I activated the Symbiostock theme in WP and now I have nothing but a white screen for a website! what?? I can't even get into my dashboard to activate another them because nothing shows up! I removed the Symbiostock folder from my themes folder hoping it would revert to a default WP theme but it made no difference. I still have that white screen. How do I fix this?

I only ever had that when I tried editing a php file and mucked it up.  First time I deleted Wordpress from my cPanel then reinstalled it, second time I had two windows open so could get in that way.   Never heard of simply installing Symbiostock causing this problem maybe the upload got corrupted.

Things I would try (I do trial and error, not technical.
Shut down browser and reopen and hope it works
Go to cPanel and if brand new installation of WP delete and reinstall
If existing version with previous data (early versions of Symbiostock needed a clean version of Wordpress, do not know if that is still the case) then go to cPanel or somewhere on the hosting side of the website and do a backup, hopefully they provide one

I was hoping to get around it without having to do a re-install. I don't want to try again if the problem is going to keep happening. I'm using the latest version of WP and it's a clean version as far as I know.

who is your host (that might help the more technically minded people) and where is your site, will see if I can see anything obvious which might help  before they turn up ?

I had the same problem when fiddling with php files and a back up restore fixed it. But a normal install and not touch php shouldnt cause a white screen. But if you google white screen wordpress you will find a lot of hits talking about it.

I had this happen here is what Leo had me do

1. You log into your cpanel or FTP and delete the theme folder. Replace it with the last theme that worked for you.

You then need to disable all plugins and reinstall the newest version of the theme.
Then one by one activate the plugins.

This worked for me and I have not had any problems since

Your install of WP is probably ok. As already mentioned, activate the Twenty Eleven theme, which will automatically deactivate the SY theme. Then delete the SY theme. Then reinstall.

Once you get the white screen on everything, to fix it without a reinstall you need to get into the database. Most hosting setups have phpMyAdmin for this.

1. Fire up phpMyAdmin and select your database

2. Browse the wp_options table and find the option_name 'template' and 'stylesheet' rows which will have values symbiostock or symbiostock-child

3. Edit these both to twentytwelve

4. You should now be able to get back into your site. Delete and reinstall the symbiostock theme.

This is a popular pastime when tweaking Wordpress themes...

I did that... deleted the symbiostock themes folder. the other themes are still in the themes folder so do I still need to replace them? Also I do I disable plugins and reinstall the theme when I can't get to my dashboard?

My guess would be that the problem is your host.  A free hosting service with only 10Gb of space and 100 Gb of bandwidth is not going to get you very far.

Try using one of the recommended hosts

Ok, I did find them eventually and did as you suggested and it worked!! Yay! Thank you! You're a life saver  :)
Any idea why the problem occurred though? Could it be a server issue?

I have same problem on my local testing host. I've tried all advice from this thread and nothing worked.
I am not going to re-install my WP or the theme again and again as it is of no use.
What I have noticed is that when I'm trying to see the theme with 'Live Preview' it is going to /wp-admin/customize.php?theme=symbiostock link with the same white screen as a result.
I have also defined WP memory limit to 128M and still with no change.
In debug mode I'm getting this message:
Fatal error: Call-time pass-by-reference has been removed in /var/www/mysite/wp-content/themes/symbiostock/inc/classes/network-manager/network-manager.php on line 1645

Sorry for my English  :-[
Thus I have done: go to the C-Panel and rename the Plugin folder in Plugin-Temp. Then provide a new Plugin folder. The white screen is away and you can log in.
Now move the plugins of the "-temp" folder one after the other in the empty, new Plugin folder and kontroll whether all OK is. It takes 5 min ::) Delate the "-temp" folder.

If you have tried this, i apologize. You might try toggling the theme off and on again a second time...i think i remember reading this as a solution.

It's a bit hard to tell what could be happening without knowing much about your local testing setup, a little Googling looks like that error may have to do with the PHP version being used.  Can you check that for us?

Also, just curious did you activate the network?  I'm not certain if that would cause errors on a local environment depending on the set up.  I took a look at the line it's referencing and I don't see an obvious cause for the error but I'll send AJT a note to double check since it looks like it's in his network search function.

I am on newest LAMP server at Ubuntu 13.04
WordPress Version:      3.5.2
PHP Version:            5.4.9-4ubuntu2.1
MySQL Version:          5.5.31-0ubuntu0.13.04.1
Web Server:             Apache/2.2.22 (Ubuntu)
and as it is on my home computer, which is connected to internet through the local cable provider, I have no network activated.
I have tried deleting and installing theme a few timed and it still pointing to network-manager.php as causing problem.

