Dreamstime.com / That whole Model release business ...
« on: October 23, 2007, 18:44 »
.. at Dreamstime is driving me insane.  Try as I may, they are never good enough.  Like I upload 4 pics of the same model, one gets approved, three rejected because of MR issues.   ???

I was at a point were I was going to delete all of them and then start fresh but, guess what, that isn't possible (the service guys told me something about possible misuse - how can I misuse my own portfolio??).  They'd have to do it and that just didn't sound like it was ever going to happen.  As always service is uniquely unhelpful.

Just venting ...

LuckyOliver.com / Re: Have your LO sales ground to a halt?
« on: October 11, 2007, 17:53 »
I have no dls - period.  Okay, tiny port but I decided to upload a small number, and see whether I get even the occassional sale before uploading more.  Nothing, nada, rien, nichts ...
I am not very enthusiastic about spending more time uploading - althought he guys there seem really nice.  Too bad.

got one yesterday.  The one that couldn't be "properly processed" had been in the queue since 9/24

I am on Panthermedia only with a small portfolio.  It's really amazing how much time it takes to translate everything into ones native tongue  ;)
I sell about a pic every two to three months but at Euro 14.95 or so this easily beats bigstock (no sales in like forever) and Luckyoliver (no sales ever).  As the dollar keeps depreciating against the Euro (and pretty much any other currency) it might be worth to spend more time on German sites - on of these days ...

12 days for me.  My first batch ever - pretty disheartening!  First impression: not so great.

Shutterstock.com / Re: Trying again...
« on: August 23, 2007, 12:10 »
I felt the same way about Shutterstock after my first rejection - but then I (barely) squeezed in the second time and I am loving it.  My rejection rate isn't outrageous, I have (small) batches where all pics get approved and I have build my second largest portfolio there (238 pics since May - not too shabby for a weekend photo warrior with currently no studio access).  You will learn pretty quickly what they accept and what they probably won't so you can custom-tailor your submissions.

So, I guess what I am saying is: once you are in life gets easier and what is more, what gets accepted sells with very few exceptions.  Since May I have made more money on SS than all the other microstocks I joined last year in July (still not rich  :-[)
So keep at it, it's worth the trouble, really.

Off Topic / Photo permit in India
« on: August 20, 2007, 23:12 »
Hi:  can somebody help me with this question:  I am planning a trip to India next year and read somewhere that a photo permit is required to photograph (especially with tripod).  Does anybody have any experience with that and knows the procedures (where, what, how long and how much!)

Thanks!

Cameras / Lenses / need new lense (ok, want new lense)
« on: August 18, 2007, 14:10 »
I am in the market for a new tele lense to replace my cheapo Sigma 70-300 mm for use with my new Rebel XTi.  I have been searching but can't make up my mind so I am asking you guys/gals for input.
Here is what I'd like to have: similar range (could be <70 mm and/or >300 mm though).  I'd like to have a macro setting and some type of image stabilization (I am really not an enthusiastic tripod user).  I don't want to get the cheapo models for around $200 bucks but I also can't spend $1000.  I was thinking somewhere in the middle.  I am agnostic as to the brand as long as it is a good lense.
I was looking at the new Tamron AF28-300mm F/3.5-6.3 XR Di VC.  Would be a nice (almost) all in one lense for my extended travels next year but I am a little reluctant as it is so new.  Anybody has any experience with that lense?

As always, thanks everybody for the input.

no dls in days.  I have a small portfolio but I used to sell slowly but steadily.  Now - nothing in days.  I am at 269 or so dls - am I bronze now or not?  Would that make a (tangible) difference to me?  At this rate I surely won't even think about exclusivity.

Off Topic / Re: Shares in Getty?
« on: July 17, 2007, 22:42 »
Here is another fancy term for you:  portfolio diversification.  Don't get too heavily invested in one company or field (e.g. don't buy all US hightech shares or European pharmaceuticals, etc.)  Your work and sources of income have to be considered as well, if you "invest" your time in making money in one field then you might be well advised to invest your money in another so if something goes wrong in hightech or photography or with the pharmas, hopefully the others will hold up somewhat and you are not loosing everything.

Of course, if you know a hell of a lot about the field you are working in (but are not an insider and therefore do not risk to be thrown into jail for trading on insider information) it might make sense to selective invest in that field as well.  Investing in funds is probably the best strategy but do not buy front loaded funds (you pay upfront for the priviledge to be able to spend your money).  Current wisdom seems to be to buy indexed funds - they are basically following the market in their performance and the truth is, few investment managers reliably outperform the market.

Off Topic / Re: Photography Course
« on: July 17, 2007, 19:03 »
I signed up for the NYIP course about 18 months ago and first was really excited about the whole idea and the prospect of being part of a learning community.

Having said that, it is falling short of expectations.
The materials are good and I learned a lot by going through the booklets BUT the whole course was developed for an internet-free world and that just doesn't work well anymore (at least for me).  Who really listens to tapes anymore?  I had to scramble to find a tape recorder somewhere in the garage.  In many instances the material seems a bit dated, the pictures clearly depict the style and fashion of decades gone by - which wouldn't be a problem if it was just some, but looking at the booklets I feel stuck in the 70s.  There is a heavy focus on film and a little booklet on digital which doesn't begin to scratch the surface.  Good photography can be had in film and digital but digital is what most people do these days and so a little less focus on developing color film and more on digital tools would be helpful.

