I never pronounced that way. It would start with a j if it were supposed to sound like jif. 😀

Both "JIF" and "GIF" (g sound as in graphics) are correct. I would use the latter.

I always figured that as it stands for Graphic Interface Format it was a hard G from Graphic.

To be honest I've pronounced them both the same, and I don't eat peanut butter, so no bias.

I've always said "Jif" however I was recently educated on the fact that GIF is an acronym for Graphics Interchange Format.

Unless we are pronouncing "Graphics" wrong and it's supposed to be "Jraphics" I think the intent for GIF is a hard G.

Now I'm craving peanut butter.

There is general rule for this, (note how you just said jeneral not "G"eneral.

Usually, a c or g sound is hard or soft depending on the vowel that follows it. Here's the general rule: When c or g meets a, o, or u, its sound is hard. When c or g meets e, i, or y, its sound is soft.

Interesting in the early days I would hear people say Jigabyte. These rules have many exceptions but help explain why you hear Jif

& haha, I thought "everyone" knew gif meant graphics interchange format, I probably learned that about 25 years ago when gifs started first becoming popular in Netscape - and the fact you could animate an image was "magic".

I had to look this up:  lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer (or questioning), intersex, and asexual (or allies)

By the way the lesbians I know (majority not 100% of them) call them self Dykes and the Gay men I know say they are Queers.

I think the Q in the alphabet soup was originally to represent Questionable or Questioning? Why would Gay be there twice? But being none of the above and not politically correct or in tune, what would I know?
