of the sunrise from the highest point (not very good only a sliver of sky between horizon and extensive clouds) so went to get some photos of a deserted city centre and got stopped by the police for obviously looking suspicious.

I explained I was a photographer waving my camera and talking about light catching the tops of the multistorey flats. They took my details I wonder if they googled me (as they won't have anything in their computer) would they find my photo at Featurepics regarding the police.

Though I asked FP to please when I got up to change the two other photos and they have done so  ;D

Just saw IRCrockett is their featured photographer at the moment.

And they have started using moneybookers

I still can't believe FT didn't send out a gift to the submitter of their 1,000,000 image. DT gave out a 1 GB memory card for their last landmark image.

Its just a pity it wasn't a nice photo I would be surprized if anybody bought it.

If you go to featurepics and do a blank search you will see a rather boring picture of a sign indicating a Police station as the first image.

Its been stuck there for most of the day, I have been wondrring why it has been the first image but apparently from an e-mail I just received its their 50,000 image and its mine  ;D.

So just goes to show some sites don't massage their landmark images apparently i get a wireless remote control which sounds pretty cool. I am curious if it wil actually arrive supposedly they have to send it from Germany.

Not my best photo but it does define my current micro stock uploads lots of signs all the good stuff from that day is going to Alamy.

DT vector illustrations Q + A Questions by me answers by adashi

Q1 how much does an eps sell for and what does the illustrator get? do we really get $2??
A1 An eps file is sold at double the price of the JPEG file (levels applied). That is $2 for Level 1 file.

Q2 what formats obviously eps but what versions of adobe illustrator etc?
A2 Prefferably the latest version of Adobe Illustrator

Q3 Does the rasterized jpeg version have to uploaded first and the additional format loaded once the jpeg has been submitted? or can they be ftped together (with same file name but different file extensions or as zip file).

Q4 If an illustration has been rejected previously as the JPEG had jagged edges can we resubmit the vector file?

A3 and A4. Only JPEG files can be uploaded via FTP. Once the JPEG file has been accepted, the EPS version can be uploaded also as additional format

Q5 If the illustrator does get $2 for an eps file can they just upload that version so that there will be no 50c or $1 JPEG sales that might undercut their sales elsewhere?
A5. JPG is still the primary format in which people preffer to download images. It is not the EPS that needs a JPG preview, it is the JPG that can have an EPS additional format.

« on: August 07, 2006, 09:11 »
For me the beginning of August has been better than the beginning of July at SS though today is really slow.

Though I think I wil start new threads at the DT forum more often 8 DLs today so far (which for me is very good) still $6 away from another payout so near and yet so far.

I'm always amused by how Google Adwords works by setting up this thread you have essentially answered your own question as these adverts appear for dubious sites.

Bonny Scotland for me.

Please check out my thread at DT regarding vector uploads
So I don't look like some sad fellow who everyone ignores.
By the looks of it you may get $2 for a eps DL ;D

General - Top Sites / Re: How many images
« on: August 07, 2006, 01:44 »
Well its Monday the start of a new week so how are those microstock companies doing?

1 Fotolia 1,048,546 {1,013,804} (977,382) inc 34,742
2 istock 970,255 {956,000} (940,763) increase 14,255
3 Shutterstock 940,323 {923,690} (906,228) increase 16,633

4 Dreamstime 530,000# {520,000*} (510,000) incr 10,000 #1st August *27th July
5 Big Stock Photo 438,000 {430,000} (424,000) increase 8,000

6 123 rf 300,000+
7 Can Stock Photo 244,776 {242,798} (240,520) increase 1,978

8 Stockxpert 170,000?

9 Stockphotomedia 69,765 {68,875} (67,325) increase 890
10 Featurepics 49,802 {47,253} (43,962) increase 2,549
11 Gimmestock 46,691 {46,260} (45,835) increase 431

So FT still double the number of new images of iStock + SS

488
Signed up with Gimmetsock no sales and very slow growth and poor payout so stopped.

I think now unless a site has something new to offer or has very agressive marketing they aren't going to make a dent in a rather saturated market. Curious if Lucky Oliver manage to make any headway.

FT was started by some French guys who had just sold a webhosting business, I see thier google adwords all the time and their 20c bounty helped swell their portfolio so they were the first to reach a million.

