Shutterstock.com / Re: Are Shutterstock turning a blind eye to AI?
« on: November 06, 2024, 07:21 »
I've just browsed through lots of photos and videos that used AI in some shape or form, I knew AI was getting through the cracks but had no idea it was this bad.

So think it's confirmed, SS are officially unofficially accepting AI content, there's no denying it now.

Get ready for an official announcement or maybe a soft launch where they don't tell anyone, but quietly change their terms and conditions.

I don't know if there are any free tools but, as Shutterstock strip the metadata, then it's probably not going to allow us to check submitted content, but they are a tech company, and should certainly be able to spot any markers in uploaded files. There reviewers should also be able to spot the obvious here, so they either don't care or don't exist, and the checks are Ai?

The ones I added above are just the tip of the iceberg.

Yeah I've seen plenty of them including video.

Kind of makes you wonder what's coming next from SS, maybe another 'exciting news' email.

Yes, some blatant AI imagery in those ports.

I know SS have opened up the flood gates in their acceptance, but how on earth are the SS reviewers allowing them to pass?

I also mentioned this in another thread but if they are using our content for AI training, doesn't using AI images end up degrading the model? (unless companies like Nvidia have their own AI detection tools).

Also, are there any free online tools to check if an image was AI generated?

About the content you can already see that what is supplied is for very and I mean very low quality.

I've noticed this as well, another part of their strategy is to now accept anything by allowing they're quality threshold to be reduced. They also now allow too many similars, where a contributor uploads 20 slightly different versions of the same video - what's the point? They're only bloating the system.

Also, I can easily spot AI produced images and videos in the search results, so if I can see this how can't a SS reviewer? And if they're allowing AI images through the gate how does that work out when they're training or selling our media to other companies for AI training? Can you train AI to produce media from other AI media? Won't that reduce the quality of the model?

For video it's just awful and continues to decline.

I continue to upload some decent stuff, but revenue always stays within a certain bracket which I can never seem to break out of.

It's almost as if there's a throttle and when I get one decent sale the algorithm says 'right, that's all you're getting for the month' and the tap turns off.

I personally think someone's really f*ckn around with the search results and contributor exposure.

Very discouraging.

I wonder how long before they realize they've screwed up, people get fired, and then get back to basics again.

btw. Thanks Jo for always analyzing their quarterly performance and taking the time to break it all down for us.

Better than expected, and much better than Shutterstock (which isn't hard to achieve).

Pond5 / Re: POND5 BEST MONTH EVER
« on: October 09, 2024, 17:49 »
For me, it's not about a one off super BME. I personally prefer to see consistent month-on-month sales over the course of a year. The sales pattern should accurately reflect the amount, frequency and quality of clips which you upload.

If buyers aren't reacting to a contributors efforts to supply P5 with fresh and quality material then it means something's up at P5.

Wow, I'm surprised agencies still use this silly practice of getting you to 'prove' that your work is you're own.

I also remember back in the days of istock where we always had to print a screenshot of the apps and write a short description, it was always one of my pet peeves, together with their absurdly long review times, but after a while they canned it, so I'm really surprised they are still doing this from time to time.

However, I personally haven't been asked to supply any screenshots since they stopped making it a requirement and I only bothered to do back it in the day because I actually earned money from them.

btw syn, I'm surprised that P5 rejected one of your vids with the reason being that it included NASA elements such as for example earth textures or photos of nebula, as I believe it's all open source/copywrite free.

Pond5 / Re: So much for the new pricing model
« on: October 03, 2024, 10:30 »
Recently I've been uploading regularly to P5 but they are breaking new records in how often I don't even reach the payment threshold.

Back in the days I used to earn hundreds of dollars every month and now my last payment of only around $50 was way back in July.

P5 is just going down hill for me.

Has anyone seen an increase in their earnings this year from uploading new content to SS?

Yes, this summer I mainly uploaded new material. The new images have led to an increase in income. (The spike in June is due to a single $500 sale).

So there is some hope then, thanks for sharing.

Adobe Stock / Re: Adobe quarters and years
« on: September 13, 2024, 12:29 »
Far too many variables for each person experience in stock to be able to compare your sales to the next, for me Adobe sales are still best performer but are decreasing in 2024 and think it will get worse in 2025 onwards, Shutterstock almost matched Adobe for me this month. Still decent pocket money for 60mins hobby work every week, around $800/month.

Adobe also on the slow decline for me, I think the tide is beginning to turn for this agency (in terms of income for contributors) but I knew it would happen eventually. Although, I'm trying my best to give it one last shot and see if I can fight the tide, so I'll continue this year and early into 2025 with my best work. We'll see what happens but my instincts are shouting out "abandon ship!"

General - Stock Video / Re: $1,000 sales day on Pond5 yesterday!!!
« on: September 08, 2024, 18:58 »
Hmm. Nice.

For me - not sure what happened... Last year - was consistently doing well - so uploaded a set of about 1,000 new videos. Sales tanked by about 90% almost overnight to my utter shock, and for probably 6-7 months really didn't do that well. I asked the staff - and just got a stock reply basically saying 'hmm. oh well'. I was very sad.

Slowly it seems to be growing again. I hope I see the same kinds of results you have soon, because that is very nice.

Congratulations.

That's insane, by rights you should have at least seen a small increase, but to tank 90% overnight doesn't make sense.

When this is the outcome of such hard work it must be really demotivating.

Are you non-exclusive? If so, did you see an uptick in performance from other agencies?

Sorry to hear that, but unfortunately British Petroleum are a bit short of money.

A bit off-topic but I have to mention that recently their review have been great. Recently, they've been reviewing within a 1-2 days and sometime even same day, so credit where credit is due.

Still slow for me

Slightly up for me, I was expecting worse due the fact that traditionally July/August is the worst time of the year for sales.

Adobe Stock / Re: AI Generated video on Adobe Stock
« on: August 16, 2024, 12:04 »
Like other agencies they opened the flood gates, which contributes directly to a loss of earnings for serious contributors who take pride in their work.

72
With regards to Shutterstock, since the big changes which occurred in 2020, i've heard many contributors mention that SS seems to more heavily weight your ranking depending on your upload frequency. Can anyone confirm this from experience? Or did SS publicly announce to contributors?

Also, I think many may agree that their sales are far more erratic than what they used to be pre 2020, which would suggest to me that they jumble the search results on a regular basis.

73
I'm very happy there will no longer be $25/HD $27/4K videos out there.  Good job Pond5!!!

I'll be happy if they rebalance the pricing structure as well.

Does anyone know how stock agency search engines rank content?

Last year I took a brief vacation from the world of stock and tried uploading to YouTube which was interesting but didn't work out.

However, it did get me wondering about how stock agency search engines rank new uploads and if they work in a similar way to how the YouTube algorithm monitors 'signals'.

I know the YouTube algorithm is a complex beast that uses many factors to determine if your content is good, and then apply that data to decide whether or not rank or promote your content higher within the search results. But do stock agencies use a similar approach to ranking content every time a customer uses a specific search term?

July was awful for me (video), didn't even reach payout threshold and August is already shaping up to be just as bad or if not worse.
