General Stock Discussion / Re: Copyright question
« on: July 28, 2010, 18:39 »
I also submitted the star to IS, and it was rejected because of sharpening (I added some I admit). There was nothing about the copyright in the rejection reason. Also, I guess they would do something with images that are already uploaded and selling. If they are copyrighted, they would have to delete them anyway...I guess.

I'd think they would have deleted them but I've had pictures rejected for "possible" copyright infringement and have found some of the same subject still on there....so I don't think they do delete unless it is a sure copyright problem. We wouldn't probably have a problem if we got them on there early on.

I found those stars on all big agencies. Some of them have more than 1500 dl's. I doubt this would pass unnoticed by Istock for example..

Have you looked at the upload dates on those stars. They may have been uploaded when iStock wasn't to strict with their policies on copyright. Anymore it's hard to get anything through there without a ton of releases.

@ KB-
I'll take you're experience with Hp as a sign that maybe they've learned to clean up thier act. i had a really bad experience with one of their computers, and it put me off of HP. Dell went through a bad customer service period as well, and the only reason I don't have anything bad to say is that I've never gotten burned by them as I have with HP. To go back to my original post, it's my understanding that all of these displays come from one or two factories in Korea. That's just what I've been told. I switched to Dell from Apple, which sells overpriced monitors with a 1 year warranty and too bad about that dead pixel. Dell is 3 years and will replace a dead pixel monitor. So at this point I'm a dell fan. Next week, who knows?
Anyway, that's what makes horse races, and my opinion isn't any more informed than my own limited experience. Cheers!

I went back to order the Dell U2311 and it's not even shown on their website any more and after reading the computer forums people who had ordered them are still waiting and keep getting put off and put off. I guess they are having a real supply and demand issue.  I didn't want to give $539.00 for the Dell U2410, even though I would have loved to, but I didn't....so I ordered the HP ZR24W for $399.00. Wish me luck with HP....Hopefully it will be a good experience.

I think they will start to implement things in August. Not all things at the same time, but one by one.

thanks...any changes always make me nervous. I hope these are for the good and don't negatively impact us as contributors.

When exactly is this change suppose to take place? Need to know so I can start saving for the drop in sales... ;)

No seriously...I was wondering and I can't find it anywhere unless I missed it somehow.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Ansel Adams photos found
« on: July 28, 2010, 13:15 »
With the ignorance of many of the stock site reviewers at Istock, Crestock and Veer, those photos, if they were submitted, would probably be rejected for lighting (because they are in black and white) and composition. If it were possible for someone to go photograph these places with the exact same conditions and same composition, then submit them, it sure would be interesting to see what the results would be.

You'd think they'd keep the little guy in mind since there are a lot of them. Exclusives don't have it all and if their not careful they are gonna lose them the lttle guy. If I don't have a lot of sales on a site....I only upload when I have a little extra time. I really hope this isn't going to affect things to much.

Oh by the way FD....thanks for those links...got the new computer coming and I need them. ;)

Just go to be careful with noise if you lighten it to much.

Okay, I took a look, and it does look like a great monitor. I think what you are paying for is the extra connections and software enhancements. You would have to judge if you use them. My experience has been that the extra ports come in handy in a studio, but for image processing you mainly set up a workflow, and stay with it. In real life the difference between the resolution won't be that big a deal. The most valuable addition to photo editing in my opinion is to learn the keyboard shortcuts so you don't have to go to the menus and toolbars, and just have the image full screen.
I don't have anything good to say about HP, except for the low end printers- repeat- nothing. ( just my opinion based on some bad equipment years ago. When I get burned, you don't get a second chance.)
You can;t go wrong getting the best.

Thanks for the advice. I've never owned a HP. I did own a Dell many many years ago. It was a good computer and monitor. I guess I ought to stick with what I know. Your probably right about the extra resolution. I think I will get the U2311. I don't have a 24 inch monitor or 23 inch for that  matter so I probably wouldn't notice the difference between the two and the U2311 is $200 cheaper. Thanks again. ;)

I don't know anyone with these monitors, they are too new. In looking at the website, it seems that the 2311 has a wide viewing angle, which is a good thing. I have always been very careful to sit in the same position when judging color and exposure, because it does change a bit on the monitors that I've had ( flat panel anyway) depending on your point of view. This comes in most importantly when there is a client looking over your shoulder. In microstock you don't have that problem ( which is one of my favorite things about microstock).
I couldn't find the u2410f on the website- maybe its being replaced- in which case you may be able to get a great price on a closeout. I try to buy cameras and equipment when they are being replaced by something new, and last years "greatest thing ever" is this years "old hat".
I guess for me the bottom line is that you can't go wrong with either one, and they will take returns if you're not happy. They also guarantee no dead pixels ( unlike apple, which just says " ha ha too bad). ( apple is the new microsoft, with all it's evil and arrogance).

