I've got to admit this knocked the wind out of me, even though I was mentally prepared for this day since the announcement I still get a nauseating feeling every time I think about it partly because they have always been a fair commission stock media site for nearly a decade.
And over the years they have steadily grown their business, expanded, entered new markets, released new product lines (images, AE templates etc), continually updated their website and all this while maintaining a 50% commission, so what gives? New blood in the ranks looking for world domination?
Not sure if I will compensate by raising prices which obviously needs no mention that P5 has already thought that one though and expects to gain (except our customers of course).
All the aboard the race to the bottom train, next stop 35%.

Such a disappointment, this year I was planning to increase my prices slightly but now even If i did I would still receive less commission after this cut.
When they implement decisions like these it's highly likely that this was on the cards for a long time and that there were probably elements within the P5 management structure championing for the cut to be 35%, similarly others with a more conservative approach wanting 45%
And so naturally the end number was to go with 40% and monitor contributor reaction like a hawk right from the get go, and you can bet your bottom dollar that right now they are listening because they haven't made such a drastic change to contributor policy in over a decade.
So guys and girls, now's the time or it's all down hill from here.

Are there any traditional stock agencies that pay in cryptocurrency? I'd be happier to experiment receiving some earnings in a small cap cryptocurrency than deal with paypal.

Ignore it, it's just their marketing department trying to justify it's existence, by creating these useless surveys which they then cherry pick the results in order to show to upper management so that they can create an action plan on how to slightly improve something which has no effect on contributors.
Thing is they know exactly what contributors want which is why these surveys are just a total waste of time.

I know everyone has beef with istock and I do too and for good reason however I'll be honest and say that it's actually a bit difficult, terminating my account there feels like breaking up with a girlfriend in a long term relationship that's been going sour for quite some time, you know you should break it off but you have so much history together something is stopping you from doing it when you should have left a long time ago.
In terms of pure earnings videoblocks can at least match istock? are the sales constant or do they vary month on month? I ask this again as I was reading an old thread here about videoblocks and there were quite a few mixed opinions.
If in the future things were to improve over at istock can you reapply after previously terminating an account? if so how long is the cool off period?

Purely for video, I was wondering if anyone knows which is the best earner between istock and videoblocks as I am currently a long term non-exclusive video contributor at istock and my earnings aren't actually that bad but if I could equal what I earn there at videoblocks I would gladly terminate my account at istock.

Sitting in front of the computer screen looking at 4k means a lot more detail than HD, but sitting in the couch looking at a TV a few meters away makes it hard for people to actually notice a great benefit of 4k.
I've always thought this as well which makes me still question if it's really worth it. For instance I remember back in day the difference between DVD and Full HD was like night and day personally, and on say a 42 inch TV I currently struggle to see the same wow factor from Full HD to 4K although TV manufacturers marketing departments would have you believe otherwise. I asked my Dad if he would buy a 4K TV and he wasn't interested and I don't think most average households are that excited about ditching their current TV just to buy a 4K one. So that basically sums up the end user market trend, so I then tried to think of other markets such as blu-ray or the conference events industry and those aren't huge either. Are there other markets? I'm guessing that everyone will eventually have a 4K capable TV when their current one stops working but how long will that be? I've sold some 4K videos. HD is still sold more often, but that will undoubtedly change gradually over the years.
That's encouraging, will you keep on creating animations or footage in 4K?

Hi, has anyone had more than one Ultra HD animation or footage sold yet? I could be wrong but it appears that after years of it being a 'standard' its mainstream adoption seems to be rather slow.
Up until now I've personally held off at creating projects @ 3840 x 2160 but am thinking about giving it a try just to test the water.
Or is the market waiting for 10K?

Just trying to work out if it's my connection or their servers which has a problem. I guess this applies only to their FTP server and not http image uploads.

I am considering requesting my account to be terminated or have my videos deactivated and just keep my account there. The only thing that is stopping me is that I heard I think in this forum that they are planning big things for video sometime this year, can anyone confirm this or have any details? I would just like to know if this is true though I doubt I would be a game changer unless they seriously overhauled the royalty scheme.

