The only way SS would increase commissions is if its in their business interest to do so. Very few folks left when they cut commissions. As far as theyre concerned, lower commissions doesnt hurt their business.

Adobe Stock / Weird 1099 Email
« on: April 23, 2022, 15:05 »
A couple weeks ago, I received an official looking email from Adobe, saying my 1099 was incorrect and I needed to go to a website to download an updated one. The URL was... less than official looking, so I emailed Adobe directly. The responded to say it was a real email.

Although the site URL still made me uncomfortable, I visited and put in my info. Apparently I made $30 less than they originally thought.

That's what I want to do, go through refiling my taxes over $30 in less income. I think I'll pass! Hopefully the IRS doesn't mind keeping more than they had originally planned...

If youve already got a good quality camera, try it out and see how it goes, but I dont know that Id spend the money to buy one new. The autofocus in my DSLR is dying and Im not sure it makes sense to spend the money to get a new one. But I definitely appreciate the passive income from what Ive already taken.

I see the problem as it always has been and will be. Mat makes a good point, less drama and adulteration leaves the buyers more options. But here's the other side. Some buyers want ready to use images. Some don't know how to make their own adjustments. Some want fast and good, so they can spend time on something else, like designs and layouts.

I agree. I work with someone who uses stock images, but barely ever touches Photoshop. Not everyone has the interest, even though it surprises me. Photoshop is so much fun to mess around in!

Bigstock.com / Why Big Stock?

Why does Shutterstock keep Big Stock around? Theyve owned it for years; I would have expected them to merge the sites ages ago, but they havent.

Does everyone elses 1099s still say Fotolia, or is that just me? No complaints, just amusing.

How long will the code be available in the portal? Can I wait to redeem the code until my current plan expires?
Thank you very much!

I didnt redeem my 2020 code until a month ago. The blue bar had actually disappeared by that point and I had to reach out to Adobe support, but they were very quick about getting me a new link with no trouble.

Port disabled. I'm no large contributor, and had originally planned to give it the month of June to make a decision as my individual days vary considerably, but the comments from all of the big accounts here and on FB about the impact helped me make a decision sooner.

Print on Demand Forum / Re: Keywording in Fine Art America?
« on: June 15, 2020, 00:05 »
I figured out the problem -- the word "of". When I keyword files of landmarks that include words like of/and/the in their names -- "University of PigsInSpace", I always leave those words out since Microstock sites generally limit you to 50 keywords and darn if I'm going to waste one on a conjunction, but it turns out FAA has an uber particular search engine.

The files that were showing up fine for me in searches don't have conjunctions in their names -- "PigsInSpace State University". The ones I couldn't find have of/and/the in their names -- "University of PigsInSpace". When I was using the search, I was typing the full name. Sue is right that FAA only bases search results on keywords, not titles. When I dropped "of" from my search, the files popped right up. That is SUPER particular, but at least now I know!

Thanks Sue. I added a couple of my longer titles as multi-word keywords and those files are now showing up in the results. It's a little annoying, and I have no idea why some files were showing up fine without doing this, but it seems to have resolved the issue.

I've been adding images to Fine Art America, but can't figure out their keywording. Some of my images show up in searches, but others do not appear even if I type the full multi-word titles.

I was going to reach out to them, but wanted to check here first to see if I'm missing a box somewhere or if my keywords need to be formatted differently in FAA vs stock sites. Am I missing something?

Dreamstime.com / Re: Question about royalties

Most sales on DT aren't the percentage sales that involve levels that go up based on increasing numbers of sales, most are subscriptions and the contributor price is a fixed $0.35. I do get occasional $2.00 sales and every once in a while something more, but most of their buyers use the subscription plan.

DT did increased their commissions 10% starting today; I haven't had a sale yet, so my numbers are slightly out of date.

You can opt out of SR-EL sales. It's a box you check/uncheck when you submit files.

How long did Dollar Photo Club last? Its unfortunately/fortunately before my time, so Ive only heard about it anecdotally here.

If this was about encouraging ongoing contributors, theyd just be changing the existing tiers to reset each January, but theyre also separately lowering commissions. Less than a year after Adobe raised commissions for most folks, Shutterstock is severely cutting them. Theyve got to be really struggling to slash in this way.

Newbie Discussion / Re: New to stock, made my first sale

Roger shoot what your think is interesting . If you find your subject interesting most likely others will too and buy it. The boot picture below I have sold over 3000 times. You just don't know what will sell.  Good luck.. Stock is Fun...W.Scott McGill

Cowboy boot breaking a glass jar? I'm completely intrigued. What kind of uses do you find the photo in? On its face it seems like it would be very niche! Nice!

Apparently SS does not accept graffiti as editorial for whatever reason and requires a property release on it for commercial, even though that doesn't totally make sense either since graffiti is mostly done illegally.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Taxes 2020
« on: March 08, 2020, 00:03 »
When filling out US taxes, how do you all handle the Payer Taxpayer Identification Number field for companies that don't send you a 1099?

Normally, in these cases, I can find the TIN in investment prospectuses, but Dreamstime isn't publicly traded.

The software I'm using for my taxes is insistent that they must have a TIN, and my effort to fill the field with a bunch of zeros was rejected.

Thanks for the good read. My December was disappointing. First time since 2016 I didnt make payout on Shutterstock. My port is fairly small, about ~500 (primarily landscapes and architecture) and a typical SS month is $50-100, but its still disappointing. There are definitely far fewer Single sales than there used to be.

On the plus side, AS continues to improve. Now, if only I could crack the nut of videos  folks want to buy. Shooting video of the things I shoot stills of does not seem to be working.

Mat - I've had the auto keyword tool automatically replace titles and keywords on images. It happens on my phone and tablet. It does not occur on my desktop.

121
Unless something has changed with Adobe, you cant add/remove keywords after an image has been posted.

122
Not taking things down unless youre the copyright holder requesting it doesnt make sense. I understand their concern about people making mistakes, but dont they also have a responsibility to the customer? If I want to purchase a photo and there are two identical photos on two different accounts, which one am I supposed to buy?

My top seller on SS.

https://www.shutterstock.com/image-photo/amazon-black-piranha-teeth-1104578060

Taken with a Sony Mavica CD-300 in 2002.  Just sells and sells and sells.  Go figure.  ???

Woah, nice! Although I am a little disappointed its from a post floppy-disk Mavica, which would further enhance the story.

I can't get over how he'd admit in public that he didn't read the T&C.

However, if it's true that this sort of use at that price is legal SS 'premiere' clients, SS is even worse than I've always thought.

NB, often contracts are deliberately fuzzy and couched in legalistic terms which mean they are much more open to interpretation on the company's side than we could ever imagine (and not a mm on our side). Also there can often be information hidden on other places on a site.

Let's be honest here: who knew that you could get as little via SS on a merchandise deal like this?

NB: Nude Beach? New Brunswick? Not Binary? Naked Brunette? Numb Bum? New Basket? Nice Bucket? Never Blind? Natural Breasts?

mm: military maneuvers? masked marauder? munchkin massacre? midnight meal? made man? mystery meat?

Your short forms are hard to follow.

Sorry to non English speakers.
NB = Nota bene = note well
Mm = millimetre

I have only lived in English speaking places he have also wondered about N.B. before, but never thought to pull out my phone and look it up in the past. Thanks!

One relevant item - Adobe/Fotolia heavily weights your first seven keywords compared to the rest of them. I don't know how significant the difference is in sales, but I make sure what I think are the most important keywords are among the first seven.