Yes, that '&' is my fault and it will be fixed. It should not be there (I've put & in function call instead of header). But I think that it has nothing common with blank screen. This & is reported as a bug in debug mode (as it was) or sometimes as a warning only in rare php versions, but maybe...

I've sent you PM with link to theme with & bug fixed.
Try it and let me know if it works.

I don't know environment that you are using, but try to switch off debug mode and set option somewhere (maybe select older php version?), to make php more tolerant to minor issues in code, to get rid of all those notices.  Symbiostock needs some fixes in reported places, but it is not urgent, all is working under typical server configurations.

Dmg I had the same problem, blank screen. I solved downgrading php; follow what ajt said.
To be clear, all seems fine just deactivated php 5.4.10 and activated php 5.2.17.
Maybe this solves the issue also to you..

I have the same problem.
My host is ipower with wordpress 3.1.4 and PHP 4.4.9

After installing Symbiostock theme, I clicked on Activate and get a white screen with a "0" in the upper left corner.

I reinstalled wordpress, deleted Symbiostock themes, installed theme Twenty-ten, that allowed me to get back into the dashboard, but as soon as I install Symbiostock theme and Activate it, I get the white screen with "0" again.

Second question: I bought the CleanTheme 2.0. Do I still have to install the Symbiostock Default Child Theme?

I was thinking the latest version of wordpress was maybe 3.5.2 or so. Not sure if that s a factor. And if you install the Clean Theme you do not need the default theme.

Yes, the current version of WordPress is 3.5.2.  Version 3.1.4 is ancient.  It is two years old.  See here for details:

http://codex.wordpress.org/WordPress_Versions/

In addition, the current version of PHP is 5.4.16.  Version 4.4.9 is about five years old!  See here for details:

http://php.net/releases/index.php

I would definitely say that your issue has something to do with the versions of the software that your host is using.

That version (3.1.4) was provided by my host (latest version they have, downloaded just last night).
I couldn't update it to the latest 3.5.2 version due to old version of PHP used by this host. Thanks for letting me know how old is it.
I wonder why they still use such an old PHP version and if many other hosting companies are still using such old software.

Also, I just received a message from Symbiostock about successful deployment, so I guess I'm in.

I am having the same issue, a white screen when activating the theme. This happens on my localhost but also at my online WP install.

I have installed a fresh WP 3.6 and are running PHP Version 5.4.9-4ubuntu2.2

Weird messages, maybe tihs time different reason, but
first: switch somewhere that "strict standards" to less strict :)
second: try to decrease php version to 5.3.x.

I don't think downgrading PHP will help much as my online WP install uses PHP 5.3.2-1ubuntu4.20 and has the same error. I do use WP 3.6 on both servers.

I changed the error reporting in my php.ini to: error_reporting = E_ALL & ~E_STRICT
This didn't help me, still get the same error  :(

Edit:
Downgraded WP to 3.5.2 but that didn't help either.

I changed line 1645 in wp-content/themes/symbiostock/inc/classes/network-manager/network-manager.php from

ajt_network_search_all( & $query_list, $this );
to this:
ajt_network_search_all( $query_list, $this );

Have no idea if this is good to do, I suppose it isn't ok  :)

And it works now, but... changing define('WP_DEBUG', false); to 'true' gives me massive errors on screen. See attachment.
Using WP 3.5.2 and are going to upgrade to 3.6.

Should have read this thread more carefully. Found this by reading the errors and google.

But switching 'WP_DEBUG', true still gives me lot's of errors. Don't know if this is a problem for the functionality, lot's of nav menu warnings:
nav_walker_mobile.php on line 61

I'll just switch off DEBUG  :)

They aren't errors.  They are notices.

I signed up with Bluehost a few hours ago.  Followed the tutorial and as soon as I click activate for the symbio theme, I get the white screen and can't access wp-admin.  Found the theme in my file manager and deleted it.  Same thing happened when I reinstalled and clicked activate.

I've deleted and reinstalled again but just tried live preview this time and that just gives me the blank page.  Any ideas?

Go to Bluehost cpanel and find option for setting php version. If there is 5.4.x, set 5.3.x and try again :)

Thanks.  I think it will take me a while to get the site up but thought I might as well make a start.  Been a while since I worked on a website and I seem to of forgotten everything.  The guide has been quite good to follow but I think it needs to be dumbed down a lot for me.