I wouldn't hold your breath.
Why terminate your account? Why not just leave what you have there and not upload any more. I'm a diamond level footage contributor and I just dropped iStock video exclusivity after being exclusive for 9 years. I'm going to leave my footage on iStock, but I'm not planning on uploading any more. If iStock does make some changes that are good for the contributors, then I might start uploading again.
Hi Forrest, I too am a long time contributor and stopped uploading about 2 years ago after the last set of contributor unfriendly changes as a 1st step to see how things would pan out at istock, and it looks like things are continuing down the path. If they are indeed going to make it difficult to remove videos then I may consider pulling the port altogether but keep my account there as my port is small and 15% isnt cutting it anymore. The difference in royalty really becomes evident once you are non-exclusive for a long time, although in your case with a large port an dmuch invested effort over th eyears I can see why you have decided to stop uploading for the time being. I was wondering if there was any clarity on the pricing at dissolve. Now that I've lost an agency (Revostock) I was hoping to fill the gap with another but I am still confused about the pricing at Dissolve as I've done a quick search and can see clips for sale at $49 and $79.
Who exactly is pricing these clips, is it the contributor or do the staff evaluate the clip and price it accordingly?
Also, has anyone seen any increase in sales this year at Dissolve?

Avoid Dissolve like a plague. Just try VideoBlocks and you probably will be happy.
I would say that if you are on vb then avoid dissolve. You are simply competing against yourself for lower royalties. Way lower royalties. Thats why i closed my account. If you are not on vb and are on higher paying agencies or pricing your content higher on p5 then you "might" consider them if 30% is okay with you.
Thanks for your input. Yes 30% does sound low especially if it is of $49. I'm not with VB either and was seriously considering it, but there's something that says $49 per video and 100% royalties doesn't seem right. $49 because it seems a bit low considering the market and I don't like to encourage this price point to customers especially if your content is high quality. Although $49 is OK for smaller agencies that don't represent any threat or dominance to the market. And 100% contributor royalties seems too high, I know that sounds crazy where a contributor questions a 100% royalty but I would actually feel better if the royalties were something like 80% for contributor and 20% for agency even if it was just to cover admin costs, keep servers running etc. I like to think of when joining an agency both parties mutually benefit in some way in terms of royalties, but that's just me. Now If I could price my clips at say $59 and keep 80% VB would become my new favorite agency  btw. I'm not questioning any other contributors reasons for joining a particular agency as we all have our different lives and circumstances. But I'm just not completely sold on VB which then leaves Dissolve to fill the gap, and I originally asked about Dissolve because the lowest my clips sell for $60 on P5 which I feel is reasonable for the quality and length. That's a shame, I was owed around $120 but was holding out hope that he might find an investor. Revo sales were always very sporadic for me, it's as if it never really took off but i did sell from time to time. I did have a glimmer of hope that he might find an investor as i knew that he had nearly 10 years worth of portfolio and a lot of Microstock companies starting out would love to be an a position to have such a port on their site, which makes me wonder even more how he couldn't make it in the end.
Good luck to the people who are owed much larger amounts, hope it gets sorted in the end.

Congrats! In all the years I've been a contributor I must say that it's great to see a 100% commission paid out. Is this business model sustainable for both VB and the contributor in the long run? I've no idea but it was still good to see

Hi All,
It was just announced that HD videos are now worth 5 downloads rather than 1 in consideration of rank at Fotolia.
I've been talking to a lot of customers and it's obvious to me that high quality stock video content is very much in demand. There is a lot of opportunity to earn some serious money with video content. This change will help video contributors jump up in rank much faster and increase earnings.

They look different from the average stock footage agency, kind of a stocksy approach but for video. I like it and i think there's a market for it, i may try them out in the future.

the microstock model is failing because due to oversupply it can't keep the promise of selling cheap but in high volumes, now it's only selling cheap and on top of this the fees are the lowest in the industry.
we finally reached the last stage of the microstock Ponzi scam, we and many other "trads" tried to warn you years ago but nobody would listen, actually they would even ban my comments in some micro blogs, hahaha, where are they now ? probably no longer in the industry i guess.
I think video still has a way to go before oversupply, still many niches to fill and trends are always changing. Especially as bandwidth becomes more widespread across the globe, i can see video being used in all sorts of ways and in all sorts of devices.

I thought it would be a couple of months before i saw these low royalty sales coming through but yeah it's already beginning to kick in. I'm getting royalties of $8.74 for full HD files which i was previously getting around $24.00. If they wanted to undercut their competitors they could of at least have given us a fair royalty rate or at the very least put it back to 20% or 22% to make drop not quite so harsh.
It's hurting hard. I actually feel quite desperate and not sure what to do, I've been a video contributor with istock for such a long time and this is really pushing it too far. And what if the other sites follow suit? Very worrying overall.
