nonetheless, I also think it must be a problem for istock.  Rating fights, cliques giving only 5's to ALL each others images, ...

not sure what the solution would be though.

Drop the whole ratings thing...

General Stock Discussion / Re: No sales today

Thursday was bad for me on SS.  I thought that it might have just been me since it is usually one of the best days of the week (if not THE best day of the week).  I wonder what happened yesterday?

General Stock Discussion / Re: New Image Format
« on: January 26, 2007, 13:48 »
I don't think that it will ever make much of a dent.

First, because it doesn't really offer much that JPG doesn't already have.

But ultimately, because it isn't free.  MS wants licensing fees.  That won't fly with most other companies, no matter how small, since they can use JPG for free.

Wow, this group is really spread out.

My first Digital Kamera was an Ultrazoom too, the Olympus 720UZ.

That was the exact model I had as well.  Small world...

Off Topic / Re: Web Site or Blog???
« on: January 26, 2007, 10:36 »
It depends on what you plan on using it for.

If you are trying to create a site where you can sell your photos or market your business, then a web site is more appropriate.

If you are trying to write a journal and make it public, then a blog is more appropriate.

The double antishake is sensor movement combined with ISO-boost.

What is ISO-boost?  Sounds like an energy drink...  ;D

What is dual stabilisation?

Why do they persist with xD cards.  Everyone knows they are inferior to SD.

My guess is that Dual Image Stabilization is two levels of image stabilization: one on the lens and one on the sensor.  But I could be wrong (and have been many times before).

I would agree that it was a mistake for Olympus to move to the xD format, but every company always wants to create proprietary "standards" that they own so that they can make lots of money.

FYI: An Olympus Ultrazoom was my first digital camera.  I loved it.  It was a great point-and-shoot camera.  I took it everywhere.  It was one of the main reasons that I bought a digital SLR (to replace my film SLR) in the first place.

One thing I don't understand: we're having a lightbox of mixed subjects?

No, not really.  The subject is "neglected images".

maybe it is automatically adjusted depending on how many images are in the cue.

Probably manually adjusted...

I guess it could have been one of the many lighthouses found in rural Kansas that's not used for shipping navigation.

Thanks for the good laugh...

How many images can an artist submit?

916
iStockPhoto.com / Re: The neglected images
« on: January 25, 2007, 07:46 »
I think the image should have been online for an amount of time.

This is where it gets a little tricky.

For an image to be truly "neglected", I would agree that it should be online a while.

But the Best Match sort algorithm places newer images at the front.

So if your image is neglected and you wait too long, no amount of 5s might be able to resurrect it.

Anyhow, what is your suggestion for the amount of time?

1.   Ranking. If you rank somebodys photo - be honest. Rank only a few images, not entire portfolio. I will be happy (maybe happy its not a good word  ;D) even if you rank MY photograph 0/5 if you really think its a crap. If we want to have real results we need real data.

As far as iStock rankings are concerned, here are the current findings from multiple sources:

- The more 5s the better.  They help in bringing your photo to the top of the Best Match (default) sort order.  The first batch of images that show up in the Best Match sort order will have ALL 5 ratings.

- But there are other variables involved as well, such as whether you are Exclusive (exclusives show up first), how many downloads the image has had, and how long the image has been online (higher downloads combined with an image being online a short time show up first).

- A non-5 rating will send an image pretty far down the Best Match order and basically kill any sales potential.  The first images that show up on the Best Match are ones with all 5 ratings.  So if you have ANY non-5 ratings, then you will not appear in the first batch of images at all.  So I would suggest refraining from rating an image lower than 5.

My suggestions:

- If you don't like the image, then don't rate it.  It will only hurt the image and can lead to retaliation and bad relations between members.

- If you have a suggestion that would help make an image better, then send a message (PM) to the artist.

Off Topic / Re: Paypal Personal vs Paypal Business
« on: January 25, 2007, 06:51 »
According to Kiya if you have a premier or business account

no fees on receiving money from SS iS FT DT
but fees from StockXpert + CanStockPhoto

anyone know about 123, FP, BigStock?

I have no idea how PayPal works.  I have read conflicting statements from various people on whether they charge fees or not.  I was very cautious about getting a payment thru PayPal, so I decided to try one site at a time.

Here are my results:

- I have a Premier account

- I have had payments from iStockphoto, Shutterstock, Dreamstime, Fotolia, and Stockxpert

- None of the payments had PayPal fees (or any other fees)

So my results show that the Premier account does not take fees.

FYI...

It seems that there are some issues (aka bugs) with this new product that are being reported on the various forums.

There is someone at Microsoft that works on the team that created the product that would probably be glad to help track down and fix any problems that you find.

Here is his info:

Mike Tedesco ([email protected])
Technical Evangelist - Pro Photo Community
Microsoft Corporation

Well that doesn't surprise me.  The forums and blogs are usually the first to report things most of the time.  I just wish that would increase my sales a little...  ;)

On Paxxion the mail of PayPal account where you receive your payments is the same of registration. You can modify it, but it's the same one.

I would highly suggest adding another email address.  My main email and paypal email are different and I wouldn't want to use the same one for a variety of reasons.

Edit: Here is my sales for last year, can you guess which month I had a free photo of the week?

I would say that is not conclusive, since November is the best month for most submitters (because of the holiday season rush).  My best month was also November and I never had a free image at any of the sites.