The assignments are fun and the feedback very personal (you have your own adviser who sends you a tape with his/her comments).  I enjoy that part a lot but since there are no real deadlines I am always thinking: I'll do it tomorrow, next week - you get the idea (okay, my problem).

Leaves me with the learning community which isn't as active and interactive as I had hoped (haven't checked in a while, though).  the webpage feels very static, sort of first generation brochure webpage rather than fun, creative, interactive.  The best school I ever attended (not photography) was the best for many reasons, an important one being that I learned as much from my classmates as I learned from my professors - or at least very close.

I understand that this doesn't answer your question in a positive way but hopefully helps you somewhat with your decision making process.

iStockPhoto.com / Ratings? What, who, why, how?
« on: July 17, 2007, 01:38 »
I am wondering how the ratings/reviews at iStock come about.  I have 92 pics online (yeah, I know, not enough to be taken seriously but I am working on it) and 32  reviews/ratings and I thougth that was pretty cool but I noticed that there are people out there with portfolios of equal size or even smaller with way more reviews. Who rates what?  What roles do the ratings play in the search algorithms.

Thanks for your input.

I have tried to upload but so far haven't succeeded - can't find the pics that I uploaded anywhere, like there isn't a "Waiting for approval" link or anything.  Unless its so well hidden that I can't find it (which is possible, I am not the world's greatest searcher for tiny links).
Let's see how it goes.  I figured if Corbis get's into the game I can't ignore them.

I've not sold an image since the upgrade
that's exactly how I was doing until yesterday when I sold a couple.  Today, however, I sold TWO extended licenses - hurrah! Best day ever, anywhere on microstock.
Immediately ordered $1000 worth of new photo equipment - now I am $980 in the hole  ;D

not a single sale in days!  Frustrating!!
Is there anything one can do?  Who's portfolios get "found" - those with many pics, high approval ratings (mine ain't bad), uploaded during a blue moon?
I am thankful for suggestions.

iStockPhoto.com / New Categories
« on: June 19, 2007, 13:08 »
Nobody has mentioned it yet (I think) so I will:
The new category selection at Istock is sooooo much better than before!  Three categories from a predefined list compared to selecting a random number from a list that I believe contained more than 10,000 entries (I counted them once but forgot the exact number).
Going forward the upload limits will be the issue for me - not the hassle factor with uploading.  Now if disambig.. (can't even remember what it is called) could be made easier .....

Still, I am loving it.

Bigstock.com / Re: Anything happening?
« on: June 13, 2007, 10:57 »
Thanks for the input.  How many pics do you have there?
I am debating to try StockXpert where I am currently not selling but I can't hbnadle too many sites on top of work and family.  Any insights as to BigStock vs. StockXpert?

Thanks

Bigstock.com / Re: Anything happening?
« on: June 13, 2007, 00:10 »
My experience with BigStock has been very poor.  I don't have that many pictures online (85) but mainly pics that sell fairly well on other sites and after almost a year I am $1 short of my first payout.  That's $34 in 11 months - so I understand hayman12 and will probably do the same once I got that ellusive last Dollar.

I mean, really, what's my incentive for uploading there again?  I do microstock for the money, sure, but an extra $34?  Living in Silicon Valley $34 won't even buy a nice dinner for my husband and me.  So I do microstock also for the thrill of selling my pics. When I check my account (daily, at least) I want to see some progress, not stagnation.  I get nothing out of uploading at BigStock, not even fun.  So why bother?

Microstock News / Re: Lise and Kelly in the New York Times
« on: June 05, 2007, 16:55 »
I think for all of us it is good that the NYT covered the subject - free PR for our product.

I also find the article somewhat more balanced than a number of articles published last year in various photography magazines, there the "get rich quickly and effortlessly" aspect was much more pronounced.  Cynic that I am, I assume that they did that deliberately so people go and buy expensive cameras which certainly pleased their main ad buyers: camera makers.

When I started last year (after those fateful articles) I never imagined how hard I would have to work to make a few bucks.  I think this aspect is covered (somewhat) better in this article.

I only partially agree with the professional photographer.  I am sure he lost some sales to microstock but aren't the main buyers of our pictures people who would otherwise be priced out of the market.  And on the other side, don't companies who can afford it still buy exclusive pictures?  I talked to a advertising exec for a big company recently about this: he said they would never use microstock because they don't want "their" picture to show up on 23 other webpages and a bunch of flyers.

My 2 cents,

Tina

Adobe Stock / fotolia.com vs. fotolia.de
« on: May 31, 2007, 08:08 »
I have a question for you all.  I am sitting here in Germany eager to check my Fotolia account but am unable to do so.  Whenever I type in fotolia.com I get automatically redirected to fotolia.de and my password and username aren't accepted/known there.  I tried going through the link at the bottom of the page that says Fotolia US but the same happens.  I seem to be unable to open fotolia.com while here in Germany.
I tried fotolia Spain fro kicks and that worked.  Any suggestions how to deal with this?

Thanks,

Tina

I'll be off for about four weeks. Taking a trip to Austria, Italy and Germany and hopefully returning with stockworthy grandparents and grandchild pictures  ;) and some romantic Tuscan vineyards in evening light type shots.
Any last suggestions for the traveling-with-kid-also-trying-to-take-pictures photographer?

"See" you all in June,

Tina
