Adobe Stock / Fotolia's Fast Reviews Bye bye?
« on: May 14, 2006, 09:50 »
Is it just me or has Fotolia's once pretty legendary reviewing system suddenly gone byebye?

I have submitted quite a few photos about a week ago and nothing yet.  :(

Shutterstock.com / Re: Slow sales?
« on: May 09, 2006, 12:15 »
In a weird turn of events...after having my images (2) on shutterstock (and being rejected) I have had one download in 3 days...so in terms of being rejected yet getting a download, its pretty fast for me

ahahha...i hate irony  8) ;D

Well its good to hear you guys are doing well, because I'm gonna rack up a tonne of images and then i'm gonna bombard them in three months  :o

Good luck and hopefully it keeps up strong

Computer Hardware / Re: Backing up your photos
« on: May 09, 2006, 11:51 »
As a side business, I run a small company that deals in computer parts and such.  I have found that external harddrives are very popular and very reliable - and cheap as well.  I think the prices have dropped dramatically - I haven't placed much emphasis on this business as I'm in school and working full-time at the University I'm studying at (in the summer I work), so I don't have updated prices...but the last I saw a harddrive here was $90 CDN for 160 GB (I believe thats internal).  Thats a LOT of picture taking and you could theoretically get an external for not much more.  It all depends on what you are aiming for.

As for DVDs I've heard this and I'm geting curious.  Whats the lifespan then, of a DVD?

Dreamstime.com / First Dreamstime sale
« on: May 09, 2006, 10:22 »
Hey everyone,

I just wanted to let you know that I made a sale on Dreamstime today.  It was for $0.50 which is alright I guess - is that because they used the old credits?

Anywho, I'm really excited since I only have 9 pics up and from what you guys are saying, that is pretty good :)

Hopefully I can bring some more downloads

Have a good one

Slowdown because of the large number of sites popping up?  Or just because there's a lot of photographers popping up?

Or just a general slowdown for unknown reasons?

I think it wouldn't be wise for me to convert right now to exclusive because I haven't seen how well I sell yet mainly because I have few photos.

So I'm guessing you are right...and I haven't reached any level, not to mention a particular level

True, I guess

So you would recommend from your experiences that other sites will increase income more than the amount made from exclusivity from one?  I have about 40 images right now, 35 of which have been accepted to Fotolia, 10 of which are on Dreamstime (I have background removal issues) and such and one copyright problem (although it was accepted at other places).

I have about 20 images needing to be processed.  I have 512 MB of RAM coming to me this week or so which will increase my post-processing speed and hopefully I can get up to 200 images on most sites within a good time period.

Hopefully I can see steady downloads because I really want to generate some income to buy more lenses and a bigger card/pay for the camera.

Any other recommendations?  Anyone see a pickup in any previously slower sites?

I understand but Leaf, you are doing very well from the sounds of it and the extra amount wouldn't be worth it for you right now.  For me, having made a grand total of $0.50 on Bigstock in a month, it looks a bit more attractive (and the Shutterstock rejection) because I would like to make some money to pay for some new equipment and make some money to pay back the equipment I already have.

And what type of photos do sell really well?

Yup

I got a reply.  They are really anal about everything.  I don't understand why they are this way, especially if they are the market leader.  They said that you can't touch your photos after you submit your ten, but it doesn't say that anywhere that I've seen.  So it seems to me that they make up their rules as they go along.  Now I have to wait.

Although I really hope I can get more into Dreamstime (I'm going at about 40% acceptance right now because I'm just submitting everything to see how they react to my stuff, so thats alright).  I think I might want to be exclusive, I'll have to wait and see.

How well is Dreamstime doing for you CJPHoto?

Its too bad though.

Its the fact that they think they are superior I guess.  Hopefully another agency comes along and knocks them on their a$$....but I just hope that those photographers that make money from them don't suffer as a result....

I think I might try exclusiveness at Dreamstime.  They pay 20 cents for a photo if you are exclusive.  Thats decent income to pay for my new stuff

I was just rejected from Shutterstock after I pulled my images from there.  Someone really has a problem over there.  I thought you have to submit 10 images before they look at you?  What the %^$?  I mean, I'm trying to do them a favour and save them time and I get the shaft.  I would understand if I had submitted my images and they were bad, but I was taking them off ... and they don't even listen to that

787
Apparently its cool to reject me at Shuttestock based on 4 or 5 images.  I emailed them and asked them to reverse the decision so that I can upload 10 pictures and be judged like everyone else, but it is probably to no avail.  Hopefully they aren't anal about this considering I removed my pictures so that I can put better ones on.

2 of them did make it on, but I don't want to wait 3 months for that.  Thats pretty ridiculous especially since I didn't even have my 10 up yet.

788
One last thing...how do you select around a blurry part of an object if there is a blurry part?  Just wondering

789
Thanks I will try that :)

I might need some more guidance..hopefully I'm not dense and I can do it  ;D

790
One other thing...how do these referrals work for these sites?

791
Sounds like a good plan then.

Anyone have any good tips on how to remove backgrounds..advanced though, on Photoshop CS2

792
Just wondering what the correlation is between the two.  Is Dreamstime more picky or Shutterstock?  I just had some files accepted and some rejected at Dreamstime, so I want to use that as a basis for my Shutterstock submittances - I just removed some of the rejected photos just in case...but I was wondering if there's a strong correlation between the two?

I only have 5 files now online at Shutterstock waiting, so I'm going to assume that they won't look at them until there's 10 (I removed 5 to make sure I am not going to be rejected - precautions)

Thanks

793
Yes I am using a Digital Rebel XT.  I try to keep the ISO at 100, its native ISO.

Isn't it the case with most, as in 80% of cameras available (or more) that they are noise prone at night or in blue sky situations?

Well I just got a pic accepted but ironically, they don't send you emails to tell you.

Poo

Oh well, its a good thing tho, I'm happy it got accepted.

795
I NoiseNinja everything.  You think thats good enough?

Since I have a small image base, I don't mind the IPTC thing just becaseu I don't have a lot of pictures.  I submitted one picture and hopefully it works out.  I'm not the greatest photographer in the world, so we'll see what happens.  I'll let you guys know.  As well, the picture I just submitted there was accepted at Dreamstime and its part of my 10 to shutterstock.  So, hopefully it appeals :)

797
Just submitted my ten to Shutterstock.  I hope they get by.  I'd just like to thank everyone who's helped me along so far, especially leaf and striker77s.  Thanks a lot for giving me advice on this stuff.

I really hope I'm not rejected from them too, because I'm already feeling a bit dejected from the StockXpert rejection.

I really enjoy this kind of stuff, but it seems that maybe I'm entering too late or something.  I don't want to sound pitiful so I'm going to stop and hopefully Shutterstock will make me smile :)

Thanks again to all those who offered their advice so far.  I really appreciate it.

I have about 40 photos up and I get a lot of views - One has 15 or so and its been up for a week only...which for me is pretty good - but no downloads.  Does this seem to be the same for anyone else?

799
As well, is their approval based on technical aspects of the reviewer's preference of what they want to accept?  I hate getting the response we're not looking for these photos at this time - its a real pain because StockXpert did that to me but they only give you so many options and I have so many photos I can't put in.  Its a lose-lose if you guess wrong.  Being new at this, I have lost many times so far.

800
Does anyone know how long it will take for Shutterstock to approve my photos if I submit my 10 pictures this week?

Very scared.  Don't want to get rejected.
