NOt top 5.
Have a look at the threads at the end of each month which show what percentage of sales people get from each site.

uploaderz - well put. If something is selling, it is selling, if it isn't, it isn't.
The only beneift I can see is knowing how active a site is but sales are really the only thing that matters.

1. Dont think so. 2. Dont think so.
are views worthwhile?

I find they are easy with acceptances but then I find similar with DT (SS doens't seem to like me though).
They creep along for me. they have just started per picture sales as well which bring in more money. Given the ease of uploading, defiantely worthwhile using.
I also think they will get better as that have a good backer. They have 300,000 photos so they are already big enough to we worthwhile designers looking at them.

What server problems?
How long did it take them to catch the renegade reviewer, from the sounds of things not to long.
Not trying to defend them but all companies have their issues.

That is a hard one. Maybe find someone who wants to be a models so they get photos in return for your model release?
Not really sure. At this stage I am pursuing a completely release not needed strategy.

I agree with what you say but a ameteur with a pro setup who has earned that amount is getting pretty close to being a pro.
Alamy is a weird one. I looked at a guys photos there and some of them were very average - looked like he had put on his christmas day photos. With no review of quality there, it is no wonder designers are turning to microstock for stock photos. The expensive sites will end up being the domain of the "exclusive shots" where special releases are need (ie celebrities etc)

Much like digital cameras, the microstocks were playing the numbers game - more pictures the better. Now they are focusing a bit more on quality (see threads on rejections). Soon, maybe once they believe they have enough pictures, they will start weeding out the lower quality ones but I dont think the time has come for them to give up the numbers game (ie. bigger is better much like MP - would you buy a 6MP camera now that 8 or 10 is the standard).
I believe that in a year or two you will need a pro set up.
First the amateur killed the pro by submitting on microstock. Soon the pro will kill the amateur by submitting on microstock.

Is anyone actibely uploading to them or is everyone waiting for sales??

I just think they are focussing on only part of the market - sure they download more but they pay less. Why not offer both?

Pixvue also looks pretty good
Pixvue is good (i use it) but sorts words into alphabetical order (and removes duplicates) I thought only Fotolia looks at the words at the top. What are the others.

After seeing 123rf per picture sales ( I already have a few after a few days) and seeing on the shutterstocks forum that someone complaining that they had 3000DL and no per pictures and someone replied that was normal.
Are they missing out by not offering per picture sales as part of the site (or more obvious). They way I see it they are only catering to designers who use a lot of photos. If a designer only uses a few photos, they will use one of the other sites.
I think they need give a per picture sale into the site and to offer credit packages (ie 10 credit packages). Until then, I think they are holding themselves back.

Just to let you know the per pictures sales are as follows:
S - 1 credit M - 2 credits L - 3 credits
So you get 50% of the payment (or whatever % you are on - between 30 and 50%). HOwever, customers pay between 80c and $1 for each credit depending how they buy, so your income is as follows (based on 50% payout):
S - between 40 and 50c M - between 80c and $1 L - between $1.2 and $1.5
[Note: if you joined before the end of april?? you get 50% payout. otherwise you start at 30% payout and as you DL increase you go to 40% and then 50%]

admart01 - if you are keywording by cut and paste, have a search on this forum for a keywording thread.
There are programs avaliable that make it alot easier. I use pixvue which is free on the internet.

What jpeg compression do you use. I use 12 on photshop and get pictures of about 4-8mb depending on the image.
I have now heard some people only use 10 so there images are only 1-2mb.
Am i doing overkill??
Does using more compresson (ie lower number) result in less noise since it must flatten the image??

Plus, you would need to pay for them at their largest size.
I am sure they would give you a copy for a nominal fee. I am pretty sure I have seen someone ask before due to their drive failing. However, the % of my photos actually submitted is a lot less than I take. I have a lot of personal, non stock orientated photos that are personal momentos from my travels and these while worthless, are more valuable to me than the ones I put on Microstock. I really do need to sort out a better backup system.

Lucky you re the single sales - i didn't know about that but then I haven't received any either. How many sales was this and can you tell what images they were???
Agree that last month, their payout was actually 26c as opposed to their minimum 22c. THis is only calculated at the end of each month.

Has anyone thought about network drives (external). I beleive you just hook them up to a router and then you could use that to sync. It could be in another location in the house which gives some protection against theift and depending on the size of the fire/flood/etc, some protection here too (especially if you have an unattached garage or building toyour property.

The biggest risk with longterm storage with external harddrives is that a new connector other than USB2 will be used, meaning you wont be able to plug it in.
Image if you found a 5 1/4 inch floppy disk. how . would you access it. Even 3 1/2 inch drives aren't standard on computers anymore. How long will disk players be back compatible with CD's, and once blu-ray comes out, DVD's (dont blu-ray come surrounded in a catridge to protect the disk?)

I liked the old one, though it did need a column for CD sales (not that i have had any).
I think photo and film could be on different pages.

Shutterstock slowed down last month and hasn't really picked up. I am lucky to get more than 1 or 2 DL a day (with about 50 photos - I am working on this).

I am seeing the old credits dry up a bit now.
Congratulations on the sale.