Here's the Dell U2410
http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/products/Displays/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=bsd&cs=04&sku=320-8277&~ck=bncat&~bk=gr:CategoryRec,g:NextStep,rk:
I still think I'm leaning more towards the U2410 since it is a 1920x1200 16:10 ratio rather than the U2311 that is a 1920x1080 with 16:9 ratio. I've also been looking at a HP monitor that compares with the U2410. I just wish there was somewhere I could go to view them side by side rather than rely on the internet.

Maybe you need to use some legal terminology about copyright infringement and the court system. Sound like a lawyer and then he might remove it. ;)

I got this one...it's the first picture. That's my daughter in law and granddaughter.

I think a lot of these contests like National Geographic use the contest to get pictures rather them buy them in order to sell their magazine. No matter what the prize amount is...it's still cheaper getting these pictures for free and have unlimited rights to them, than purchasing an image for one time use. It's a marketing strategy on their part.

791
Mainly what draws me to the 2410 is that it can be set to Adobe RGB. The 2311 only has the sRGB. I don't really know rather that would make a big difference or not.
And of course the $319 price draws me to the 2311...lol

HI Donding-
I've been using dell monitors for years. Great quality and warranty. I use them for my regular business as a still life photographer with some pretty demanding clients. Never a problem with translating the look on my monitor to the prepress house.
I was told ( by someone who seems to know about this stuff) that the dell monitors are the same actual monitor as the apple monitors. Except the dell  monitors are 3 year warranty, with more ports and speakers.
As for which one, I've got 4 of them now, and i can't see much difference between the bare bones monitor and the high end monitor. ( except for the extra ports, and a slightly bigger size.
One thing I can say is look for sales- dell routinely has sales where they knock 25% off the price.
 I hope this helps

Do you know any one who has the U2410 or the new U2311? The 2410 is on sale from $599.00 to $539.00, but the 2311 is sitting at $319.00. There are a few coupon places I went through trying to get it 20% off, but it always says error, even on the Dell site. I've got my new computer coming next week and I need a monitor as well. :-\

793
I can't decide what monitor to get. I've read a lot of good reviews about the Dell 24in U2410 as well as the Dell 23in U2311. Both are ISP monitors and the u2410 is about $200.00 more than the U2311 and the U2311 is fairly new so don't know rather to trust the good reviews it's getting.

Any one have any experience with either of these or have other suggestions?

(edit) that's suppose to be U2410 not U2420 so I changed it. ;)

794
I'd say there's a difference between beatings some yokels at the county fair, and an infinite amount of rights grabbing scam 'contests' online.

You gotta read the fine print real close. A lot of times you a signing your rights away.

General Macrostock / Re: Micro vs Macro criteria
« on: July 22, 2010, 12:25 »
My knee jerk answer is...

Creative: RM

Typical: Micro

I agree...the buyer will more than likely go to the macro for those creative shots since many times they can't be found in the micro world, but the typical everyday image can be found easily in micro so why would they buy it from macro for more money when they can get it for much less at the micro's.

Hi Race Photo,
are you still open? :)
I'm going to open an account (need to transfer some files for a friend) and I'm not sure which link to use.
Is yours still available? Have you reached your quota?
I'm going to wait for your answer and do it later.
Thank you!

one would never think you're a black diamond at is by the amount of complaining you do. ;)

AP, you know me too well!

Thanks so much for all the kind words.  Glad I haven't alienated too many here :)

Guess we will have to add a fish dinner to those drinks tonight - maybe a "fried" fish, LOL!  ;D

Hopefully not fried in BP oil!

Man that image is terrible. It looks like a snap shot and would never make it on the micros. I wonder why they chose it. It's probably some guys girlfriend and they broke up and she's mad because she only got $1.00 to pose so now she's screaming forgery.