Had a call from a bluehost rep and he had heard of istock but was surprised that they only paid 17%.  He asked if that worked out at $10 to $20 and I told him it was much lower than that, as low as 12 cents.  He said they would be interested in helping out with the marketing and SEO, so I'll send him an email with a link to this forum.

Setting the PHP version from 5.4 back to 5.3 did the trick for most people.

I am not sure if I can do that on Bluehost. If I have my own computer as server yes I can downgrade my php.

No solutions for me. I have tried with all the php versions and I have disabled all the plugins. Nothing. I continue to get the white screen. Are we sure that the zip file is ok? Can I get some assistance?

Of course you can do it. Go in CPannel -> Software/Services -> Php config

Nobody here? I have tried all the alternatives, seems that the symbiostock zip not working and the Bluehost assistance cannot help me, they say is the Symbiostock developer which has to help me....

Patience, grasshopper, patience.  Between your first post and this one it has barely been an hour.

What version of WordPress are you using?  If 3.6, then I would try and uninstall 3.6 and install 3.5.2 (which you can find here: http://wordpress.org/download/release-archive/)

Then make sure that you are using the latest version of php 5.3.

Is there anyway to download an earlier version of the template? Just curious since nearly 100 sites are up and running with this template and the older version may works.

I agree let's wait for a little longer to see the resolutions. At the same time, I will keep trying and will update once the issue is solved.

Off topic slightly but all this downgrading php.ini prompted me to see which version I have (4.* no idea which)

The choices of 5.2 are

Option 1   PHP 5.2
All files with the extension .php will be handled by the PHP 5.2 engine.
Legacy PHP with security updates. Compatible with most environments.
Option 2   PHP 5.2 (Single php.ini)
Same as PHP 5.2, but all subdirectories will use ~/public_html/php.ini
Option 3 PHP 5.2 (FastCGI)
All files with the extension .php will be handled by PHP 5.2 FastCGI processes.
FastCGI for PHP makes all your PHP applications run through mod_fastcgi instead of mod_suphp. This eliminates the overhead of loading the PHP interpreter on every hit. Since it is always in memory ready for the next hit, the responses will be generated faster.

If I was going to upgrade (would there be any benefits) and should I choose option 1, 2 or 3 ?

For those using Bluehost your options are probably just the same

Shazam that one wasn't my first topic  ;) it was another one in the page two. I am on Bluehost and I cannot install a previous version of Wordpress from my Wordpress webbuilder. At least from how much I can see. If there is a way, please tell me. Last version of Php is not 5.3 I have 5.4 too, but is not working with none.

Many of us are using Wordpress 3.6 without problems with Symbiostock 2.5.6 - it seems to be the php.ini 5.4 that is causing the white screen problems so they have rolled back to php.ini 5.3 from CPannel -> Software/Services -> Php config

Hey!!! That works!!!!

I ereased the previous worldpress folder, downgrade PHP to 5.3. Then, a fresh installation of WP and upload/install the template. Never see white screen. Will try the customization see if any issues further...

Thanks guys for your info and help.

For me is not working. I deleted Wordpress, I set PHP to 5.3 and reinstalled Wordpress. When I activate the Symbiostock theme I continue to have white screen. And Bluehost says is developer issue. In fact the error I get in Errors Log IS: PHP Fatal error: Call-time pass-by-reference has been removed in /home1/luxurys8/public_html/stockphotos/wp-content/themes/symbiostock/inc/classes/network-manager/network-manager.php on line 1645

Be sure to select 'PHP 5.3' instead of 'PHP 5.3 (Single php.ini)'... Not sure if that will cause problem. The zip pack should be fine at least on my account.

Is not this the problem! Is not working with PHP 5.3 sINGLE NEITHER WITH php 5.3 normal, neither with 5.2, neither with 5.4!

Did Leo tell you what he did to fix it?  It's the middle of the night for Leo right now so you may need to wait awhile for him to respond. Someone else may be able to help if they knew what he did.

Did you do anything else after Leo got it working (install plugins, update plugins, etc)?

I know it's too late now... but anytime someone plans on updating a plugin or theme or anything else, they should always take a backup.  This way if something breaks, they can "roll back".  The good news is that your site is kind of still in "beta".  So problems at this point don't affect sales or customers getting annoyed and never returning.

Nope, he doesn't tell me how to fixed it, he saw an error in the erorrs log. Now I removed again Symbiostock and I will try to upload it again.

:) In fact, I'd like to know how to fix it by myself, I cannot think that each time I update it I get blank screen and I have to disturb Leo again.
