Computer Hardware / Re: Backing up your photos
« on: May 09, 2006, 05:13 »
If you want to do that, I think you can get shells that are external that you can slip internal drives into.  That way it would be easier to swap rather than having to open up your case.

I dont think DVD are reliable for a long term solution either

What is a lacie drive??

Ideally one should be stored off site but that is difficult as it makes it an inconvience to back up to.

I am currently working out what I will do but it will be a combination of laptop, external harddrive and DVD.  As some stage, multiply external drives and when I final return to NZ (my "home" even though I am working in London) I will keep a external at my parents as well.

So they just make money from teh frame.

Interesting.

Admart001 - let us know if you get any sales and on what type of photo.  it will be intersting to see what sells.

General Stock Discussion / Re: This is BULL
« on: May 08, 2006, 05:36 »
My "this is bull story" with SS is taht I refered someone.  They apparently used my link but for some reason he isn't up on my referal list.

I sent an email to SS to say, can you please add member number XXXXX.  He hadn't even been approved yet.

They say, it can only be done at time of submission, not at any other time.

I have written back to complain as it is clear that I referred him and that is the whole idea of the referal system.

(his cookies cant be working as the same happened at Fotolia but I am still waiting their reply - they approve photos a lot quicker than they answer emails ;) )

It does seem harsh that they review your application before you even submit it.

Oh well, you are on DT which is better for me anyway

I have more acceptances on dreamtime. In general if it got rejected on dreamtime, then it will get rejected on shutterstock however there are a few exceptions as I think dreamtime rejected a few as having too many "nice scenry shots".

Not sure if that helps but I thihnk you have done the safe thing and only submit shots have haven't been rejected elsewhere. Better to be same with the first lot then dump on them once you are approved.

If you submit to istockphoto they are picker in my opinion and give reason for rejections which whould let youi know if shutterstock will accept.

Still, at least it means I won't spend an hour reading the meaningless drivel in the forums over there. :-).

The forums were still working apparently. Some people must have it bookmarked.

934
Very weird.  If it was schduled, they would have a page up saying that wouldn't they?

935
only because the referral link would go to the site that is down ...

The good news as Chellyar points out is that the front end designe site is not down so it shouldn't effect sales.

936
Shutter stock is.  Just go into istock though so it is back up.

StockXpert.com / Re: 50 day upload limit
« on: May 03, 2006, 05:25 »
I never realised StockXpert had an upload llimit. I must have just gone under the radar as I upload about 100 photos over 2 days.

They do have a new designer referal system and apparently they are looking into a photographer referal system ->StockXpert

I think this is worring for the individual microstocker but nothing we can do about it.

I think because of this type of activity we will see upload restrictions imposed and approval ratings linked to these.  this will stop bulk uploading, especially with no review of the indivdual image.  It might alos be the end of ftp upload to make it harder for bulk upload.  However, thinking about it, the microstock agency doesn't care, as long as they get good photos so maybe nothing will change except a tighter control on acceptance ratios.

The important thing is to ensure you do not sign up to an account where the compnay pays you a flat fee and then has the right to do with that image as they please - I think one was mentioned on here before.  ie. you sell your photo to them for say $5 and then they go and put it onto every microstock agency.

Hopefully I manage to get a payout from my sites before sales get swamped and it is no long worth my while.

939
If it gets into Istock, it should get into shutterstock.  i thinkn it is a good idea to send in best sellers.

Good luck.

19% shutterstock
25% dreamtime
11% fotolia
10% istockphoto
6% bigstockphoto
8% 123RF
11% StockXpert
1% Canstock
9% Featurepics

shutterstock was a disappointment but I didn't upload much to them this month. fotoliais picking up as is istockphoto. 123RF and StockXpert and new this month and seem to be good additions due to lack of effort needed to upload. I am ready to give up on Canstock but then got a DL (my only one to date) on the last day of the month.

dreamtime is definately my best though and once all the old credits get used up, it should get even better.  Wonder what this month has in store.  My plan is to get a lot more shots uploaded ,especially to shutterstock as I am still only halfway to my first payout.

Adobe Stock / Re: Fotolia keywording
« on: May 02, 2006, 04:09 »
I thing when ordering its hits, it looks at the first 7 words.  Ie so if you sort be relevance, having the word in the top 7 will help you out.

943
If this is for you first submission, I wouldn't put in a series of photos (ie with the same subject).  You wouldn't want to be rejected for having similar shots as opposed to technical merit.

In that case, if you wanted to jump the cue and you know you would be submitting a batch in the next couple of days, submit one photo to hold your place and if it isn't reviewed before you submit the rest, you have successfully cue jumped!

Bigstock.com / Re: Bigstock is soooooo slow
« on: May 02, 2006, 03:09 »
My reject ratio has definately gone up with the latest batch.  I might see if they sell well at other sites and if so, sneak them back in amounst other submissions to do a "consistancy" test on them.

Has anyone else notice that when you submit one lot of photos on (say) Monday, and a second lot on (say) Tuesday, they all get reviewed at the same time despite the fact they were submited 24 hours apart.

This seems weird as they aren't doing it in a ture first in first out basis.

Alamy.com / Re: Who's on Alamy

Are alamy strict on approvals?  Do you submit there first and if reject submit to the micros or do you take different types of pictures for each?

General Stock Discussion / Re: What do you use for keywording
« on: April 28, 2006, 02:54 »
I use Pixvue.  Right click in windows explorer and then enter IPTC data.  YOu can also select a few photos at a time so when you save one, it automatically opens the next (unfortunately it doesn't populate with the same info).

I also keep track of all titles and keywords in excel.

949
I think it has always been there, just like the per picture sales on shutterstock.

Dreamstime.com / Re: Dreamstime down??
« on: April 27, 2006, 06:29 »
Have submitted the files now so the site seems to be working properly.  Just have to wait my 134 hours!!!! to see if they get approved.  At least they give an indication which I think is helpful.
