Both GIF and the peanut butter are pronounced "Jif."

Why didn't I think of this Subject before? :)

I never pronounced that way. It would start with a j if it were supposed to sound like jif. 😀

Both "JIF" and "GIF" (g sound as in graphics) are correct. I would use the latter.

Correction https://www.theverge.com/tldr/2020/2/25/21147389/jif-peanut-butter-giphy-settle-gif-pronunciation-debate they are not the same. But the creator of GIF says they are. Now I don't know.

I always figured that as it stands for Graphic Interface Format it was a hard G from Graphic.

It seems that the GIF originator and Jif peanut butter people, don't actually agree. I'd have to read the correction and the story again. Oh wait, yes they do. Sure is confusing.

" in the eyes of the creator of the GIF, Steve Wilhite. He declared in 2013 that the acronym GIF should be pronounced Jif."

To be honest I've pronounced them both the same, and I don't eat peanut butter, so no bias.  ;)

For sure, microstockgroup.com isn't a perfect place to share my equestrian hobby, but I have to start somewhere, so I thought that this category will be ok.

If you take photos of equestrian subjects and upload to stock, you are in the right place?  ;D

I've always said "Jif" however I was recently educated on the fact that GIF is an acronym for Graphics Interchange Format.

Unless we are pronouncing "Graphics" wrong and it's supposed to be "Jraphics" I think the intent for GIF is a hard G.

Now I'm craving peanut butter.

There is general rule for this, (note how you just said jeneral not "G"eneral.

Usually, a c or g sound is hard or soft depending on the vowel that follows it. Here's the general rule: When c or g meets a, o, or u, its sound is hard. When c or g meets e, i, or y, its sound is soft.

Well at least it's not name calling or arguing about reviews and sales?  ;D

Actually the way I read it, the guy who designed the graphic interchange and the peanut butter people, actually agree? It's the same.

Anyone want to apply the rules to Gigabyte? Jig a bite I saw Back to the Future, who can doubt Doc Brown?

By the way, I've pronounced GIFs with the hard G myself.

Steve Wilhite created the Graphics Interchange Format: "It's pronounced JIF, not GIF." From the man himself? Who's going to tell him that he's wrong?

Interesting in the early days I would hear people say Jigabyte. These rules have many exceptions but help explain why you hear Jif

Gerrymander is another interesting one, as the original politician it was named for had a hard G - but most people say "jerrymander".

Gerrymander is another interesting one, as the original politician it was named for had a hard G - but most people say "jerrymander".

Now I learned two new things today: "The origin of the term gerrymander dates back to the early 1800s in Massachusetts. The word is a combination of the words Gerry, for the state's governor, Elbridge Gerry, and salamander, as a particular electoral district was jokingly said to be shaped like a lizard."

Thanks

Yes, it is pronounced "j"iff, although some people like to be different and say "g"iff with a soft g.

& haha, I thought "everyone" knew gif meant graphics interchange format, I probably learned that about 25 years ago when gifs started first becoming popular in Netscape - and the fact you could animate an image was "magic".

Or Twain compliant is another good one: Technology with an interesting name. No kidding, someone created that protocol and has a sense of humor.

(or liked Samuel Clements? Or thought that something that linked between TWO devices or Twain, would have a cute name?)

What does this mean, when does it end? Pride month and another letter added. LGBTQIA I get the first 4 but then things start to get lost. Is Q for questionable, I for I don't know.

Jif and Gif are the same because the person who named it says so. The End  8)

I had to look this up:  lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer (or questioning), intersex, and asexual (or allies)

By the way the lesbians I know (majority not 100% of them) call them self Dykes and the Gay men I know say they are Queers.

I think the Q in the alphabet soup was originally to represent Questionable or Questioning? Why would Gay be there twice? But being none of the above and not politically correct or in tune, what would I know?

I thought as a tag to irrelevant off topic I'd add that Avocados are now considered unsustainable:
"The increasing demand for this tasty fruit in America is not sustainable. As a result of the demand from the US for avocados, farmers in Mexico are influenced to increase the size of their farms, which is now leading to environmental issues including deforestation and increased greenhouse gas emissions." Ah yes, another cause of global warming = Avocados.

I hope the woke millennials get a grasp on this, so I can get mine again for salads without the inflated prices.  ;)