I know of a guy from another forum who is signed up with every agency and he has given some of them star ratings

Mehmet Dilsiz star rankings

He has little descriptions of each site though ignorance is bliss regarding USphoto he hasn't written anything bad in fact he gave them 3 stars.

Thanks Erdosain

Just uploaded my eps files to DT. Hopefully they will streamline the process next time I might try FTPing the jpeg and eps file at the same time.

« on: August 05, 2006, 02:50 »
Thats rather a personal question!

images at 123rf - 1,208 essentially 90% of the photos I have submitted since March (that were over 4mp)

Actually I will probably just miss out on a payment this month.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Why does Istock ignore FTP requests
« on: August 05, 2006, 02:46 »
I suppose with their current systems iStock can rigidly enforce their strict upload limits. If they introduced FTP they would be receiving terabytes of crap every day.

Of course with a bit of planning such as StockXpert, you could FTP quite a lot but only transfer a certain number of files to the iStock queue each day/week. But they still end up with servers full of photos.

Probably better to issue FTP accounts to members that have sols some photos under the understanding that if you break the upload limits you have to go bad to imagemanager.

Maybe iStock spent a hunk of change on imagemanger and want to get their money's worth out of it.

One thing is sure their categories suck.

123 have calculated their subscription sales and they increased again

March 22c
April 26c
May 27c
June 27c
July 28c ;D

If only they had the sales of SS.

I may finally qualify for a payout at the end of the month though not sure when I will actually get paid :'( hopefully no later than mid September.

both StockXpert + DT replied to say they had contacted the lazy keyworder. DT informed me he will sort it out when he back from his holidays in a month. I hope he makes more effort with his holiday snaps.

A correction to your figures I was comparing it to my table in my guide.

Bigstock 35% of credit sales

A typo on their part they mention 35% twice and in the last bit say 25% though 35% of $40 = $14

495
Hey what about the illustrators?

Couldn't find any instructions about uploading eps files, tried FTPing some eps files but they haven't reached unfinished files yet.

A lot of photographers at DT weren't happy about uploading RAW their digital negative.

Off Topic / Re: FTPing to many sites in one go
« on: August 03, 2006, 03:16 »
I FTPed over 300 meg between 6 different sites the other day with Fillezilla and it worked fine yes its free.
Though it may have been your connection not your software, even though I have broadband every week or so  I will experience downtime when I can't get a connection for an hour or so and I live in one of three towns in the UK with the lowest broadband usage.

The only probems I have had with Filezilla iis

1 won't send files to Featurepics - critical transfer error
2 problems with shutterstock at first
3 will remember bad connections (if you mistype during intial set up)

DT have links to the site and a guide to using it.

« on: August 02, 2006, 17:01 »
OK apoligies for stating the bleeding obvious

but just in case there are a few people who don't know about "queue" function on Filezilla.

You need to set up a list of micro stock sites login in names and passwords which you can access through quickconnect

Quickconnect your first site

drag your files to the bottom area of the screen (not the right area where they will be immediately uploaded)

Quickconect to your next site
drag your files to the bottom area of the screen

and so on
when you have connected to all your sites (FT,StockXpert,DT,SS,SPM,LO,FP)

right click on the first file in your queue at the bottom of the screen and select process queue and you can go to bed or whatever and FileZilla will do the rest.

Well I thought it was pretty cool, if only 123, CanStockPhoto, istock would join the FTP club.

Has anyone actually received a payment from these guys?

I have a few images on my own personal website linked to that image on Featurepics and other linked to StockXpert, i was thinkling of switching to FP as I can set the price get 70% and the buyer doesn't need to buy any credits.

I stand corrected

Every batch they have done the same thing give every photo in a batch gets the same keywords.

This might be OK for a series of photos of planes but X-rays of different parts of the body

I found them at DT as well with the same lazy keywords.

They are FT but I can't see the keywords, has anyone else noticed hidden keywords at least people can't copy!

I will send StockXpert an e-mail I notice his other photos aren't too bad with the keywords.

CJ go to StockXpert and do a search for "druids" you will see 38 photos

8 by this guy which have standing stones ;D

29 by this guy which don't from that upload >:(

1 by you of Stonehenge which if the photos are arranged newest first is the very last one. :'(
